Falcon and I will continue to carve out our niches. I'd say the Phillies and Thailand offer you possibilities that would be hard (though not impossible) at home.

Today I dated a university student. Kind of weird to date somebody half your age. But this being Bangkok, nobody gave us strange looks. Definitely one of my best dates ever - if not for her turning up wearing that iconic university uniform that is just so darned sexy.

Learning her language is always a good thing. I need to sit down and learn how to read Thai. Surely it's not rocket science, but if you read the wikipedia article about it then maybe it is!!!

And Rock says the Phillies are complex. I'd say that Thailand is also complex. There doesn't seem to be much relationship between my dates' skin tones and where they're from. Some Thais look almost black, but I've never dated one this dark yet.

Today I dated my first "Southern" girl though. I tell you if she knows how to cook Massaman curry then she's a keeper!!!
In February 2013 I quit my boring job and now I'm Happier Abroad...

You know he did not touch those women! Why did you even bother to ask? A better question to ask is if he threw their hands back if they tried to touch him or feed him.

You may be right. It's kind of funny reading his posts and putting yourself in his shoes. In his world, he's living the wild and crazy adventure and playboy lifestyle in extremely exotic locals. But to my eyes, he's highly risk averse and hard put to get even an inch out of his comfort zone bubble.

Bangkok is over touristed and saturated with expats from all over the world. Every nook and cranny has been explored, written about, analyzed, and videoed. It's about the least exotic place in Asia by now lol. Well it still has a lot of charm and all but it's certainly no secret.

Anyway, Xiongmao is like a confused tourist bumbling around, scratching his head, and trying to make sense of what he sees around him. His writings kinda put you right in his position on his daily outings and all those 'dates'. His perceptions regarding girls and dating are very fickle cus he's not sure what's really going on. He still seems lost.

Taken in that context, his posts are quite entertaining and humorous sometimes.

But I do hope Xiongmao can move further away from his comfort zone and get some serious traction with the girls. Perhaps he should hang-out more with his outgoing and socially fearless friend who I never got to meet. That would certainly spice things up and perhaps give him more opportunities to meet girls via cold approach.

Now that's funny. I think that is the funniest analysis I have ever seen from you. You are dead on though. At first his posts irritated me and confused me. Me, you and AIB are the only ones I think that probably felt that way too at first, but eventually I learned to understand him and laugh at his posts. His writing style is very entertaining too. My wife likes laughing at his misfortunes as well. Sometimes she will ask me if I laugh out loud while reading the forums, "What did Xiongmao do this time?"

Xiongmao comes across as a really nice guy, somebody still trying to work things out and avoid risk at all cost. Sniper game.

I wish he writes more about escalations, you wonder if he is actually getting any or maybe he is just meeting friendly girls.

Aren't the wealthiest and most powerful all Filipino-Chinese? I know the upper class families are Spanish..but being of high "breeding" doesn't necessarily mean you control the real reins of power which tend to follow the flow of industrial and agriculture monopolies. The wealthiest from forbes rankings all seem to be chinese filipinos.
Just to be fair it would be nice if mboy would shout out the same at the thousands of Korean/Japanese/TWese mongers there, too- those do pretty ugly things there. Not shout at his fellow Americans ( yes, siree) in Manila.

I think there is a difference in mongering scenes though. Maybe the Koreans misbehave a lot in the Philippines but in Thailand the NE asian mongers are a lot more well behaved. You tend not to hear too many crazy stories coming from that lot. On the other hand every other day you hear wild tales of kidnapping, murder, extortion, mafia, porno/drug busts, weird deaths etc.. coming from the western mongers. I think the tourist "footprint" is much greater for your average western tourist in some of the SEA countries. Maybe it's because of cultural differences or maybe even money spent but it does seem to have a bigger (negative) effect more often than not.

The idea of Asian brotherhood to oppose the Caucausian sex invaders will not sell to Pinoys. A lone Asian nationalist from the USA will have a voice as powerful as a mosquito's squeak in the Amazon.

I suppose that is true..but the Philippines as a whole doesn't seem to hold that western connection with much esteem when it comes to the bigger picture business deals. Corporations in the Philippines and even the government are kind of notorious for outright scamming western investors in their infrastructure or business deals. Even more so than Thailand. I think these "bigger picture" relationships matter much more in the long run.

Filipino means citizen, foreigner is a non-citizen. Anyone can be a Filipino.

I really don't think it's as egalitarian as you make it out to be. You seem to hype up the Philippines as the super tolerant place ..which is ironically the opposite of what you do with Thailand. A more moderate look at Philippines would see similar SEA class boundaries, racism, and other boundaries. They just take on a different form in the Philippines.

Mguy and I talked about this topic a lot.

You know, middle-class Filipinas and Thais would actually prefer Asian guys over white guys.

At the malls, whenever Mguy saw an older white guy with a young Filipina (who almost wouldn't ever be middle-class), he'd shout out, "Monger!" Or, he'd make some weird noises. Hehehe. :P

It would just be "weird" in Taiwan. No matter no good-looking or conformist/mainstream-looking or Jay Chou-looking you are, I highly doubt that Taiwanese women would ever smile and pose the way these Filipinas did when cold-approached.

Yea, real cute.....definitely not cool.

If someone did this when I was with my wife, I might be tempted to walk up and elbow them in the face and give em a right smacking around without saying a word. Seriously. That's just stupid — even if they were mongers, what business is it of yours? That's the sort of thing I would expect from some f***ing American feminist.

