I'm yet to meet a woman who can go past the second paragraph of that. I wish you could discuss things logically and philosophically in an extended manner like this.
Lol I would instead resume it to:

-Don't live to work honey, life is too short.
-I'm planning on getting an apartment soon, I'm overhauling my business for this. [where "soon" means eventually but not a fixed time lol]
-Wanna hang out?

Or break down the whole thing in several parts letting her respond to each.
1)Too much of one thing defeats the purpose.
2)Everybody is full of it. What's your hypocrisy?

Lol for looking for a laid back girl in Sz (or indeed China). You should come here to Barcelona for one of those.

Yesterday I talked to my first Chinese gf. She's now in the USA with a rich husband. Learn from what she wants:

She is now financially secure.
She can afford to look after her parents who are still back in China.
At some point her parents will go to live in the USA (leaving China is an aspiration for so many Chinese).
She has secured a good future for her baby.
She is finding it hard to learn English and her new life is dull at times but she is willing to overlook this for the greater good.

Chinese families play a long term strategic games. For example, I'm now teaching at a language school where many Chinese students are learning Spanish. They're primarily learning Spanish because their family already has enough English speakers. Now that's strategic.

Notice the word "families" - it's VERY important.

Have you thought about getting a mistress, maybe a part time one? I did get a few approaches for this arrangement when I was in Thailand.

BTW, Chinese career ladies DO at some point regret working so much. But that doesn't happen until the age of 36 (much as it does back in the West).
In February 2013 I quit my boring job and now I'm Happier Abroad...

"Winnie honey,
You don't seem to understand my priorities. I don't need a job or apartment to be happy. That will not fulfill my heart. I need love and a passionate emotional relationship. That's what my heart needs. The stuff you talk about is trivial and can be obtained any time. It's not what my heart needs now. You don't seem to understand that.

We seem to be at a catch 22, or an impasse, in that you won't take me seriously unless i settle down with an apartment. However, I have no motivation to settle down unless i have a real relationship. You see what I mean? It's an impasse and catch 22. Lol.

Also you are so busy with work everyday. You have little time for me and us. You spend most of your time trying to help make your boss and employer rich.

You know, we are getting older each day. We are not young anymore. Each day that goes by in loneliness without love is wasted and gone forever. Do you realize that?

Did you know that people on their death bed about to die, NEVER say that they wished they had worked more or spent more time working at the office? They always say they wished they had given more love to others and their family. This is common knowledge. So why then do chinese people not think about this?

Ask yourself this: what's the point of making a living if all you do is make a living? In that case you have no life to make a living for and you are just a robotic slave who lives for others and not for yourself. It's an internal self contradiction. Think about it.

It's not true that this is how life has to be. In Europe people work less and play more and have more fun each day. It's their philosophy and mentality. So its not true that you have to become a workaholic to survive. It's just that chinese people believe that work is the only real purpose in life, because society tells them so. Whatever society says must be true, because for most people, truth is what's popular, not what's actually true. That's what most people believe and thats why it's so easy for the ruling elite to control people and condition them.

Think about these things. Try to put yourself in my shoes. Look at the big picture and larger deeper perspective. Hope you understand my meaning above."

Winston, know your audience, put yourself in other people's shoes.

It takes a certain kind of Asian girl to be able and patient enough to comprehend a letter like that. They tend to be intellectual independent thinker types and typically are much brighter than the average in their country. Personally, I am drawn to such personalities. They do exist in Philippines, China, and even Taiwan but are just a minority subset.

So the first thing you have to ask yourself, is this girl a member of that subset? If she's not, you might as well preach to a wall. Cus she just won't really get it even if she understands your stance logically. She won't be able to feel your heart in this if she's just a robotic conformist. It's hard to wake people up when they are well into adulthood. Sometimes the wake up on their own as they reach middle age. But it's really something that you probably won't be able to convince them of on your own.

