to the world....

http://health.yahoo.net/experts/eatthis ... soda-facts

America has a drinking problem. No, not booze. I'm talking about soft drinks. According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation, the average American guzzles 44.7 gallons of the sweet stuff every year. Not sure what 44.7 gallons looks like? It's about what you'd need to fill a small kiddie pool.

But the truth is, you don't need me to tell you that soda isn't healthy. We all know that America’s drink of choice contributes to our country's ever-expanding obesity problem. But, as Rodale.com writer Leah Zerbe discovered, love handles are just the beginning. Read on for her report on three shocking soda facts that will have you saying “Just water, pleaseâ€￾ from now on.

And for more instant secrets that will keep you healthy and fit all year long, follow me right here on Twitter or sign up for our FREE Eat This, Not That! daily newsletter to lose weight without ever dieting again.

Shocking Soda Fact #1: Soda fattens up your organsA recent Danish study revealed that drinking non-diet soda leads to dramatic increases in dangerous hard-to-detect fats. Researchers asked participants to drink either regular soda, milk containing the same amount of calories as regular soda, diet cola, or water every day for six months. The results? Total fat mass remained the same across all beverage-consuming groups, but regular-soda drinkers experienced dramatic increases in harmful hidden fats, including liver fat and skeletal fat. The regular-soda group also experienced an 11 percent increase in cholesterol compared to the other groups! And don’t think switching to diet varieties will save you from harm: Artificial sweeteners and food dyes have been linked to brain cell damage and hyperactivity, and research has shown that people who drink diet soda have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

Read out about the 7 biggest food label lies.

FIX IT WITH FOOD: The average American drinks 450 calories a day. By switching to water as your go-to beverage, you'll make room in your diet for these 40 Foods with Superpowers—foods that, even in moderation, can strengthen your heart, fortify your bones, and boost your metabolism so you can lose weight more quickly.

Shocking Soda Fact #2: Soda contains flame retardantsSome popular soda brands, including Mountain Dew, use brominated vegetable oil—a toxic flame retardant—to keep the artificial flavoring from separating from the rest of the liquid. This hazardous ingredient—sometimes listed as BVO on soda and sports drinks—can cause bromide poisoning symptoms like skin lesions and memory loss, as well as nerve disorders. If that’s not a good enough reason not to “Do the Dew,â€￾ I don’t know what is. (We reveal more insidious ingredients hiding onsupermarket shelves in the 15 Scariest Food Additives).

Are you addicted to diet soda? Find out now!

DRINK DISASTERS: Soda isn’t the only dubious drink you have to watch out for. Many bottled beverages pack enough sugar and calories to foil your get-fit plans in one fell sip. Protect yourself by avoiding the 11 Worst Beverages in the Supermarket!

Shocking Soda Fact #3: Drinking soda makes you a lab rat Many American soda brands are sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, a heart-harming man-made compound derived mainly from genetically engineered corn. The problem? Genetically engineered ingredients have only been in our food chain since the 1990s, and we don't know their long-term health impacts because the corporations that developed the crops never had to test them for long-term safety. Case in point: Some recent findings suggest that genetically engineered crops are linked to digestive tract damage, accelerated aging, and even infertility!

Soda wouldn't so bad if it didn't contain HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) and instead had real sugar in it. You can really taste the difference between a Coke produced for the U.S., and coke produced internationally!

That would still have a shitload of nutritionally empty calories, it's the calories that cause weight gain. I notice the article doesn't provide a link to the Danish study on organ fat gain in soda drinkers.

Mexico, largest consumer of soda in the world

Best Growth Stock – The average per capita consumption of soft drinks in Mexico amounted to 163 liters per year, while its neighbor barely exceeds 118.

With a higher intake per person in 40% of the United States, Mexico is the largest consumer of soda in the world, according to results of research director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, Kelly Brownell, revealed in conference.

Therefore, these associations consumer advocates demanded the government imposing a tax of 20 percent for sodas, sugary juices and related beverages high in calories.

The purpose of this assessment respond, according to Alejandro Calvillo, director of Consumer Power AC, the recommendations of international organizations on comprehensive policies to combat obesity, since “these drinks are the main source of caloriesâ€￾ in the North American country .

He recalled that both the World Health Organization (WHO), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and United Nations (UN) have called on the Government to take action against this epidemic, “have been ignored.â€￾

Calvillo also cited statements by Angel Cordova, Secretary of Health, who said the problem of obesity exceeded the response capacity of the public health system and is expected to be required in six years to 14,000 million dollars, all the budget this portfolio to cope.

One such tax on soft drinks’ would cause a reduction in consumption of 16 to 24%, “which would result in a decrease in caloric intake and an improvement in the economy of families,â€￾ spend, mostly more soft drinks than in eggs, beans or tortillas, “he said.

In addition, he suggested that those resources could improve the health of the population and have more state resources to address the health consequences of high intake of these products.

As an example referred to the introduction of free drinking water fountains in schools and public spaces, which would further reduce the indiscriminate consumption of soft drinks in both urban and rural areas.

“Our country has become a factory of anemic and obese, because people with these habits pass from malnutrition to obesity by replacing the soft drink nutritional beverages,â€￾ said Dolores Rojas, coordinator of Oxfam Mexico.

