You are correct! Creating a portable income IS the way of the future. It is the ideal situation.

There are several links in the FAQ post about this, scroll down to 5b of the FAQ post:

It's a lot of work, but with the potential to make money, and it being something I love, it would be great for me. I have heard of people writing pamplets and technical information, etc., but I really would like to write books and stories. What is my potential for money here if I, for example, wrote one ebook a year, and let Amazon sell it? This is the thing I am most interested in.
The best link about this is a post by Phoenix Sosa:

"Freelance/Work-at-Home Jobs (Online)"
viewtopic.php?t=10810

You should ask Phoenix about this since he is making $3,000 a month online. Imagine that, being able to live anywhere in the world, even places where rent for a decent apartment is only $150 or so a month, and making $3,000 a month.

Also, check out these sites:

If you are skilled at computer programming, you can often make money by writing computer programs using the odesk or vworker sites. Do you know any computer programming languages?

As I know, there are the primary ways one can make money online:

1. Provide a product or service that people are willing to pay for. (e.g. Ebay.com, Amazon.com, etc.)
2. Serve as an online middle man and outsource work to others, earning commissions from the deals made and services rendered.
3. Provide good web content that draws significant steady traffic - by generating content on a website, blog or forum (a public platform where others can generate content for you), and using backlinks, optimized key words for SEO (search engine optimization), advertising and cross-promotions to build up your traffic. Then earn advertising revenue and affiliate commissions from that traffic, and product/service sales as well. (that's what I do)
4. Do freelance work for others, such as freelance writing, editing, video editing, programming, etc. on a contractual basis.
5. Provide some kind of personal service, such as consulting, teaching English to foreign students via Skype, etc.

See these search results for "How to make money online".

Here are some good links I've found:

http://www.thewebmoneyworld.com

http://www.moneyonline.net

http://www.blogstash.com/53-ways-to-make-money-online/

http://www.101waystomakemoney.com

http://www.smartpassiveincome.com

I personally recommend this Passionpreneur guy I know who teaches people how to turn their "passion into profit". His books have a lot of awesome valuable advice in teaching you how to find resourceful ways of doing what you love and making a living from it. His name is Walt Goodridge. See his site here:

http://www.passionprofit.com

You can also make money online from anywhere in the world as a freelancer. If you have any programming skills, web design skills, or just good solid writing skills, you can put them to use as a freelancer. And if you're good, the client may request more of your services on an ongoing basis. Here are a list of sites that offer jobs for freelancers.

http://www.freelancer.com

http://www.elance.com

http://www.guru.com

http://www.directfreelance.com

http://www.demandstudios.com

http://www.odesk.com

http://www.essaybay.com

As of now, you can even make money teaching English online! For example:

http://www.verbalplanet.com/teach-english.asp

Remember that where there's a will, there's a way.

If you want to know, this site makes money from a variety of advertising sponsorships, paid links, pay per click ads (CPM and CPC), affiliate sales commissions, and ebook sales.

But keep in mind though, unless you get some good steady freelancing contracts, making money online starts out slowly. You make very little at first. You have to grow it gradually with quality work.

Hi Ghost,

I'm a computer programmer. I first got a job building a database system for a company. I suggested to my manager that I would be able to do almost all of my work from home using log me in. I offered to take a pay cut in exchange for the ability to work from home so I wouldn't have to sit in traffic. He agreed to give it a try temporarily. I made sure to work very hard and not slack off. Although I was working at home, I made sure to treat the job the same as an office job. I even had a web cam set up so my boss could see that I wasn't slacking off and so I would be under pressure to keep my work quality up. So far, this arrangement has worked well.

Now I haven't told him yet that I will be moving overseas. I'm not quite sure that he will let me do so yet. However, I rarely come to the office and I have proven that I can be a dependable employee even working from home. So I think there is a good chance that, when I tell him I want to move overseas, he may let me.

I think that this is the best way to get online work. Just get a regular job, except one where most or almost all your work is done on a computer. Then prove to your boss that you can do all the work using log me in. That way, you will get an American level wage or salary while living in a country with a much lower cost of living.

You might have to offer a substantial pay cut to make that option attractive. You're basically offering the same thing other companies are doing with programmers in India, which having your job shipped overseas, but with the programmer in India, they can get away with paying a lot less.

If you don't offer substantial value for relocating your job overseas, they may replace you down the road with someone else in another country for cheaper. I don't think you're going to be looking at making your US wage overseas. At least not for long when those brain cells fire off in your boss's head to realize that he has exported his job overseas without the cost benefit of doing so.

Ghost wrote:I have one more question if anyone knows. Is it allowed to monetize multiple blogs done through the same site? The blog I started recently was through blogger.com, and if I started, say, 10, can I monetize all of them? I know the workload would be huge, but I want to make some residual income that I actually notice.
Of course you can. Didn't you see in the blogger template, that you can easily integrate Adsense with just a few clicks? Go to the template layout and try to add something to the sidebars and you will see the function. It's set up to be easy and quick. Adsense will pay for banner views (CPM ads) and clicks (CPC ads). Other ad services that I use are:

http://www.text-link-ads.com
http://www.linkworth.com
http://www.contextweb.com
http://www.infolinks.com

But your site has to qualify for those. You got to build up decent traffic first, before those sites will accept you. For now though, you can put up Adsense. It's all about content. Blogger has great SEO so you don't need to worry about that.