Now even if she is one of those free thinking cerebral types, you likely have an additional communication barrier - language. This is one key advantage Philippines and to a lessor extent Taiwan has over China. Intellectuals in the second and sometimes in the third are often very fluent in English.

If she's one of the exceptional free spirited types of Chinese girls, she still may very likely not be good at English. So perhaps your letter would have been more effective if you had expressed your ideas in simple written Chinese with the help of a friend there in Shenzhen.

Update:

Well it looks like that Winnie girl I referred to above is serious about me. She says if things work out, we can move in together. However she is kind of homely looking, though doable. So I'm not sure how long I could keep an interest in her. She is kind and sincere though. So I'm not sure if I should pursue this or not.

What's funny is that she thinks I'm an international spy because she can't comprehend what my mysterious online income is about. Lol. She thinks I'm some kind of 007. Lol.

Also, Ethan_sg just went on a date with a tall hot girl that looks like a model. After the date she came over to his apartment and he ended up scoring with her, on the first date! Dang. That's like at least the third hot girl he's scored with here.

How come that never happens to me no matter how hard I try? Even if a girl likes me she will just hold hands and cuddle. She will avoid sex with me or make excuses not to have it. Why am I so unlucky in sex? Am I the only guy who cant get laid the normal way? It seems I can only get sex within a serious relationship. Never casually. The sex gods must be against me.

Also earlier while we were walking around in the city, a mamasan approached us. She said she had girls we could have for 150 rmb, which is like 24 dollars. It was hard to believe because the outcall escort agencies here quoted me 600 rmb when i called them.

We went up and I ended up picking a girl who was not bad looking. However she was in a rush and impatient. She kept complaining that I was too heavy when i was on top. Then when she was on top she complained I was taking too long. After 15 or 20 minutes she asked for another 100 rmb to continue. Damn what a hustler. Since 100 rmb was only 16 dollars, I gave it to her and she became even less patient. What a bad attitude. But at least it's good to know that p4p still exists around here. I also enjoyed her smooth white skin and body, which I was rubbing to my hearts delight.

2. Looks like Moonlight Bunny Ranch 2 - Shenzhen Edition. Did you find out the owners name so you can start up an online campaign against him like you did with Dennis Hof hahaha?

Re: Winston is in China now! Updates and Reports

Postby Winston » Sat Apr 11, 2015 1:39 am

This is the last message I got from Summer, the girl who did a 180 on me. It shows her true colors and a warped mentality.

" I don't think we can to be friends,if you want a girl friend, tell you truth, you need spend much money to her, when I stay with you,you let me feel uncomfortable, like when we go to movie,I want buy water and popcorn, you don't want, when I ask you to but star buck for me,you don't buy yourself, you just want share mine, you are so mean,I really don't like that, all time I feel you try to save money, you gave me the gift, all gifts is very cheap,I really don't enjoy ,I think Chinese man much better than you

Sorry to say that, but that is true,if you just want spend a little money than you want find woman or girl friend, that is impossible,I just try to let you know"

My logical response to her:

" I did buy popcorn for you when we first went to movie remember? But you didn't eat it. Only I did. So I think you don't like popcorn.

You didn't say you wanted popcorn last time. You don't communicate clearly. I told you I don't like sweet popcorn so I didn't buy it. If you wanted it you could've asked me. But you were silent and moody.

Chinese are not generous. They like to save money. It's is chinese character. You know that.

Anyway if you really like or love someone, these little things don't matter.

I was going to buy you more expensive gifts on our third date. But you began to be cold and moody to me.

Money does not help or hurt attraction. A relationship is all about chemistry. I've gone on many dates and money never helped me. I've spent a lot of money on girls before and it did not help or change their feeling. Remember I have more experience than you."

" You always lie and trick me. You said we could be friends but now you say we can't. You always change what you say. That's not honest or stable.

I was a gentlemen to you. I paid for most things on our dates. So I did the right thing according to traditional culture."

