Teaching English from South Africa
This is my first post on this forum. I've been researching TEFL teaching jobs in South East Asia. Anyway I live in South Africa and have not decided what country I want to relocate too.
Anyway English is my first language. I already for training and life coaching. So I want to know how I can teach English via Skype/online to supplement my income. Most of the people above mentioned they live in Philippines and surrounding countries.
Thanks for your very useful advice.

Re: Teaching English online to support yourself
There are many advantages while working online. But since you wish to raise the income so I am just suggesting you. You know there are many specialist tutoring companies who provides tutor online. So try to contact with one of such learning center and get work from them.ladislav wrote:After 19 years of trying to figure out how to make a living while in the Philippines, there has finally been a breakthrough. I have been making $800-1200 a month teaching ESL online. This is enough to make a living here and even support a family if you live thriftily and do not want multiple girlfriends and dates which is very tempting for anyone who appreciates new horizons in every area.
I am a tough guy but on the month that I made $1167 online I was beside myself with joy- I could not believe I was finally able to accomplish that on my own. Anyway, there are schools in Russia and China that constantly need teachers. The problem is the relatively low pay but you can live very well in the Philippines for that money. You can have as many students as you want and can handle. The Chinese pay $6 per hour, the Russians- $10.
Because it is online, you can live anywhere in the country you wish and they pay you by Paypal. You just need a decent WI FI and Skype.
I will provide details upon request and send you names of schools.

Re: Teaching English online to support yourself
Hi there
Has anyone ever been to Turkey?
Hi there
I have visited Turkey numerous times over the past 10 years and now I'm wondering about moving there. The thing is - I lived as an expat in a few countries (including Egypt, Greece, Italy and Latvia), making a living providing English mentoring (non-native.)
I feel I know Turkey quite well though I am a bit concerned about a few things. Let me list them
1. Would I get by speaking very little Turkish (I speak English, German and Russian though)
2. Is there any market for non-native English mentoring there? (I consideredrelocating to Istanbul or ... got no other ideas!) How about some good language schools? I have worked for http://www.speak-up.com/ in a few countries - anyone heard of them? Any other names you may suggest? How much would I make as an English teacher?
3. Accomodation - where to look for it?
So many questions...As you may see, I'm mostly focused on getting a job but I guess this is a good basis for putting my roots at a certain place.
regards,
Tomek

Yes I tried it and it was terrible. It was just full of people on a free trial looking for someone stupid enough to teach them for free.
I heard the same thing about most of these sites where you teach through an 'app' type thing rather than just normal lessons. Theres another one called 'cambly' and people are just looking for free chat and then leave when they realise there is a charge.
I think the only decent sites are things like verbling and italki, or offering lessons through Skype/in person.

Cornfed,
Why are your posts so negative? If someone wants to get the qualifications and teach English abroad, there is still a demand for it.
Dave's ESL cafe still has job boards up. I decided to click on an ad there to see what they were offering.
This job pays around $3000 a month for a native speaker with a bachelor's degree, though they prefer a degree in early childhood education and some kind of ESL certification. Housing is included. The downside is they give a small reimbursement for airfare after a year's contract, so it is probably not a good match for a poor college graduate who can't afford the ticket. If an expat teacher on the other side could verify that the employer treats employees well, one could risk putting a ticket on a credit card.

But it is one of many jobs on the board there.
$1500 a month teaching English online doesn't sound like a way to make a good living to me. Getting some qualifications and then choosing a higher-paying niche in the field may not be so bad. IMO, the way to do that is to be certified as a teacher in a developed country and go work in some kind of international school position. China, apparently, has lower standards for qualifications when compared to some other countries.
Teaching English on the lower side of the pay scale may be okay for a single young man looking for adventure. It is not the best for a man who gets married and has kids and hopes to go back and see his relatives and friends in his home country from time to time who wants to send his kids to English-speaking schools. Some international schools let their teachers' kids attend for free.