Rojas said his proposal is “timely and concreteâ€￾, so to bring drinking water to those who do not, on the eve of the definition in the Mexican Congress next year’s budget.

According to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier De Schutter, who in June made an official visit to Mexico, seven of every 10 Mexicans suffer from obesity.

Soft drinks are terrible for your body.

If you keep on drinking soft drinks, it will damage your kidneys to the point that you may need to be permanently placed on a dyalisis machine.

However, if you have to have a soft drink, clear soft drinks such as sprite, sierra mist and 7up are better for your body.

But I would stear clear of soft drinks PERIOD.
You're where you're at in life because of your thoughts.

But if you don't drink soft drinks, then what will you drink with pizza? Nothing goes better with pizza that soft drinks. They are a great combo together, like ketchup and fries, that really hits the spot. lol

Oh you guys have to get a life! Freaking brainwashed Americans! Who cares about eating pizza? Processed pizza's, which are 95% of the ones made in America are just total crap and junk. You eat pizza by itself and then chase it with water. Got it? Popcorn? Have you ever tried pop-corn in foreign countries? It's a night and day difference, first. Second, it's one of the worst things you can eat, especially considering tons of butter Americans put into their popcorn.

Tacos? I hope they are not made in Taco Bell, right? Chipotle Taco's go well with beer or *water*. Yeah, if you eat flavorfull food, everything goes well with water.

ONE HUGE thing, I am sure Arab can add more here. In traditional Middle Eastern countries (Uzbekistan and Tajikistan too), people live under very hot climate most of the year. Food is rice, oil and meat boiled together or shish kebob with veggies etc. BUT most of the food is then chased with HOT TEA, yes, HOT. And those people live in the desert!

Have you guys tried to eat cold fatty food? Burger or pizza or fries? What happens to it? Yeah, it tastes like crap etc. THAT's what happens to food in your stomach when you chase it with freezing cold SODA. In other words, all of the oils get into jelly condition in your stomach, which slows down or stops digestion.

Trust me, older civilizations know what they are doing. I switched to hot tea every time I go out to eat, if they have no tea - I take water without ice. NIGHT and DAY difference! I have way less heartburn and I feel much better. Not to mention, I feel great about drinking more natural stuff and not sponsoring evil soda empires.

You drink soda with popcorn and tacos al pastor? O_o lol Sorry, it seems like a strange combination to me. I don't drink soda, don't like the carbonation of soda...the frizzyness. It hurts when it comes back up through my throat. I avoid soda and ususally drink water, cold lemonade and (iced/hot) tea. I don't like Jarritos (popular Mexican soft drink) either lol

@have2fly: Hot tea does helps with digestion of food but not many restraunts place sell it. The only places that do offer hot tea are sit down Asian resturaunts (Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc). In those places, I usually drink hot tea. In other places , I get water, iced tea and lemonade...but I doubt Nestea Iced Tea and Minute maid Lemonade are any healthier  They have loads of sugar. I don't drink soda, I don't like the carbonation of it. It kind of hurts when the carbonation comes back up on me....ughh

If the information of the OP is right, I'm glad I don't drink soda

I was talking about HOT TEA, not ICED TEA. Nestea and other crap Iced Teas are the same shit as a soda! You have to make sure they serve you a hot cup of water with a tea bag in it, that's what the whole thing is about!

Actually, most places do offer hot tea, it's just that Americans are so brainwashed since childhood to drink soda everywhere they go! I salute to Pepsi and Coca Cola marketing departments! That's what America is all about - people have no idea what they actually need or like, they only choose what they are told to choose! And no one even knows that or is thinking about it! To me as an immigrant it was clear since I stepped off the plane.

I dont know what part of the USA you are in, but when I go back I am in the Mountain west, Arizona, or the Northwest, and one does not need to eat the
crap diet you outline above. In my circle of people, I do not know anyone who eats fast food type stuff except on occasion. We often do collaborative
meals in well worn cooks kitchens, with the healthiest fresh ingredients- often organics.

Even here in the Philippines we cook very healthy fresh meals, typically oriented around the produce ingredients of the meal. I suspect you and the Arab
would be quite at home with the fresh wholesome foods we eat routinely. Grilled fish, steamed vegetables, brown rice, fresh fruit salads and fresh Mango juice to drink. Rather than have me read off the ingredients for Tinola ..better yet..go here..a really good Philippines soup
http://www.simplecomfortfood.com/2009/0 ... cken-soup/
and check it out. This is a traditional kind of "grandma's kitchen" soup you would enjoy and is served regularly at the Outwest cafe..aka my kitchen.

Variations can be made with Malunggay - a traditional fresh herb leaf...
This can be available by times in the USA in Asian markets.

http://healthassistant.blogspot.com/200 ... table.html
delicately flavored and very therapeutic!

One variation with this is a pot of nicely simmered butter clams in the shell, with plenty of onion, seasoned to taste and at the last drop in a couple of handfuls of Malunggay leaf- then turn off the heat. A couple of people can destroy a large pot of this in no time!

If I get really ambitious I may post a good chicken adobo recipe...

Lunch is ready...