" You sound like you hate me. Why? You are using little things against me. Only someone with a subconscious hatred problem would do that. You forget all the good things about us and only remember little faults. Strange.

I didn't want Starbucks because Starbucks Coffee is a bad value and not worth the price. 30 rmb can buy dinner and is worth far more than a cup of sugar coffee. So I do not buy coffee there. It's illogical and a bad deal. But it's nothing against you.

I just wanted to taste your coffee. Not drink it. I thought we were a couple. Couples can share drinks. It's normal."

" You are spinning and twisting things and exaggerating things and not making any sense.

You can ask my friend rock if I did anything wrong. He will be honest and not take my side if I am wrong."

" You don't have to spend a lot of money to make a girl like you. Most people would disagree. I have more experience in dating than you. You should listen to me. A man is not required to buy everything a woman wants.

Are you saying a man should never say that something is too expensive? Are you crazy? You sound like a Russian woman. Not a Chinese woman. Chinese women are frugal and love to save and hate ripoff prices. We both know that. I am chinese too."

" You can ask any wise or smart person. They will tell you that a man should NOT give a woman expensive gifts on first or second date. To do so would be stupid and foolish. Everyone knows this summer. Why don't you?"

ethan_sg wrote:Celery2010,

Many people know that most overseas Chinese, especially those in developed countries, look down on mainland China and have a superiority complex towards them. Being a Happierabroader, my views unsurprisingly go against the status quo. Therefore my views do not represent those of the average Singaporean regarding mainland China. The fact that you seem unaware of this seems to add less credibility to your views on Asia.

Also, I doubt you speak any Mandarin at all, or even if you do, it is at best rudimentary, and heavily restricts the type of Chinese woman you have been able to have a genuine interaction with in China, since as anyone who's been to China knows, the average standard of English is still very low. Overseas Chinese including Singaporeans who speak Chinese and are able to look at China without the typical overseas Chinese prejudice against it are therefore able to immerse themselves far more in Chinese city and interact with far more Chinese women than an average westerner is (with the exception of westerners like Rock, who is able to speak fluent Mandarin).

My dating experiences in Shenzhen have so far been very positive. In my first couple of weeks here, I had already hooked up with my first fling in Shenzhen who I then went on a holiday to Xiamen with during the Chinese New Year holiday. While it was only a fling, like most other Chinese girls I have gotten intimate with, whether in Shanghai, Shenzhen or Guangzhou, she was pretty and college educated yet down to earth and nowhere near as materialistic as women I had previously met in Singapore or other developed Asian cities.

Most other girls I've dated since here in Shenzhen have given me a similar impression as well. While I don't by any means think that Shenzhen could possibly be the best place to date women in China, I believe that factors such as demographics and the living situations of the women tend to play a role as well. It's easy to say to Winston to go to some far off unknown city in China - but while indeed the women may be even friendlier there, keep in mind that Winston only speaks very basic Mandarin - how many girls in these types of cities will be able to speak much English? While there will be a handful who can, how likely is Winston to come into contact with them by random cold approaching on the streets? Practical considerations come into play as well.

While Winston and I will probably go traveling around to explore other cities at some point (I've been to Chengdu twice for instance, and quite like it), my experiences so far tell me that Shenzhen is nowhere near as bad as you make it out to be - personally I've so far found the dating scene here comparable to both Shanghai and Guangzhou - diverse with girls from all over China and yet still mostly down-to-earth compared to places like Singapore, Hong Kong or Tokyo. It's all a matter of degree. Go too far to the other extreme and look for girls in unknown 5th tier cities and yes maybe the girls will be even friendlier, but maybe they will completely lack any level of refinement or sophistication, or maybe they will be so conservative that they will only consider sex after marriage. There are potential risks and downsides too. Not sure how small or large your sample size of dates were in Shenzhen, and even how representative a sample size they were given your status as a passing foreigner who probably speaks little Mandarin, but there is no doubt that my experiences, and to a growing extent, Winston's as well, have been different from yours, and one begins to wonder if you are over-generalizing based on a couple of bad eggs you fleetingly met in Shenzhen. My point isn't that Shenzhen is the best place to date girls in China - given the sheer number of cities in China it is very unlikely to be - but it certainly doesn't seem anywhere near as bad as you the picture you paint.

