Not easy. Look at the number of bids on each job- 150 at times. Big competition. And those in India, Bangladesh and Russia will be happy to work for $30 a pop.WWu777 wrote:Whether you're a computer programmer, web designer, or just a writer, there are freelance jobs for you on these sites where you can make money online!

Make Money Online
There a tons of ways to make money overseas and online. With the power of the internet you have access to billions of people anywhere in the world. Sites like elance.com give you the ability to freelance projects or jobs you are good at and get paid for them.
Or you could create your own blog and earn money that way. smartpassiveincome.com is one great example of blogs or sites online making thousands of dollars every month! Pat Flynn the owner of smartpassiveincome has posts detailing how much money he makes with his blogs and how to create your very own as well.
But the fastest way to make money is to create your own Squeeze page and promote it like crazy. A squeeze page is a specific page on site where you offer a FREE gift in exchange for someone's email. And as we all know, email marketing is one of the most lucrative ways to earn money online. Check out Pay Flynn's site for more info.

LOL we have a thread here about Pat Flynn. You can see it at: viewtopic.php?t=12176ultimajohn wrote:There a tons of ways to make money overseas and online. I would add http://www.peopleperhour.com to this list!!!
Yeah right, look how much Pat makes from sites that don't involve his big inflated ego.
It's brutally hard to make money online.
And as for that spammer mentioning domain names, this isn't a cash cow either. I've just picked up a very lucrative domain for just $10 after the spammers couldn't find anyone who wanted to buy it.

I was Happier Abroad for a while but Covid killed that off.

Re: List of Freelance sites where you can make money online!
I've worked as a photojournalist for many years here in Thailand, most of the time I work where and when I want. I covered the Beijing Olympics, sold photos to HBO, and I can tell you that the above places are tough to make a decent living from. There's a reason why they're called content mills.Winston wrote:Whether you're a computer programmer, web designer, or just a writer, there are freelance jobs for you on these sites where you can make money online! Personally, I won't write for a magazine that pays me less than 25 cents a word, and that's my bare minimum. That's $250 for a thousand words. This takes me a day to write, set down, rewrite, and then give a final edit. I would much rather make $1-$2 a word and do one or two articles a month than 5 articles a day to make $50-$100 a day. I know this is not possible for some people, especially those just starting out, but if you're just starting out as a writer you're probably not going to make enough to live comfortably overseas. If you do plan on doing this, have enough money to last for a year so you have time to build up a body or work.
My point is to be very careful about who you write for because you could find yourself working hours upon hours for next to nothing. Then basically all you've done is wasted time.

It would be great if you could start a thread and tell us exactly how to make a living by being a freelance journalist online. I realize this is like asking a guy who digs ditches for a living to spend a day digging ditches for free, but it would still be a great contribution.anamericaninbangkok wrote:I've worked as a photojournalist for many years here in Thailand, most of the time I work where and when I want. Develop your writing skills. Get someone to pay you. You will figure the rest out for yourself.
Good writing is never easy nor can it be rushed. I always laugh when I hear someone boast they write 4000-5000 words a day. I can write 5000 words a day too but only 500-1000 words will be worth using.
Content mills are a rough racket, believe me. I have considered it and I can never justify it. I would much rather spend my time writing query letters than working for pennies. The payoff is better. Call me lazy but I prefer to write four hours a day than bang out article after article.

I did some work on oDesk, but at $20 an hour I was a little expensive. Especially since guys on there will code for $2 an hour.
Of course what the site won't tell you is that the $20+ an hour guys are making their money fixing code that the $2 guys wrote. Lol.
There are any number of ways of making money abroad. There's a guy I know in China who makes £1000 a month from a career I've never heard of (and don't ask me about it, I'm not giving his niche away!).
Now I do all kinds of stuff. Also I quit the consumerist culture in 2007, and built a warchest of cash to allow me to more or less retire at 40. If you spend nothing then your savings can really build up rapidly.

If you break an article down to an hourly rate, $20 is not really all that much Ghost. For oDesk or Elance it's good money though.Ghost wrote:How did you get hired at $20 an hour Xiongmao? Did you just search for people who paid others peanuts and got monkeys? I just write right now though, and that's a cheaper skill than coding. Much of it depends on what your skillset is in the first place. But the market is open to all and inundated anyway. That's why my goals is about $1000 a month - consistently - completely online. I figure keeping a modest goal and forgoing any notion of getting rich is best. And that is still plenty more than a guy needs to live in a third world country.
The market is inundated with a high percentage of hacks. Anyone with a halfway decent education should be able to write but there is a big difference between writing and writing well.
My own goals in writing are unrelated to earning money. Money is certainly important however my goal is always to put forth an article / book that is entertaining and free of errors. If readers are entertained, the money should come...hopefully.
