Hong Kong Trip Report (with pictures)

Post by Travelin Man »

Hello everyone,

I'm a 32 year old, 6'1 white male that just came back from living in Asia. It started out as a two week vacation which turned into an entire year. Hk is an ex-british colony so the official language is English which makes it easier to find a job than mainland China.

I really loved the culture and can't wait to go back. The women there are much more friendly and I got 10x the attention there than I do in the US. If finding a quality mate is a top priority for you, then I definitely recommend you go abroad.

In Hk there are many British pubs where the women go to meet foreign guys and actually have to pay to get in while foreign men are let in for free. It was like fishing with dynamite!

I have many pictures with the many beautiful women that I have dated there. The girl below was one of the most sweetest girls I've ever met. She took me out places and showed me around the city. She made me feel like I belonged there.

I'm also curious about expat life in Singapore so if anyone has any experience there I would love to hear about it!

Travelin Man,

Based on those pictures, seems like you should be heading back to HK, not Singapore. She is a cutie - if her personality is as nice as her appearance, what are you waiting on :)

Been to Singapore many times, but mainly on 1 or 2 week stints at a time, not on a long term ex-pat assignment. I really like Singapore and would move there in a heartbeat for the right opportunity. I also have a few expat friends in Singapore and they are loving it there. Two of them had their expat assignments end and instead of coming back to the US, they both resigned from their US companies and found new companies to work for in Singapore so that they could stay in Singapore instead of going back to the US. Most of the my Singapore expat friends tell me they do not intend on moving back to the US full time again and several of these guys have found beautiful wives in Singapore. Two have already committed to living in Singapore with their wives and the other ones haven't figured it out yet, but I suspect they will stay in Singapore as well. From what I see when I'm there, the banker expats are in very high demand in Singapore and can pretty much have any local women they want. The banker expats seem to like to flaunt their disposable income and as expected, they attract alot of the money hungry women in Singapore. In some of the expat bars I've been to, the banker expat guys I've met have told me to just tell the women that I'm a banker expat, even though I'm not a banker. I seem to do fine with the ladies there without telling them that I'm a banker, but I can see where it would work. Lots of women there are seriously looking for expat BFs/husbands, although they do not seem to have a huge desire to move to the West. The Singapore ladies I've met mainly want to stay in Singapore long term and want to find an expat who is like minded about staying in Singapore.

The pros of Singapore are:

- it's a first rate country and you most times do not feel like you are giving up any of your western lifestyle while living in Singapore
- it's probably the most diverse place in Asia and better yet, all the different groups actually seem to get along with each other just fine
- it's a very orderly place - very clean, very low crime, very low public disturbances, etc - mainly due to the government being very strict
- most people are bilingual and the majority of people speak English, so you can get around just fine speaking only English
- it's a fairly compact place and you can either walk, take a taxi, or take the subway - it's easy to get around, I walk most places when I'm there
- there are lots of attractions there and you can be in tourist mode exploring all the attractions for quite some time
- plenty of beautiful women there and there seems to be a man shortage in Singapore. Also lots of professional business women there if you like that type, which I do, but they are still very feminine, unlike their American counterparts.

The cons of Singapore are:

- it's expensive - it helps to be on some kind of expat program there to make the economics work. Also like much of Asia, unless you are working with a local who can get you the local price on most things, you will wind up paying the expat/foreigner price for many things unless you negotiate like crazy.
- many women there are all about the money, you definitely have to weed out the gold digger types. Good girls exist - similar to your HK cutie, but most of them are not hanging out where the expats hang out and my buddies who married great women there all met their wives through mutual introductions.
- Singapore is not the place to get in trouble with the strict Singapore government. For most people, this is not an issue, but if like to ignore the rules, this may not be the place for you.
- it's a tropical climate. In the middle of winter in the US right now, it's upper 80s and 90s in Singapore right now and it's fairly humid most days. Your body acclimates with time, but the heat and humidity can be overpowering at times.
- alcohol is very expensive in Singapore - credit the local government trying to deter the locals from getting hooked I guess. They do something similar with gambling there where the locals have to pay a hefty entrance fee to enter the casino, while the foreigners and tourists can enter for free.