And by the way QQ is getting kinda out of date in China now - the real social networking app to use now is WeChat - which is again a great way to meet new girls in China. The fact that you are telling Winston to get on QQ also adds less credibility to your views. Also, it seems contradictory that you are encouraging getting on social networking sites but at the same time putting down dating sites - in China they are essentially one and the same thing. In fact Chinese social networking sites are so mainstream in China and there are so many people using them that you almost never see the same profile twice when you use a site over a period of time. It has become a mainstream way to meet new friends and potential new dates. Unfortunately most of these sites are only in Mandarin so it's not really an option for many foreigners out there.

I don't doubt that your experiences have been quite positive in Shenzhen, especially in comparing with Sg.

However, Winston is very different from you or your average asian/overseas asian.

1. He does not have much money
2. He prefers a more laid back, non career oriented woman
3. Winston is older and not exactly a "Casanova" type
4. Winston is a "renaissance" man who prefers to have lots of free time to ponder things and enjoy things.
5. Winston has a very bad tendency to stay in one place, not be adventurous and complain about it incessantly

Let's review:
1. Shenzhen is the most expensive city in China
2. Shenzhen is the most career oriented city in China.
3. A lot of the women he has met in Shenzhen want a house, marriage, etc, an attractive foreigner, etc

I am not saying that Shenzhen is bad for all people or even for Winston.

Just that China is a huge place that he should try to explore (at least a bit) before settling down in one place. I've been telling him to go to China since 2012. He first started in HK. Now he's only made it across the border. Just fearing that he'll get stuck there, complain incessantly about the career oriented girls, how they all want houses, how people are robotic and always working, etc, etc, etc........

and start to complain about Mainland China in general before even exploring the place...

Winston speaks at least low intermediate Mandarin, which will improve over time.

There are many other places where people can speak English, China is a big place. You speak as if Shenzhen is the only "civilized" place in China.

Finally, Winston says:

Also, Ethan_sg just went on a date with a tall hot girl that looks like a model. After the date she came over to his apartment and he ended up scoring with her, on the first date! Dang. That's like at least the third hot girl he's scored with here.

How come that never happens to me no matter how hard I try? Even if a girl likes me she will just hold hands and cuddle.

This means that Winston needs more of an advantage. In Winston's situation (not for other people), i would highly recommend that he try a place that is not the most expensive and most career oriented place in China and more fitted to his personality.

It sounds like Winston would prefer a place where the people are more laid back, there are more people from all over China, reasonably cosmopolitan, lots to see and do, cheaper, friendlier girls who are less demanding in wanting a house or spend all their time at their job.

And China is a definitely big place, no need to limit yourself to Shenzhen, which was known as an SEZ (special economic zone) for decades, much in the way Hong Kong was.

Again this shows how different you and Winston are. Xiamen is a fashionable destination filled with beautiful and trendy women. And Winston isn't the type of guy to meet women and take them on vacation for a exotic getaway or a fling.

I'd imagine Winston would tend to get (and prefer) a slight different type of girl; not a typical high maintenance pretty girl who wants a fashionable foreigner with a good income.

I'd imagine Winston would prefer a more laid back, and genuine type girl who is less demanding financially. In my opinion, you'd have a better chance to meet this type of girl in another part of China.

Celery2010,
Hold on a minute. I have a good size savings saved up. I have a decent income now. So I am pretty well off. My income is considered above average in China. I make more than the typical office lady here. Incomes in China aren't that high. So its not about the money.

