There's nothing to stop you from buying C++ books from online bookstores or auctions, right?
If you go with a used copy or an older version or edition, they are way cheaper than new.

That's much cheaper than a class & you learn at your own pace.
Look up Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days or Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours.

I wouldn't think of it in such a black & white terms. College education can be overrated, boring and expensive. This doesn't mean one can just jump into a highly technical job, such as software development, without at least some structured learning and, say, about 1000 hours of practical experience. If, as I believe, you're neither dumb nor lazy and just frustrated about your college, then chances are high-quality online learning might be a good solution. The web has a plethora of top-quality online courses that are not only (often) designed by top-tier academic staff, but also completely free of charge.

Here's a few links to get you started:

https://www.coursera.org/courses?orderb ... ,cs-theory
http://www.openculture.com/computer_sci ... ee_courses
http://www.extension.harvard.edu/open-l ... er-science

Coursera follows quite a disciplined approach - you're supposed to study hard, hand in the coursework by the prescribed deadlines and pass an exam. It's one of the reasons why more and more employer are recognising it and I know a few of my colleagues who are proudly putting them on their CVs.

Good luck!

Is programming such a good idea? There are plenty of unemployed programmers and CS graduates. Corporate programming appears to be a bit of a joke and becoming infested with females, wogs and suchlike. And programming has inherent downsides and a career.

Cornfed we just had some corn from the Farmers Market that I bought this week, it tastes nothing like what the communist want our food to taste like. It actually has taste because all the nutrients are in it and it is not like eating a card board box, Cornfed don't eat the Elites corn, it will kill you.

MR. DARCY , Most of the people in my town are idiots.

I live in a college town as well and it sounds like you do not fit into the herd mold. Anybody with a brain here in town is realizing they are being duped and programmed by the state when attending the schools these day's. If you want to play the game and try and fit into the socialist plan to a degree you should finish a degree so you can work your way up by kissing the credit monopolies a$$.

Things are difficult, you need to decide what direction you want to take your life, the system we have allowed to be laid does suck but it is all of our fault by letting things be like this by being selfish and not laying a solid foundation for future generations. This really does not apply to the youth such as yourself however.

It shows hope that you are like what the fu ck, this is what humanity needs, more who ? the human condition such as yourself.

I am thinking of doing something similar, at least, not going to college here in the US. i can't stand being in the US.

We all know you seem to be allergic to anything that involves you sitting in an office, rubbing shoulders with a manager and - OMG - a few women! :)

Yet, let's face it: computer programming is a desk job like many others, and possibly more creative and fulfilling than many others. I for one am not young anymore and starting to feel the stress of working for investment banks where internal politics and volatile budgets don't make developing great software quite possible. I know many people who work for half or my money (or less) in smaller companies or software houses and are happier. I am running my own side project which will hopefully grow into a fully-fledged product I could sell outright or integrate for a consultancy fee. Problem is, I still have bills to pay, which is why a desk job continue to have its appeal.

Unfortunately, in the world of white collar work, a bachelors degree is now a mandatory rite of passage, thanks to some HR minutiae.

When I'd graduated from college, now over a dozen years back, a paralegal, working for a law office, could have an associates degree but today, just to be in that legal office, outside of an internship, he/she would need that undergrad degree, even if it's in a nonsense subject like Underwater Basket-weaving.

The world has changed and not for the better. As for courses like chemistry, really if you're not premed (or ancillary health care), don't bother with 'em. Typically speaking, courses like organic chemistry are designed to give the onlooker, a lower GPA, since they're the ones, not studying all the time, for admissions to a postgraduate medical school or have the 7x24 study habits of let's say a biomedical engineer.
Many years ago, the Best Picture of 1999, "American Beauty", telegraphed the message of Happier Abroad to the world.

Beware of long term engagements with AWs, you may find yourself in a coffin.

BTW, despite settling down with an AW, myself, the warning is still in effect.

you have hit the spot as to why a lot of times, a college education is useless here in the US.

I am getting the feeling that college is just another trap used by the system here in the US to trap people in here via high college debts (college debts are "good" according to a lot of american people), turning them into debt slaves.

The college deal is just another bubble to try and keep America a float a little longer, back when the America was declared bankrupt in 1933 the social engineer's had FDR come out and ask if we the people wanted them to create jobs that were just to create jobs that were not necessarily productive and the herd said YAA! YOU GET WHAT YOU ASK FOR IN THIS ONE!

So the social engineers have been busy building a world wide house of cards they call Globalism at the moment and all it's going to do in the long run is make the coming mass dieoff of the human race bigger this century.

