Sexy spring: How group sex will liberate Iran

It's a neo-conservative nightmare: In Iran and China, Western sexual values are bringing about real change

When talking about their weekend adventures, some of Mahdavi’s informants focused on the recreational aspect of the parties: “[There is] alcohol, there is sex, there is dancing, there is—it’s just fun! It’s what we do for fun!â€￾ Others viewed the parties as a representation of “all things Western,â€￾ a way of gaining status and claiming a cosmopolitan identity; some also expressed ideas about sex as freedom that harked back to ideas underlying the sexual revolution in the United States.

Still others claimed parties offered escape and “eased the painâ€￾ of living in Iran. As one man said, “Sex is the main thing here; it’s our drug, it’s what makes our lives bearable, that’s what makes parties so necessary.â€￾ “If we don’t live like this, we cannot exist in the Islamic Republic,â€￾ a woman declared. “We hate our government, despise our families, and our husbands make us sick. If we don’t look fabulous, smile, laugh, and dance, well then we might as well just go and die.â€￾

But the new sexual culture in Iran, Mahdavi believes, is not simply an embrace of Western consumerism and morality nor merely an escapist hedonism, a “last resort.â€￾ Urban young adults, the focus of Mahdavi’s inquiry, made up about two-thirds of Iran’s population; they were mobile, highly educated, underemployed, and dissatisfied with the political regime at the time. Some were directly involved in politics. Many used the Internet to make connections, blog about their frustrations, and peer into youth cultures elsewhere around the world.

Willingly taking risks with their social and sexual behavior, as these Iranian young people were doing, was viewed as a step toward social and political reform—not just a means of escape and excitement.

After all, the consequences of partying in Tehran were different from in Los Angeles, despite similarities in flashy dress, electronic music, and group sex. Iranian youth had “restricted access to social freedoms, education, and resources (such as contraceptives or other harm-reduction materials)â€￾ that might minimize the risk of some of their behaviors. If caught, the punishments many young people would receive from their parents would likely be harsh. The punishments meted out by the morality police could be harsher.

If caught drinking, for example, youth could be detained and sentenced to up to seventy lashes. Premarital sex could be punished by imprisonment and lashings; unmarried men and women caught in a car together could receive up to eighty-four lashings each. Although physical punishment has decreased in recent years, Mahdavi notes, young people are still detained and harassed by the morality police.

So, do you guys think all of this a good thing or bad thing for countries like Iran?

I'm 100% sure it's just a bunch of dudes and maybe one or two girls being pressured by their boyfriends. Like that student orgy at UofT.

Just another sensationalist article about sex.

In Iran the higher economic classes have always despised islam and followed western sexual mores.this isn't new.they Backed the shah, and during his days Iran was like the Thailand of the middle east.

I don't think much will change, drug use, promiscuity and partying are quiet tolerated in Iran as long as its kept among the upper classes that live in certain areas of northern Tehran.

the middle and lower classes are and always have been conservative and the higher class has always been closet agnostics and support the USA/Israel and do drugs, have sex etc both classes hate each other and are like night and day.

what I'm basically saying is that this isnt something new or unknown to people who visited Iran.Expat Iranians and upper class are secular, westernized and their promiscuity and shallowness would make the average hedonistic westerner look like an Angel.

I doubt that the middle or lower classes aka the majority are affected by these social Trends.nor are rural dwellers.

this is sensationalism.

After I met a few party girls and some guys from Iranian families back in my college days, I did some research and found the same thing and was kinda shocked at how liberal Iran used to be. Like you said though, this orgy thing is nothing really new.

exactely this has been happening since the shah's days.its only limited to a certain class though.the average middle and lower class iranian or rural farmer isn't having premarital sex.

there is a huge class divide in Iran, the poor hate the rich for being so degenerate.and the rich ones hate the poor for supporting the Islamic Republic and not following western values wich they think is enlightenment, and ''holding Iran back''.

most Expat Iranian are so slutty because their parents were from the rich upper classes.

I'd also like to Add that most of the elite Iranains are Atheists or want to return back to zoroastrianism.

there is a docu from Rageh Omar where he interviews the different social classes of Iran and their differing morals etc

go to 33:50 where he says''if it wasn't for the hijab, this could be L.A''

at 34:12 the lady says how sex and drugs is worse than other countries there.

He visits northern Tehran(where all this''action''is taking place)and interviews some pretty women on premarital sex etc

people have to also remember Iran is so diverse.some cities are more liberal than others, some regions are more liberal than others.Shiraz is very liberal while Mashhad is very conservative for example.Yazd is very conservative.qom is super conservative.in fact most states are very conservative except Isfahan, northern Tehran, and Shiraz.and even isfahan and Shiraz's ''liberalism''are just a more''moderate''way of being conservative in a european's eyes.

South tehran is conservative and gets called Backward alot by the snobby promiscouis Northern Tehran socialites.

No different than differing regions in America,or Japan.

is Vegas or San Fransisco the same as rural Montana or Utah?