There are pros and cons with using Blogger though. There are many online article about this. You can do some research to understand them. There are a few drawbacks to using platform blogging services. The host can pull your blog down at any time without warning, for example. You should back up all your blogs. There is a function in the admin panel that lets you do that easily.

Overall, it's better to have your own domain name and hosting company. It looks more professional that way.

You can look at my blog on Blogger for an example of how to lay out the ads and monetize the blog. I don't update my blog much though.

Residual income...

Post by polya »

AMWAY was real big in the 1980s as a way to make residual income, it failed for 99% of people. Most schemes will have similar chance of success. Certainly, thinking you'll make enough money to have a playboy lifestyle, travelling the world in your first year is virtually impossible. If you can't get a well paid job in your new country, you'll be better off staying home & only going on "sex-tour" holidays...

Check out this site about smart passive online income by Pat Flynn. You might find it helpful and learn something from it.

http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/passive-income-101/

I love how it explains that when you work, you trade your time for dollars. But when you invest your time into an online business, the business WORKS FOR YOU, not you for it. That's an excellent way to put it.

Here is an image from his site that defines what passive income is.

Image

And here is a video where he explains the passive income business model.

If you guys are interested, check out his articles, videos and podcasts at the link above to learn more.

Hope that helps some of you out in establishing a passive online income to free up your time to go overseas. Remember, the trick is to make the business work for you, not you for it.

Ghost wrote:You do have a good layout with your blog. I now have 3 blogger.com blogs, but am currently only updating one. I have decided not to continue with the first one I started since it is too general. One of the first things I've learned is be specific with a blog instead of general, and write about things that appear in the news to draw readers and traffic. I've already learned a lot, picking up lots of tips and tricks along the way. Always more to learn, but it's fun! I have also collected many sites by now for various ways to make some income online, including writing, surveys, etc. So once I start up these projects and find the right balance, it should just be a matter of persevering until it works.
(I've made 1 cent on my blog(s) so far, so I have a bit more persevering to go. :D)

The blog I am currently writing is http://www.darkageofmisandry.blogspot.com

(I think the layout may be too bland, but it appeals to me at least. If anyone wants to give me feedback, even if it's just to say it sucks, feel free. My ears are open. :D)

And thanks again all for all the tips!
You got the layout of the blog right. However, I wouldn't put the Amazon search box and context ad in the top right corner of the blog. That's a big mistake. First, Amazon blocks don't pay shit. They are CPA (cost per action) ads and only pay a tiny percentage of purchases made through there. It's hard to even make $10 from that. I tried it and it was totally pointless and generated nothing. I would suggest that you put the subscribe button in the top right corner followed by the blog archive links, and then right under that put an Adsense sidebar, either the 120 x 90 or 160 x 90 format. You already got two Adsense rectangle ads under two posts. That's good, putting it within the content. But you can only have three Adsense ads per page, so I'd put the third one as a sidebar on the right, under the subscribe button and archive links. That would be a much better format.

Under the Adsense ads, you can put some foreign women dating block ads, like the ones I have on the index page of this forum. To use those, you sign up as an affiliate for dating sites and then use the code for their banners in that space. For example, you can sign up with these:

http://www.loveme.com
http://www.owndating.com
http://www.elenasmodels.com

Those have affiliate programs and co-brand sites that you can use banners and block ads to promote, with ladies' pictures. They pay good commissions for people who become paying members of those sites, or join romance tours.

It's better to have your own domain name too. It looks more professional, even if it does redirect to a blog URL. You can get a domain name for $10. It's really cheap.

Then you gotta promote your blog, in various ways. You can learn more about that in the other links, or just Google "how to promote your blog".
Ghost wrote:One more question, if anyone knows. Is it allowed to post the same article on different websites? Like if I start writing for Squidoo, Hubpages, etc., can I post my same content on all of them? It would make sense as someone trying to make money from article writing, but I can see how there would be a conflict of interest.
Yes you can. The only problem is, if someone does a search for it on Google, it will bring up the version on the higher ranking site first. So if you post your article on another site that's higher ranked than yours, then it will show above the one on your site. That's why it's best to put a link to your site under the article, such as "To read more of my articles, go to: URL".

You can post your articles for free on high ranking free article submission sites, such as:

http://ezinearticles.com/
http://www.articlebase.com
http://www.helium.com

Those will get top search results. Then you can put a link in that article to your blog or website. A lot of people do that to promote their site or product or service. They will write a short article about the product or service they are selling, and use a link as a lead in to their site. There are many ways to promote your blog, but that's just one way.

All this takes time to build up though. In the meantime, you can do freelance work to earn cash, through sites like http://www.demandstudios.com and other sites like that.
