Skype a dating site?

Post by gsjackson »

I got a skype account a few weeks ago, and put a picture on it recently. Now I'm getting requests from attractive (to judge by their pictures) young women from various countries to add them as a contact.

Being more or less oblivious about social media, I'm wondering what gives here? Does skype double as a match-up site? I got it to make cheap calls, and maybe to try Ladislav's English teaching online, but if young women from hither and yon want to use it to contact me, I guess I'm OK with that.

Yes, Skype can be used for dating purposes. I even use Skype here in China, although QQ is more popular here...

How do they access your information? Can skype users just file through one account after another? Put more clearly: How did these women find me?

No! It must be spammers then, just randomly looking up Skype addresses to use. Avoid them at all costs!

I don't get that on Skype. There is a member directory on Skype that people can use to search for people. But usually women on there do not use it to search for new men to meet.

Skype is for chatting with people you already know and have met elsewhere. I don't know of people who search for new people to talk to on there. Never heard of that. I tried to meet new women there once through member directory but the women there don't seem to want to talk to a stranger.

It's possible they are scammers?

What's the scam? If I clicked on "accept" to add them to my contact list, what might happen?

I must say that, while none of them are underdressed, three of the six are standing in a somewhat provocative way to accentuate their curves. Could hookers be working skype? And if so, why would hookers from France, Poland, etc. try to contact someone in the US? Or maybe they're trying to drum up business for their webcam sites?

Generally nowadays random contact requests from strange women on chat services are just spam. Usually to get you thinking it's a real women, it's actually a bot or someone that has copy/paste texts for various phrases you might reply with. Eventually they want you to go to a video/chat website which is basically pay per minute live video/chat porn. That's been my experience.

They will try to solicit you to do a webcam chat where you pay a lot per minute. Either that, or they will ask you to wire money to them so they can come to meet you. They can use any photo and tell you that they are from anywhere they want. Try it and you'll see.

That's what I don't know. Winston says there's a membership directory, but I don't know how it's accessed.

Is there any way to make yourself appear offline to some of your Skype contacts but not others? Sometimes I want to chat with somebody without being bothered by others.

I keep getting these -- seven women now, and three video messages that I'm unable to access. I haven't responded to any of them. Is this happening to anybody else who uses Skype?
