What's your career? Shanghai is very much all about finance. Time spent in China is a great thing to put on your resume though. When I was studying there we only had 2 other Brits in the entire University. I talked to one of the guys, he was having a fantastic time (as was I of course).
I just got a new job in the travel niche, so that time spent in China is going to pay off further down the path.
Never miss and opportunity to see the world. Once you marry and settle down, the option diminishes. If I were you, I would do it.

Cool story, bro.
The smog in China IS bad, but is vastly over-reported in the West. I recall a story about Beijing making billboards of the sun or something to that effect because supposedly Beijingers had forgotten what the sun looked like. You will still see the sun. Unless you are already sickly, you will be fine. And you can always wear a mask. Ironically, I saw fewer people wearing face-masks in Beijing than in the little dumpy town city where I live.
How do the big cities in China compare to Hong Kong in regard to smog? I walked EVERYWHERE for a week while there and I got headaches every single day. I realized it was due to the air I was breathing in. I wasn't wearing a mask or cloth over my face like many of the locals were though...
The main problem in Guangzhou were the 6+ lane freeways full of traffic - the air was horrible next to them.
Actually the air was pretty bad everywhere in Guangzhou but that was more due to the humidity than anything.
Having said that I used to clean my apartment and the soot was just awful. We get a bit of that in England, but in Guangzhou I had to clean it off once a week.
Dude. Come on. You gotta post more info than that and/or some links to what you're talking about. Your post is very incomplete. Please don't do that next time. You are lowering the quality of posts here.