One other interesting thing about Singapore which is neither pro nor con. There is an pretty active P4P scene there, although it is restricted to certain areas and establishments. I happened into one of these places by accident on my first trip there. I stopped into the bar in my hotel which had expensive drinks, ok appetizers, a very decent band which had people up and dancing, and a room full of the friendliest batch of 9+ women I had ever met. After more in-depth discussions with some of the ladies, the light bulb came on, but I seriously had no idea at first. Later, my Singapore buddies told me how my hotel bar was one of the few designated places for P4P in Singapore and how there is a whole system to the P4P scene. In an otherwise strict and orderly place, P4P is actually legal in Singapore as long as you play by the rules - interesting. You will find plenty of women to date without using P4P I'm sure, but the option is there if you want it.

All in all, I like Singapore, but be sure you can make the economics work there, and be prepared to ultimately find some very nice women who will primarily want to stay in Singapore and try to convince you to stay there as well. Two of my friends did this and they honestly have never been happier in their lives.

Hey Travelin Man, I just made my first trip to Hong Kong with a Chinese female friend. We stayed for a few days....

The first place I visited, while in Hong Kong, was Victoria Harbor and the Bruce Lee statue and Hong Kong Walk-of-Fame.

What I like about Hong Kong:

1) It is a very cosmopolitan and multicultural city.

2) Lot's of things to see and do there...

3) The Food is very good--with many global ethnic cuisines (reminds of back home in NYC).

4) I saw many interracial couples--even Asian men with Black, Filipino and White women. Also, I think Hong Kong women are more willing to date Black and Indian men than what I saw in China. There were also more White male, Chinese female interracial couples than in China.

5) The food, of course!!!

6) People actually speak English HERE! You don't how much of a relief that is, after having spent so much time in the mainland, where anyone speaking English is met with shock and curious stares and comments. ...

7) Many Western goods and restaurants--at the tip of your fingers!

Things I don't like about Hong Kong!

1) Too fast-paced: reminds me too much of New Jerk City.

2) Too many people here and too crowded--especially in some parts of Hong Kong.

3) The women that I came across in Hong Kong, were nowhere near as pretty as mainland Chinese girls, in my opinion. (I know this opinion will be hotly disputed by some people on the forum.)

4) The pollution and smog is worse than Shenzhen.

5) It's a very expensive city.

6) Some HK'ers can be very rude and brusque.

Overall, Hong Kong was a great trip. I would definitely live in Hong Kong if I could...that is...if I could afford it, LOL! And right now, I can't :(

So, I think Hong Kong might be a good alternative for those not really into living a 'totally foreign experience' in mainland China; especially for those craving a more Western-influenced country.

All that the American guys do in this board is complain about how lame it is to live in the US. And you are surprised people (especially ones which have some idea about what it's like) are not jumping up and down to move there?

Does not compute.

(FWIW I used to be really pro-America until about 3 years ago (mainly because of the culture it projects and some people I knew there that I liked a lot) and then I opened my eyes, and saw that those things are the exception more than the rule.

Magnum - What browser are you using? Try Google Chrome.

GooMacgle - Thanks for the input, it's exactly what I was looking for. I'm back in US now
and I'm debating about going back to Asia. The only problem I have with Hk is the air
pollution. It seems to be getting worse every year and I read that last June it hit a new
record high. I'm waiting to see what happens in one year. Hopefully, they will get their
act together and do something about it like taking the two story diesel busses off the roads.

Singapore looks much cleaner than Hk and the pollution isn't near as bad. The only problem
is finding a company to sponsor me. I work in the IT industry and found quite a few jobs
online, but I'm not sure if the company will want to hire me over a local. Another option
is to find remote work for a company in the US and not be location dependent. Then I would
be living in Singapore as a tourist, but then again, I'm not sure how long I can be there
on that status.