Who said I don't like to take women on exotic getaways or flings? Of course I do. We all do. I love traveling with women too. Where do you get that?

Ethan is frugal too and does not overspend on women. Yet his dating experiences are much more positive and he gets laid. How do you explain that? Maybe modern girls just like his look more since he is taller and thinner and can pass for a metrosexual type. Whereas im more of a simple old fashioned type.

How you know my mandarin is low intermediate level? Have we met before?

Shenzhen is not the most expensive city in China. Shanghai is. I pay only 20 dollars a night here for a hotel. And meals are like 3 dollars.

But you are right in that there is no sense in limiting myself to Shenzhen and not going to other chinese cities. I am going to Guangzhou in a few days and maybe to Zhu Hai later to meet up with my friend Walt Goodridge.

Shenzhen is about 20% more expensive than Guangzhou if the prices of 7-11 stuff is a good guide. Over the month that would really add up.

Zhuhai was a bit boring when I went there but it is impressive if only to see the full extent of the China property boom/bubble. Oh, and there's a really lovely Yunnan restaurant quite near the border crossing, it's at the top floor of a small shopping arcade. I had some awesome jiaozi there. Well see if you can send Walt out to find it!!!

I'm starting to infiltrate the Chinese community here by chatting to random women on Wechat. I talked to an older woman from Xi'an, but I guess she was married or thought I wouldn't be interested. Now I'm talking to a girl from Inner Mongolia. Have you thought about offering free Chinese lessons? While you might not necessarily want to date your students, it's a good way of getting a social circle going.

I did really well dating in China although I guess I was the right age to date desperate 30 somethings who want a man in their life. Speaking the language doesn't really matter, it's just being alpha enough to talk to girls, and being able to brush off rejection. My friend in Gz spoke terrible Mandarin, yet he was meeting girls everywhere.

Slightly off topic, can anyone recommend a general dating site that we can use in any country? I just logged into OKCupid in Spain and it's full of princess types (i.e. they write scary long lists of exactly what you need i.e. money, hair, muscles lol). Should I pay for a Match.com subscription? Is eHarmony better? I'll keep going with Wechat though, the trick is to use the look around function every day, it seems to boost your visibility.

Anyway Winston, keep plugging away. Keep in mind I was in China for 4 months but I only really met 4 girls who were 2nd date material. And of those 1 hated me (personality clash), 1 was a princess and 2 were good but they lived in Sz so it was a hassle to go and see them.
In February 2013 I quit my boring job and now I'm Happier Abroad...

You know, it's funny you said that. I used my IChing divination app on my smart phone to do readings for me and China. The readings were mixed, but several of the readings mentioned this:

"The advantage will be found in the SW region"

So it's funny that you mention that too. What a coincidence. The IChing app has been amazingly accurate. I often get the exact same readings and hexagrams from different IChing apps after I ask the SAME question, which cannot be coincidence! So there is something to it. Chinese Emperors have used IChing for hundreds of years, to help find guidance in decisions, so they wouldn't do that if there wasn't anything to it.

You can get it from Google Play Store. There are a number of them and they all seem very accurate most of the time.

What is special about SW China? Is it because like the USA, people on the coastline are more snobby and materialistic and those inland are more down to earth?

I've been to SW China once (Guangxi). My impressions - it's more impoverished, more cut-off from central China and Beijing government, more ethnic minorities, shorter people on average (tho Guangdong people in general are not tall too) and because of those traits, perhaps more down to earth though I'm not 100% sure on that. Falcon has spent time in that area and can elaborate more.

Update:

I was going to Guangzhou today. But I've been sick the past week and it's still not recovered. One night after going out with Ethan to test the distance from the metro station to this hotel deal that my friend told me about, I got sick because it was cold and raining and I went out without a jacket because Western science told me that you can't get sick from the cold alone. So much for Western science.