But if Falcon and mguy had been two similar (in terms of height and looks) white guys who had intermediate and native fluency respectively in Tagalog, I highly doubt they would have been recieved any differently. They would have gotten just as much attention, smiles, and engagements.

As for the overall amount of friendliness and warmness, the yes, I'd say about the same level for white guys who are about the same as us in terms of height, looks, and age.

But they're always going to respond to white guys at least a bit differently in Asia. For example, some white guys report that Filipinos just can't imagine white guys speaking Tagalog. Here's what my guidebook says (the author is British), which would apply those who look very obviously non-Filipino:

If you do try to speak Tagalog, however, the reaction is often one of amusement -- and the response will come in English.

Just yesterday I was at a bus terminal in the Visayas. I spoke to the trike and taxi drivers half in English and half in Tagalog. They stared at me for a second or two, and then replied back to me all in Tagalog. So this means they're probably thinking I'm a Filipino from somewhere further up north. But if they were to think I'm a local, they'd speak to me in the local Visayan dialect.

If I were in your place with your date, I might get some strange looks as well. As other HA posters have said, NE Asian guys here aren't known to date very dark women. Personally I don't mind.

So is she as dark as my Isaan girl? :D

In the rural Visayas, I was on trike carrying about 5 people, including me and the driver. Suddenly, there was a tall middle-aged white guy with a T-shirt, shorts, buzzcut, and baseball cap, maybe around 40, out in the middle of the highway with a local Filipina gf. He was the first white guy I had seen here in several days.

Everyone in the trike turns their head around. But no one says a single word. :P

Actually, I'd have a lot of respect for the "old white guys" with local Filipinas in the PI. They're my HA comrades. We've been through the same experiences in the West, and are experiencing the same rejuvenating adventures outside the matrix.

It's mutually beneficial and both parties are very happy. The "old white guys" tend to be very loyal to their partners too. All the best!

Well I guess I should post more about what I'm actually doing in Bangkok. Maybe Falcon and I can have some more crazy adventures here. Before we only met for 3 days or so.

After a bit of a slow start, I've been on a dating rampage here. However, only 4 girls (out of 15?) have made it to second date stage. I ditch any who I don't like because I fear clingy girls. Clingy girls have been a catastrophe for me.

Anyway I must say that this year generally (China and now Thailand) I've really struggled to find The One, or anyone vaguely approaching The One. I had a lot more success in previous years.

I found 4 moderately decent women in China earlier this year. But one was ultra-picky and will be single forever, one was too busy with her life, one I only met the last week I was there, and one was just totally messed up inside.

I think that's just luck more than anything. I'm looking for a particular personality more than anything. And they're quite rare.

If I'd have stayed in China longer I could have had some success with the students I met there. But that would have taken a lot more time and effort. One baked zongzi for me though - that was a great sign!

Anyway, no p4p in Bangkok or Pattaya except for a bit of fun in gogo bars. They are great places to go to help you remember why it's worth bothering meeting women in the first place, and also to shift various ex's out of your head.

Meanwhile in the real world... my Chinese ex was extremely open. Once I read this AskMen article about a guy who wanted his AW wife to do some stuff. Forget what it was now. I thought it funny because my ex was into everything. Some Chinese girls are, and you're a lucky man if you meet one. She was awesome, but we kind of burned things out too quickly.

As to Bangkok, not too much action yet. Got a bad foot massage from the Issan girl I met on wechat. Maybe that's why she only worked on the reception of a massage place (a legit place, not a p4p place). That relationship burned out due to her sister (married to a Thai) wanting a farang husband by proxy or something .

She's been the only Thai girl I've met so far who gave a top notch girlfriend experience (holding hands, that kind of stuff). Yeah, maybe tame but it was heading the right way which is what matters.

Current girl I haven't talked about much. She's young, full of angst and I am crazy to even go there. But I looked at a photo of the 37yo I dated the previous day and thought, yeah, why was I dating a grandmother?

Actually I like a few of the older freelancers here. Some are very hot indeed. But finding similar looking women who aren't freelancers seems pretty difficult.

Rock - the crazy guy I know here has gone back to Guangzhou. Really he's too much of a liability to be a wingman here. China was OK but I worry about him rubbing people up the wrong way here.

Also he's a pain in the ass sometimes (well many times). Especially here. He's also very impulsive, hence his last minute plan to go to Guangzhou.

What can we learn from him? Well if you talk to EVERYBODY you meet in daily life then you'll have no problem finding a girlfriend or making money. Don't bother gaming and shit, just be friendly.

Oh, and don't pay 100 baht for pomegranate juice from a street vendor. He got 6 bottles for 200 baht .

 His comment hit way too close to home for a lot of guys. Mongers are essentially what a lot of them are, and they know it, and they HATE when other people point it out. When you see those couples with an old foreign guy and a young girl it's obvious what their relationship is based upon and everyone knows it but most people are too polite to say it to their face. You should hear the way Filipinos talk about them and look at them.

I know there are a lot of mongers in some cities abroad.

But when you start throwing around the word "essentially", you are now applying a nasty label to ordinary guys.

When I was young, I STILL took a woman to dinner. Was that "essentially" mongering? Of course not. So why would it be mongering now?

If you're young and broke, enjoy whatever sex you can get on pure looks and charm. We'll all be jealous of you (jk) But if it's OK with you, some of us will still buy dinner.