What are your sources about the man shortage in Singapore??? I searched on the internet and
I couldn't find any evidence of that. I know the number of women way out number the men in
Hong Kong and you can find plenty of evidence if you just search "man shortage Hong Kong".
Here is an article that explains why:

http://jezebel.com/alert-alert-man-shor ... 1474976854

Someone - The short answer is: Yes. I don't think I ever did any better than a 7 in Arizona.
My look is not really sought after here. I'm looking to move to San Francisco soon so maybe
things will be different there.

zboy1 - Thanks for the input. I've seen beautiful women in both mainland and Hk. Not sure if
I can give an advantage to one or the other. If you go out in Lan Kwai Fong on Saturday nights
there is no shortage of beautiful girls walking around.

This is another girl I met. She is mixed with Chinese and Thai. She spoke broken English and
it was very hard to understand her. Having a conversation with her was like pulling teeth. We
never talked much, but to my surprise she would always want to "hang out". Go on trips to Lamma
island, the beach at Stanley and over at my place to watch movies on my laptop.

If you're concerned about the air: they recently put up a number of measuring stations to measure air quality. YOu can see their data live here: http://aqicn.org/city/hongkong/

It's generally not good, but not that bad either. It also varies a lot depending on the weather. Recently it got as high as 140 (and a lot of news articles were published at that time about the pollution. I think the HK government is going to take steps against this sort of thing).

Travelin Man,

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co ... _sex_ratio for stats about the male/female sex ratio by country. In short what you find is that in the prime dating age bracket of 15 to 64, the sex ratio in Hong Kong is 94 guys for every 100 gals and in Singapore the same 15 to 64 yrs old sex ratio is 95 guys for every 100 gals, so about the same - this same age bracket sex ratio in the US is 100 guys for every 100 gals for reference. It's all relative I think, but a couple of things probably exaggerate the perceived man shortage in Singapore:

- There is a serious influx of southeast Asian women in Singapore regularly. You see it at the Singapore airport when you are waiting on your flight where you see flights arriving from Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and other Asian countries with nearly all females stepping off the plane. You see the same thing with planes departing to these areas, likely women maxing out their Singapore visa and heading home again for a break until they can come back to Singapore again. No doubt, many of these women are part of the P4P scene, but also likely a bunch of domestic and menial service workers as well.

- Many of the Singaporean guys that I know are serious players or just non-committal and will openly see multiple women. Some of the Singaporean women I met seem to have come to expect that all guys will fool around and essentially see it as normal. Add all the women chasing the limited expat population and you can definitely see where local women feel like there is a man shortage in Singapore, at least when it comes to quality guys.

One example of this - on one of my two week trips to Singapore, I met a local Singaporean lady through an introduction. On our first date, we were talking about things we each like to do and I mentioned that I liked long walks, cooking, and latin dancing on occasion. The Singaporean lady said she did not do any of those things regularly. I saw this same lady 3 more times in that same two week stretch and during those two weeks, she signed up for cooking classes and started taking lessons. She actually cooked me a meal before I left. She also started taking latin dance lessons during that two weeks and said she would be ready to go out dancing with me by my next trip to Singapore. Finally she found a couple of great walking trails in Singapore and we went on some long walks. She paid for everything every time we went out and wouldn't let me touch my wallet. I also jokingly said that I visited Singapore enough times that maybe I should get an apartment there - it was totally tongue in cheek. The next time we met, she had already scoped out apartments for me and had a short list for me to see. All ego aside and as I have said in other posts, I'm just an average guy and I don't presume to be some great catch by far. I tried to have a heart to heart with her on my last date with her to figure out why she was being so accommodating, and essentially, it boiled down to her belief that it was so hard to find a quality guy in Singapore that she wanted to lock me down before I became widely available in Singapore. Don't know that I will be walking down the aisle with her any time soon, but she definitely made a huge impression on me. The wives of my friends in Singapore also tell me about a man shortage there, but honestly they seemed to be such homebodies (in a good way), that I halfway think their man shortage was self induced as I'm sure they were not meeting a lot of guys staying at home all the time.