America should have collapsed along time ago and the world ECO system would have been much better off if it had, alot of the tension building in society just comes from living in a civilization where we really do nothing productive like we did 30 to 50 years ago.

A 250,000 $ education of debt to shuffle paper and made up digits around and put the rest of us in handcuffs as you are doing it = ATTORNEY/ Accountant / Banker class ! and they call this a productive society  ?

People do not realize the socialist plan is a total cluster fu ck, we live in a finite world. Scientist have been telling us for decades what is going on and nobody will listen including the Elite, they had a game plan and it's not going to work so it's time for all of us to pay the piper this century.

The economy is becoming much more efficient with todays technology so we do not need all these people around because to keep shop does not take near what it used to. 2 people can now feed a hundred and rather than educate all of us for sustainability on our world for the future they built a infinite growth model of Ponzi in order to try and lay claim to all the world and implement their one world system.

If you want to try and fit in the Elite game plan then college is for you, how many will find a good nitch with a college degree ? I bet far more will be have not's with todays degrees than haves.

I am not very optimistic about what is coming, I think going into survival mode may be better for most and try and become grounded back to the planet in communities that are heading towards being grounded. I think you will find the family unit along with family traditions will seat again heading for this type of environment.

Without getting into the whole overlords thing, the process of getting more and more of the so-called best (or smartest) persons into the paper shuffle fields can no better be illustrated than recent trends at MIT. Yes, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the most prestigious tech school in the country. Since the early 2000s, ~40%+ of MIT graduates have been recruited by management consulting or financial services firms. Now realize this, MIT isn't the typical Ivy college like Dartmouth or Brown, where rich kids sit around, take unmarketable humanities classes, while waiting about to join their daddy's firms upon graduation. In contrast, MIT is suppose to produce the best, next generation innovators and far thinking scientists. Yet, it's clear once the kids are in the system that the best place to be is outside of actually 'making things' (unless they're specifically talking about working at Google, & building some ad services) but to be managing the resources and financing for these innovations. 20 years ago, this simply wasn't the case.

Yes, it is as if the elite have given up on actually producing anything, are happy to let the entire global system collapse over the next five years, and are putting all their effort into stealing the entire contents of the world before that happens. Very strange. Perhaps they know of some major disaster in the making and are preparing for that.

Look into study abroad programs. If your college doesn't offer it, transfer to another one that does.

As I've stated previously in other threads, as a study abroad foreign student, you get a free pass card to get into some of the best and most prestigious universities around the world. Not only in developing countries like China, but also Western European countries like France, where local students have to compete hard to get into the top schools.

However, be prepared to pay for it. It won't be cheap.

Also, if you want to learn C++ or some computer skills, just sign up with lynda.com. Pay the nice Jewish lady $25/month and you have access to more online courses than you'd ever take.

They want to produce but they want it done cheap like in Asia, all you have to do is look at UN 21 and you can see they want to deindustrialize America, The big Schools like MIT are just going after the $'s the wealthy families have to offer for them and in return they will set their children up with the kosher jobs in a nonproducing herd like cattle America of today, but these people graduating from these schools will be the managerial class doing the herding for the Elite as we are managed on a spread sheet.

There is nothing new about this, they did the same thing in England to their own people just like is being done here, The English people served their purpose for the Elite and then they just passed the baton to America for the next step in their plan and now it is being passed to Asia.

F William Engdahl's book " A Century of War and Oil Politics " is a great read on this.

The Elite know there is a big Die Off coming of humanity, that is why they are building arks around the planet to try and save what they can from the coming mass extinction.

You've confused MIT for Harvard. Very few children of the elite want to attend MIT because it's a challenging curricula. MIT is the govt/defense sector money sponge and at the same time, they have their students (mainly graduate/postdoc) do a lot of the base case R&D work for the Depts of Def and Energy which are handled by the principal investigators at the university. MIT, on the whole, selects students from the middle class with the high science/math abilities. I'd worked with numerous MIT grads, these guys were clearly not born rich.

With the above said, what happens is that since McKinsey Co & Goldman Sach actively recruit at Harvard, just down the street from MIT, those management consulting and financial outfits have expanded their dragnet to include MITers, as they make for diligent worker bees for the Harvard MBA graduates. But it's widely known that while MITers are alleged math & science geniuses, the joke goes that in the end, they end up working under Harvard men. Thus, people who have the capacity for 'making things' end up becoming corporate men for the money changers.

Well of course. The hereditary aristocracy has reasserted itself, and the elite obviously don't think they need to be able to actually do anything to earn their positions. Work is for the plebs.
