Xiongmao Needs a Teaching Job!

Post by xiongmao »

Hi,

Does anyone know of any teaching jobs going anywhere? I'd prefer to teach at University level. Location anywhere, but I know some Mandarin so China is an obvious choice. I have a CELTA but a lack of actual teaching practice.

I've bombed out of yet another IT job, so I guess I have to admit that IT is no country for old men (or women, or anyone over the age of 35 I guess). It's bullshit but at least I have a plan B.

Anyway, I have registered on a couple of sites but it's hard to know what positions are genuine, plus they keep sending me irrelevant stuff. Which is pretty much like the IT job market (which is full of agencies and headhunters). Luckily I have Ms. Wong who I can employ to phone people up and screen out the scammers.

My plan C is to get some teaching experience in the UK. China will take pretty much anyone, but I am sure I would be more valuable if I had actual teaching experience in the UK. My sister's currently a high school teaching assistant, she's enjoying it immensely, apart from the fights and other sh1t that are part of daily life in UK schools :o .
I was Happier Abroad for a while but Covid killed that off.

University in China is great if you want paid flight, loads of free time, no hassles (depends on the university of course), free single accommodation, the money isn't great but more than enough to love comfortably locally and save some (most) of it, there are loads of jobs to choose from, most of them are through recruiters though, you are in time for a March start though so what I would do is send your resume out to as many recruiters as you can and you will find a university job for March, it might not be superb but it will be a start.

Most universities recruit through third parties, you are just going to have to trust them write to as many as you can, ask them for matches to your preferences (part of the country, salary, hours etc).

Your CELTA means shite in China, they don't care about CELTA - and it won't be of any help as you will be teaching classes of 60-100 students without the amenities to teach CELTA style CLT - you are going to have to forget what you have learned in Barcelona because it is going to be of no use to you in China (if that is where you end up).

But I like China and teaching Chinese students, but it took awhile to get there. Good luck, anything you need to know, I am always here to help. :D

Since you have an IT background why don't you teach that? You could probably teach Maths as well, your phd and your professional background could be a big help in getting work in China. Subject teaching is far better paid than English teaching and there's a lot less competition.

How exactly did you become such a loser, if I might ask?

edit: Teaching is also no country for old white men, obviously.

Xiongmao,

How is IT not fit for older people ? I know couple of guys that work in IT. As long as they keep their skills current they are in demand.

If anything teaching overseas as a ESL teacher you will deal with ageism. Maybe in CHina it's little more lax but places like South Korea or to some extent Japan they prefer the young white people. Saying that with teaching experience and maybe genuine teaching certificate can give you an edge in the job market.

This is HA, we're all beta here and most of us live in our parents' basements.

Thanks to the unlimited migration from Europe we're forced to scratch around making a living and live in tiny rooms while the immigrants force up property prices and force down wages. But that's why we voted for Brexit I guess. Back in 1991 I knew an English dude who got his first job in London and he could live in his own flat in Earls Court. Those days are long gone. Most Brits live hand to mouth these days. Adjusted for inflation I earn the same as I did in 2001, but housing costs 1.5 times as much (or more).

As to jobs, I got another IT job offer but I just don't know if I can handle the bullshit anymore. I know teaching will have more bullshit - all career paths have bullshit lol.

Got an interview about a couple of teaching positions on Monday. I know salary isn't great but then it costs me GBP 915 a month just for my room and travel pass living in London - a free apartment in China is very attractive!

Speak for yourself. I'm certainly not one of those losers. I own a very large home fully paid with 3 lounges, big pool, maids, a garage full of bikes, a 4 x4, no debt to jews and lots of assets and money. I enjoy my work as an associate partner in a professional firm. I also get regular sex and can't count number of women Ive pomped without p4p. All white, as I prefer. I'm well within top 1 percent of income earners and could live that shit married life if I wanted. I chooseither not to.

One does not need to be a beta or a loser to be on this site. Some of us have content lives, don't work our lives away, have sex lives with the race of our choice, families and hobbies so don't need the whole woe is me routine.

Absolutely, Xiongmao projects his failures onto others and gets put into his place.

I don't have any of Krademelders material possessions but I am very happy with my life, I love China, I like my work here, I like my time off, I also have sex with the race of my own choice - it just aint my own. 8)

I have a different mindset than most people in my sociology economic class. They would drive audis mercs etc I prefer bikes. They eat out everyday I prefer home cooking. They take fancy holidays. I take bike trips to the bush. Get it? I prefer people who think out of the box and don't buy into what is expected.