Singapore women are fairly westernized, so it's possible that when Singapore women tell expat guys that there is a man shortage there, it's really more an issue of Singapore women being too materialistic and going after the expat guys with money. When they say their is a man shortage, they may mean there is a shortage of expat guys with money to feed their shopping habits :) Like I said, it's all relative.

Travelin Man looks great, he'll have no probs finding ladies in Asia.

If he finds nice girls in HK he will always be able to find hotter girls across the border in the mainland.

I also work in IT and it would be nice to find opportunities in that rather than do the usual English teaching stuff. I know there were a few IT jobs in Bangkok. I applied for one but the guy only wanted to pay local wages. Also Thai people never seemed to have any holidays - I'd be better off working in the UK for one year, then taking one year off.

Kuala Lumpur's probably worth checking out. It was mostly very clean there, and there are few foreigners after those cute Malaysian-Chinese girls.

Singapore is so expensive even IT guys can only have a below average lifestyle there.

Bangkok's air was very clean for most of the time I was there, it just got a bit smoggy in the dry season. Given how many crappy buses there are driving round the air was amazing.
I was Happier Abroad for a while but Covid killed that off.

Have to agree with xiongmao about KL. I've been to KL a few times as well and the Malaysian-Chinese ladies are very nice there. They seem to have all the nice things you like about Chinese women, with a lot fewer of the things that you don't like about Chinese ladies - less materialistic, less rude/angry, and less aloof for instance. Very clean and multicultural as well without being as expensive as Singapore.

I saw many more attractive women in Singapore than I saw in Hong Kong. That said, I lived in Singapore while I only spent a week in Hong Kong. Even so, I saw attractive women EVERY DAY in Singapore.

I am not sure where people are getting that there is a shortage of men in Singapore. Singaporean women flock to those on Expat packages, leaving their Singaporean men alone. That is why Singaporean men complain about it so much and often import women from other countries. Singaporean men have nothing good to say about their women. I have seen reports saying that Singaporean women are the worst in Asia. They aren't talking about how they look physically (they are often very attractive). The 3c's is very well known in Singapore. Singaporean women like to shop more than any woman I've ever seen. If you have a credit card, condo and car...you are SET. These things (especially if you have a car) are the ultimate signs of status and wealth.

I liked living in Singapore...I really did. I'd move back in a second if I could manage it. It is very clean and there is plenty to do and see. It's the perfect spot to launch yourself to other countries in Asia as well. However, I have heard Expats say that Hong Kong is better for Expats overall than Singapore. Perhaps because it is bigger with more to see? I really don't know, but if you make that move to Singapore...please let us know what you think about the comparison.

I haven't been to Malaysia (should have gone as it was so close to Singapore). There are obviously plenty of Malaysians in Singapore. There is more crime there, by far, than in Singapore (mostly theft). It is much less expensive to live there and there are some similarities. Malaysian women are definitely westernized though, perhaps even more than Singaporean women. Malaysian men are often more manly than Singaporean men...and often more dangerous.

Singapore folks like to exaggerate the crime problem in Malaysia. Yes, crime rate is higher there, but SG natives would like you to think that there's a gang of knife wielding thugs behind every dark alley in JB.

This is true. However, I have friends that went to Malaysia and had cell phones forcibly stolen by guys on motorcycles. This is evidently extremely common in Malaysia. They also witnessed a couple of white model guys being beat up very badly at a nightclub...blood everywhere. The Malaysians rallied and supported those that were beating them up...no one offered help to the foreigners. One guy in particular was likely permanently damaged before police showed up. The white guys evidently were making out with some Muslim Malaysian girls and several guys decided they REALLY didn't like it.

I just recommend that foreign men be VERY careful not to step over any boundaries...especially religious ones. Malaysian men are not pussies...they WILL attack violently when provoked. Singaporean men often come off as weak/timid, but the same can't be said for many Malaysian men.
