Why do most American kids hate school but foreign kids love it?

Post by Winston »

Why is it that most kids in the US hate school and consider it to be like a prison? They get really excited and celebrate, for example, when school gets canceled for the day. But kids in other countries, like the Philippines, love school and consider it an honor and blessing to go to it?

Is it because the US school system dehumanizes kids, takes away their individuality and makes them feel like "raw material" to be processed? I certainly felt that way, like I was there to be indoctrinated.

This film makes some good points about that. It features a couple independent researchers and freethinkers explaining how the US education system dumbs down kids, turning them into a left brained slave labor force. One guy makes a good point about how artistic and music programs in schools are constantly cut to promote left brain programs.

By the end of middle school I was utterly bored to death of school. By high school I literally felt I was in a real prison. You waste 9+ hours a day learning things that could be taught in an hour. At some point you look around and figure out school isnt about learning, but about breaking your spirit and indoctrinating you in what the state wants you to believe.

Yeah I was bored out of my mind by the end of the 7th grade. That's because they don't teach much.

IN high school the only thing that is done well is the sports programs. There is very little knowledge that gets transfered to the high school student. Content has been taken out so that everyone passes.

Honestly, I think they cut way more than just music & art but almost everything. For instance, when I attended a public secondary school a decade ago, the maths teacher did not know how to teach basic algebra for instance. I doubt he even knew what he was doing. Basically if you wanted to learn it and expected to pass, you had to teach yourself it.

School is fun if you enjoy your experiences there, and not fun if you hated it. In Jr. high I went to school to play ball and dungeons and dragons with friends (pen and paper RPG days). In high school we watched Japanese anime (rented video) during lunch time in a borrowed class room, and I got to work on my first car in auto shop. My cousin, for whatever the reason, opted to take a class where he got to raise pigs. Well, whatever made him happy (oink oink).

I had an excellent student-teacher relationship with several teachers in Jr high and HS, and worked as TA for them. I recall we had IBM PS/2 model 25's with VGA screens, which was a huge improvement over TRS-80's. I spent a lot of time playing 688 attack sub. The color graphics were a huge improvement over Ultima on the Apple ][.

HS also offered a lot of opportunities for those who wants to get into trouble. Local Hispanic (Hawaiian Gardens), Black, and Philippino gangs (Cerritos) didn't like each other much and some sold dope in school. In my Spanish class, guy to my right passed a joint over my desk to the girl to my left to trade for "some head" later. I was like... F@#@%@#@^@^$, do it somewhere else.

Ha! I used to play those games; I was the ultimate Ultima junkie. I used to spend hours everyday after school and the weekends finishing Ultima IV, V & VI. I played Ultima I & III but they were pretty cheesy after playing the newer versions. I loved that game, V was probably my favorite one.

I remember 688 Attack sub, I think I got pretty good at it after a while. There was some other sub game where you could be a soviet sub or American but can't remember the name of that game.

Looking back I can't believe my father let me play video games all the time and never checked whether I studied or did my homework. I guess that's why I only achieved around a "C" average in high school. I was kinda a loner in HS and didn't really have many friends so computer games took up the loss I guess. Getting lost in fantasy worlds appealed to me whether it was on a computer or in a book.

I was at the book store today and noticed book 12 of the "Wheel of Time" series is finally out. I know technically only some of it is written by the original author Robert Jordon before he died, but at least the series can finally come to a conclusion even if someone else completed the final story line. I should reread all of them now that they can be listened too one after another.

"Update" I guess they are going to break up the last book into 3 mini volumes. They say there are too many pages to print in one book. I say they just want to make more money by breaking up the last book into 3 volumes. Typical of publishers nowadays...

I used to play lots of different types of role playing games. The friends that were into that got bored with D&D so we played other games and even sometimes made up our own games. I would rather have just played D&D all the time but I was out voted usually for Sci-Fi type games.

I think in 688 attack sub you can play either the Los Angeles class SSN or Soviet Alpha class SSN. Another great game was Wolfpack:

I played so many CRPG's, it's hard to remember them all. @_@ Memorable ones: Tunnels and Trolls (computer game version), Wizardry, Dungeon Master, Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, lots of SSI's D&D games...

I played the original Wizardry on an IBM PC with 80186 accelerator card. XD

The best versions of Bard's Tale and Dungeon Master was on the Atari ST. I didn't own one so I had to go to my friend's house to play it there. I did buy an Amiga 1000 but the Amiga ports came late, and lacked some of the features. I think the ST version of Bard's Tale had monk chants and others didn't.

Pen and Paper RPG's I played back then: D&D, AD&D, Star Frontiers, Warhammer FRPG, etc. Favorites were AD&D with Unearthed Arcana expansion, and Star Frontiers with Zebulon's Guide expansion.

I managed to graduate HS with honors by taking easy (non-AP) classes. Spent most of my time playing games or watching anime with friends. At the time, my parents had to make a financial decision of either sending me to 4-year college and continue renting, or buy a house and have me attend cheaper alternatives (JC or student loans). I told them to just buy the house and I'll worry about my education. Since I already knew that I was going to community college, I didn't have a lot of incentive to take AP classes and study for the SAT.

Wow check out how much better the school system is in Finland than in the US! School there in Finland is so much more fun, positive and natural! And lets kids be themselves too! That's what HA is about, being able to be yourself! Which you can't do in the US.

Because American schools have become literal prisons designed to turn kids into robots. Designed to dehumanize kids with the dreadful "Mind your own business" and "None of your business" phrases, with detentions for hugging, and with rules that completely discourage kids from ever making friends. American schools are designed to literally teach kids that it is illegal to interact with other people except for business reasons only.

How do you know? When I was in school in the 80's, you were allowed to make friends. The problem was the kids were not friendly but very snobby. You had to be "cool" to have friends and know how to fit in and be popular. I couldn't figure out how to do that. Being outgoing and sociable and friendly wasn't enough. You could be friendly and outgoing and sociable and not have any friends, if you couldn't break into any cliques. But no one in school said that friendships were for business only. I thought that was the adult world. Where did you get that? You mean today's schools in America are different? I thought schools today were more politically correct of course, but not that true friendships weren't allowed. Even I had friendships like shown in the movie "Stand By Me", before I was 14 of course.

This great short video explains how public schools in America are no different than prison systems, and are run in exactly the same manner.

Are schools in foreign countries actually challenging and teach kids useful skills? Cause in America, it's utterly worthless dogshit. Algebra, science, biology, history, utter worthless shit that I have never used a single day in my f***ing life. I took a Home-making class in senior year and that was actually useful. We learned about cooking and basic home skills. It was also pointless but at least I remember some of it. The teacher took us on a field trip to some fancy restaurant where we were expected to remember which forks and which spoons to use for which courses in a particular order. I remember eating marijuana that morning, and feeling slightly high and also paranoid.

American "education" is pure cringe.

I don't remember being "communist indoctrinated" in Middle and High school. It was just utterly boring shit. I do remember a few kids trying to f**k with me, and because of zero tolerance rules, I couldn't f**k with them back or we'd both get expelled. The school system was a feminist hellhole, run mostly by women, most teachers were women. School is where young men learn that women are f***ing bitches and our feminist overlords are cunts.
