Lot's of misinformation here. As one who actually studied government and worked in various branches of the government, this is what I would add.

- Anyone who has studied government knows that the USA is not a democracy, it is a republic, or as some would say, a representative democracy. Politicians and journalists like to claim that we live in a democracy, but that is part demagoguery and part ignorance. Our Constitution specifically requires that people elect representatives to rule the nation as a protection against the tyranny of the majority.

- Yes, most nations are ruled either directly or indirectly by elites. The United States included but this is not by design, but by consequence of tradition, wealth, and influence. Since political power in, in part, flows from wealthy political contributors like corporations, wealthy individuals, and powerful fundraisers, these can be said to be elites and members of the Oligarchy. But the oligarchy also includes powerful journalists, publishers, academics, and others who are low profile.

- The federal and state government officials do sometimes do the bidding of the elites who help put then there, but these officials and the bureaucrats actually have the day to day power of government, not "the elites." But, sometimes elites become government officials (Clintons, Bushes, Obamas) so that is where the power of the elites become supercharged.

- International elites do meet at exclusive organizations like The Bilderberg Meeting, The Council on Foreign Relations, etc., but these are not to plot conspiracies, but to discuss and coordinate policies to support back home.

- Yes, there is a set of leftist or progressive elites to support a globalist agenda. People like George Soros, Mark Zuckerberg, and others do seek to finish the job of pushing for more centralized alliances like the EU. However, there is considerable pushback from other elites who resist these monumental changes.

Politics tends to be a clash of the interests of power elites. Whichever side can mobilize their political bases better, can take control of executive and legislative positions. But they are primarily working to advance the policy agendas of the elites who put them in power.

Trump was a bit of an anomaly because he was not funded nor controlled by elites, but his administration and his bureaucracy is full of people undermining him and doing the bidding of entrenched elites and that is what he means by draining the swamp. But to get his agenda implemented, Trump has to make deals with conservative elites in Congress so he is not in the free and clear.

But I ask people to quit thinking there are nefarious elements hunkered down to rule us like puppets. There are secretive elements of elites in intelligence organizations as we have been seeing in the news, but these elites are fighting for the leftist agenda while Trump is fighting for the rightist agenda with less of his people in place.

Obama's 8 years saw a massive turnover in terms of replaced bureaucrats so Trump needs years to undue what Obama still has in place. This is part of the checks and balances the framers of the Constitution wanted to see.
