They're buckling under pressure from the non-monger tourist industry. Mongers are a drop in the bucket compared to non-monger tourists (though guys on this forum would never know that, since they live in the monger bubble). The NGOs encourage women and manginas in the developed countries to take their tourist dollars to countries not associated with mongering, and the Thais fear this loss of tourist dollars, not the NGOs directly.

I agree Frank. Wanted to expand on why me and the wife visit Bangkok/Phuket on a yearly basis these days. Cathy is one of those rare Filipinos that don't have a huge desire to go back to her home country to visit. She says, "there is a good reason why I wanted to leave there in the first place" and for her, Thailand holds much more excitement and fun.

Every year, we've been flying her mother and brother over from Phils to come meet us in Thailand. It's a nice opportunity for Cathy's family to experience something different and it's been working out well for all of us.

Ok, now I'll get to my main point LOL. Cathy and I will fly into Bangkok a few days early before her family arrives. This gives us time to shake off the jetlag and Cathy always enjoys going to the Chatuchak Weekend Market. But it's interesting to see the reaction from the Thais when we are on a packed SkyTrain. I'm 54 and she's a very young looking 35 years old. She can easily pass for Thai and you can sense the negative attitude dripping off the native citizens when they see us. I know they are thinking, "oh there's another old sexpat running around with a Thai bar girl." The younger generation doesn't seem to be as forgiving these days. We get a lot of hostile looks and what this tells me is that the citizens of Bangkok are getting fed up with the sex tourism scene.

Naturally all this changes once Cathy opens her mouth and speaks almost perfect English. Then they instantly realize she's not a Thai bar girl/we are married and their look of disdain vanishes within seconds. We see this from waiters to hotel staff...well from all the Thais.

Their initial reaction speaks volumes and I can see why the pressure to eradicate the P4P scene is coming from. But if this is the case, you do have to realize that it's not just older white men who partake in this hobby. Highly involved are guys from all over the world along with wealthier Thai guys as well. It's a very complicated issue. One thing for sure is that the P4P almost single handedly propels the economy of Issan. Without it, how does this region sustain itself? You almost hate to look at this fact under a microscope but it's true. What many fail to realize is that it's very common for the poor Issan family's decision to send their daughters away to Bangkok/Phuket to make a living.

I once watched a great documentary on TV. The show brought in a bunch of kids from wealthy families and the intent was for to work in various areas just to see how much money they could make in a day. This episode was in Bangkok. The kids worked from morning to evening loading up sacks of rice. At the end of the day they were paid the equivalent of around $3-$5. One girl was heard saying, "ah now I know why so many become prostitutes."

This is a very very complicated issue!

Arent these massage soapy parlors paid up with the right people in terms of bribes? Why would they shut down a place just for a few minor violations? Why not just impose penalties for the underaged girls and go?

Why would thai authorities comply with western anti trafficking groups? Whats in it for them? Why would thai authorities let foreign powers tell them what to do? I thought thais were too proud of their own culture?
They probably are paid up, but did you read article? It's a foreign, western NGO that is coming in and shaking things up. As someone above mentioned, it is probably a western feminist organisation, as most NGOs that deal with human trafficking tend to be.

This is no different than anywhere else in Asia, buckling under pressure from the west, usually USA, and changing their own laws.
But why would a thai business care what an NGO tells them? What bargaining power does an NGO have? What does NGO stand for? Who funds them? How do they profit? They shouldn't exist. They have no logical reason to exist. Why doesnt the thai government tell them to f**k off and mind their own business?

@Winston: Please read my explanation above and think carefully about it. It addresses your last question.

As to why the NGOs exist, it's like with those sickening videos of hunters bludgeoning baby seals to death, people get angry and send money to the people who make those videos. Similar situation with lurid videos about tiny underage Thai girls hemorrhaging in the hospital after being deflowered by a loud drunken sex tourist, probably one of those bald obese British soccer thug types, with a Viagra hardened eight inch battering ram that rips the poor girl to pieces inside... The old sex starved pearl clutchers watch these videos because they are so bored, work themselves into a rage, then send of some money to the NGO, then get to feel very self-righteous about themselves (and then have vivid dreams that night about being ripped open with an eight inch battering ram themselves). So that's why the NGOs exist. My previous post explains why the NGO has indirect power over the Thai government.

An NGO, which stands for non-governmental organisation, has influence by their ability to bring negative media attention to any issue they like. They make documentaries, get stories printed in the paper, and even get TV news to take notice of things. That media attention can force a Thai business or government to care what an NGO tells them. And you're right, they shouldn't exist. They exist so that middle aged first world women can tell the rest of the world how to live.

I remember when I was young there used to be companies in the USA that specifically arranged sex tours to Thailand, Cambodia, and other SEA destinations. Just like any other tour package, the customer paid their money to the tour company and they would be flown over there, set up in hotels and taken to bars to get girls. This included the potential for sex with underage girls, as, at that time, it technically wasn't illegal. Back then, countries all around the world had different age of consent laws, some as low as 12.

The NGOs focused solely on this underage issue, following these companies and their customers, shooting video etc. These guys would openly walk in the street holding hands with a young teen since it wasn't illegal. The NGOs brought international media attention to this with the idea that sex tourism, or flying to SEA to get girls was only for the purpose of getting underage girls. Basically, anyone who went over there for women was a pedophile. That's how it was framed in the media. These companies, of course, went out of business. Laws got changed, or new laws got passed, and the effect was on many countries, nto just USA or Thailand.

Just like with all the stuff that happened in Japanese media, how an NGO frames an issue, and the level of media attention they bring to it, can have a devastating effect on business. Their strategy is simple. If you can put out a bunch of news stories saying such and such restaurant is using cat meat in their dishes, people are going to stop going there, right? They can force that restaurant to do whatever they want.

But, 99.9% of them were short to tiny (many under 5 ft), dark, spoke bar girl English, and really pretty much looked the same after you saw a few dozen.
Perhaps the punters are trying to make sure that they don't accidentally get a ladyboy?

This is all the more reason why we must start FIGHTING BACK! And for this purpose, I wrote the essay "Are Prostitutes Better Than Normal Women?"

I am going to make it go VIRAL, and if enough of us did stuff like that, we would raise awareness enough so that society would be forced to legalize prostitution, or at the very least, it would put the topic of legalization into the mainstream discussion.

f***ing Amnesty International of all people, the largest NGO, has just released a paper explaining why they think the governments NEED to legalize prostitution. So, don't give up guys. FIGHT BACK and we are making a lot of progress. If you are afraid to discuss the topic openly, then do it anonymously. Go to various message boards, chats, whatever, and bring up this topic. Or just cut and paste my essay and send it to all your male friends. Together, we men can fight back and legalization prostitution. f**k feminists and their f***ing fat cunts.

So who funds these NGO groups? Where do they get their money from?

Why doesn't the Thai king or Thai ambassador to the United States talk to the US President and complain about NGO's interfering with their country's businesses? Make it a diplomatic issue, in other words. They should tell them: "We don't appreciate these NGO's lying about our country and spreading false allegations about underaged girls and human trafficking."

I also don't understand why Nataree would have a few underaged girls. Don't they check the official ID of all their girls? Or was that made up by the NGO's? If so, they should be sued for libel and defamation.