I ended up getting a fever the very next day, which has come and gone, but keeps recurring. The worst part of it is that my fevers come with this weird migraine where it feels like needles are poking the back of my head. WTF is that? How come other people with the fever or flu never get that? It hurts so much that it brings tears to me and I keep yelling out "OUCH! STOP IT! COME ON! STOP IT!" The needles in the back of my head poke me intermittently and cause me a lot of pain and suffering. If only I hadn't gone out that night with Ethan. It's stupid how one little thing can cause so much pain and suffering. And if only that woman I'm seeing here hadn't tried to set me up with a hotel deal to try to get me to stay long term in Shenzhen when I have no reason to yet. She's trying to control my life and that backfires. I got some antibiotics at the drug store, per that woman's suggestion, but they don't seem to help much.

I have a question. When you have a fever, your body is fighting some kind of infection right? So is it better not to take pain medicine like Advil for it? Is it better to let the fever play out and run its course? American medicine likes to suppress symptoms. But is it wise to do that in this case? Either way, I sometimes have to take Advil because the migraines in the back of my head are too painful to bear. I used to take Tylenol, but it no longer works for me, perhaps because I used it too much for too many years.

I'm so weak now from the fever that I'm not sure how much walking around I can do.

So you see, when I try to leave Shenzhen, Murphy's Law blocks me. Again, f**k Murphy's Law to hell! Maybe now you guys will believe me when I say that a force called Murphy's Law constantly blocks me and victimizes me. My whole life is always about being BLOCKED BLOCKED BLOCKED! I'm so f***ing tired of being BLOCKED BLOCKED BLOCKED!

i'm no expert like house MD, but I understand suppressing the symptoms within reason helps you rest, allowing other 'unrelated' functions to work better.
For example, pain is just there to warn you that something is wrong and make sure you stop and lay down; but if it's bad enough you won't be able to rest, making it harder for your system to fight the infection. A runny nose might be more necessary than pain to fight the attackers, but suppressing it slightly might let you sleep better too.
I usually try to avoid over the counter stuff unless i really have to, especially to sleep when i have a cold.

2)Everybody is full of it. What's your hypocrisy?

Yeah that's one of the hazards of living in China. I got a horrible norovirus thing when I lived in Gz, but other than that unpleasant episode I had an uneasy stomach the whole time I was there. It cleared up within 24 hours of landing in Bangkok.

The good news is that living in China strengthens your stomach and I never really got sick in Thailand, even after eating in a restaurant Falcon took me to where the cat was drinking out of the washing up bowl (the food was awesome though!). This is also the first time I've visited Spain and not got sick.

Chinese people fear cold things and in Hubei I could never get a cold beer. You'll hear about kids eating ice creams then getting a cold. Also some kids get too hot - have you seen them with those weird pads on their foreheads? It's all about your yin and yang I think.

If you have a fever you'll ache a lot so you need to rest. Make sure you drink plenty of water. Miso soup is also good, or that black chicken soup if you can find it. In the South of China you should make sure you have plenty of soup, and less dry food.

By the way, if you want a new way of meeting people I got tipped off about meetup.com. I just had a look and there's loads going on in Guangzhou (or any city for that matter). It looks like a good way to grow your social network. Joining a language school is another good way - I know a load of people from my Barcelona school now.

To elaborate more on Rock's post, I dated one Guangxi girl while I was in Gz. She was quite tall, very attractive and the only ethnic minority I ever dated while I was in China. She was the first person in her family to leave the land and get a city job, I was proud of her for her achievements - her English was also very good.

On the downside, she still had much to learn, like she insisted we buy towels even though every single hotel in the world already has towels in the rooms.

By the way, if anyone wants to improve their Chinese I've just started using Memrise. It's just what I need to smash that vocabulary into long term memory. I know my tones are terrible, but if I could learn the Chinesepod 1000 words then I could have some terrific conversations on wechat.
In February 2013 I quit my boring job and now I'm Happier Abroad...