There are quite a few on here with alternative views who don't live like they are expected to. And are happy with it. Take Winston as an example. I don't have to be 100 pct like everyone else on here. For example, Winston is against having children. My kids are the best thing I have ever done. Exchanging views with such people is a breath of fresh air compared to dinner with yuppies or a woman focused on status, being seen, and material things. They see it as status, for me they are toys. Bikes are a passion. A large home is about privacy, not status. I can see or hear no neighbours etc. I can do what I please when I please. Having a live in heifer would destroy this and she would want and want.

I basically don't think or want to fit in with my socioeconomic class. Just like many on here.

He doesn't want to learn, he wants an intelligent audience to whom he can vent his hate for blacks and jews and not get banned. Same as Cornfed. Both of them belong at stormfront or other racist sites, but they find the people on those sites repellent, same as I find Krapmelder and Cornfed repellent. Or maybe he wants to feel superior to people with job/money problems like xiongmao.

OK sorry for the beta talk guys but I'm feeling more alpha again. Anyway, what I've found is:

1. I've got a new job offer... I've stumbled onto the fact that Microsoft Excel is a really great niche - much easier than programming and it pays great. Once you're an Excel God then you can go for all kinds of data analyst jobs. There are 1000's of these in London according to Indeed. Unfortunately my Excel sucks but I've got one month to get up to speed. Anyway, check it out numerate guys (and note that a degree is not required for many jobs).

2. It's hard (but not impossible of course) to get a China teaching job without teaching experience. Get experience by the usual route - take on a first job that nobody else wants. So go and teach in the middle of nowhere, or in freezing cold Harbin or something.

3. I am thinking about a new online business, this time something to do with ecommerce and drop shipping. I can build websites and promote them. I have the contacts who can get stuff from Chinese factories. I just need to connect the dots on this and I could be earning $7000 a month. Has anyone else tried drop shipping?

4. While the job situation is meh, my property business is doing great. I worry constantly about money, which is why I have no money worries lol.

A guy with a few irons in the fire like you probably should not go the teaching route. It's funny that English teachers get a hard time for being in a job which allegedly someone with a pulse and English as a native tongue can do, while simultaneously it's quite hard to get into in the big cities. My last job teaching, which was in Taipei, asked for five years experience! Starting off in a third or fourth tier city in the mainland is for a special kind of person I'd say. Harbin would actually be far from the worst place you could end up. Sure it has cold winters, but it's a city with personality - in the North I'd rather be there than Jilin, Shenyang, Changchun etc. Further south, I used to travel to some fourth tier cities around Shanghai - Yixing and Chuzhou, God forbid you end up in one of those places...and there are worse still.

To me Excel is one of the banes of my existence I hate filling out those pointless tables - but good for you if you can hack it. If you have property and internet business going I'm sure you can spend some quality time in China or wherever. If learning the language is your thing - I think travel in the back-blocks is a much faster way to learn than living in a city teaching. When you teach you exhaust your energy to talk and communicate in class for five hours or so every day.
Even Billy knows that, just ask Mr S!

Excel is a great tool. I have written software in it using the visual basic functions. It is great for developing and with columns it is easy to find mistakes compared to programming where you have to keep writing code to write out calculation steps to find errors. After writing in excel pass it on to a programmer to code everything. But end of the day only a programmer with an engineering background can do the work and follow the logic and objective, and still improve on it.

Lookup tables and pivot tables are great for summarizing or extracting data from very large databases.

I have also used it write templates to draw all kind of specialised engineering diagrams.

But I find it only a tool not an end in itself. it helps you a job. A job in excel can never be more than a job like a GIS technician or Autocad technican. One step up from data clerk or secretary. A well paid career is based on solving the problems or doing the designs, not entering data or doing the drawings for such people.

Excel... Meh. It makes money, which can be invested and bring longer term financial independence.

Yeah it sucks that I can't find a teaching job in China while various dorks (present company excepted!) are teaching out there. I mean in my old University there was an Egyptian teaching English, and I don't think any of the other teachers I met had a TEFL. The best teachers there were a retired couple brought over on a scheme to get actual USA professors to teach in Chinese schools.

I have had a bit of interest from Chinese Universities, but while agents are OK, the admin staff at these institutions don't seem to be sending me anything useful.

I'm sure I could do other stuff in China (or anywhere else) but it all comes down to visa issues. You just can't up sticks and live somewhere else (unless you're European moving to another European country etc.)
