Put in:
1. The title of that thread
2. A brief description (3 lines or less) and
3. The link to that thread or post
Relevant topics can be any information relevant to being Happier Abroad. Success stories, information
that would help someone choose a country, links to information about different countries, financial
advice to help someone save money to go overseas, find work overseas, or manage investments.
The outline can be expanded (that is, you can add subsections).
However, if you do this make sure that you don't mess up the numbering and lettering of the other threads.

4. THE COUNTRY DATING DIFFICULTY SCORE
-> 4a. EXPLANATION OF THE COUNTRY DATING DIFFICULTY SCORE
The Country Dating Difficulty Score is an attempt to calculate how difficult it would be for a guy to
find a long term girlfriend or wife in the given country provided that he was able to adapt to the
culture, learn the language, and be accepted by the people who live there.
This score is calculated using 4 values:
1. The average height of an adult male.
2. The nominal per capita GDP.
3. The gender ratio (number of males divided by the number of females).
4. The percent of men who applied to Beautifulpeople.com from that country who were accepted. This is used to estimate male facial attractiveness.
Statistics from studies of online dating were used to determine the relative impact of
height, income, the gender ratio, and male facial attractiveness to dating success.
There are 3 things that I discovered from the analysis of online dating statistics that were used
to determine how the Country Dating Difficulty Score was to be calculated:
1. Each doubling of income equals 3 inches of height.
From analyzing online dating statistics, it appears that, on average,
a man has to double his income for every 3 inches of height that he loses.
For example:
A 5 ft 9 in tall man has to make about 2 times as much as a 6 ft 0 in tall guy
does to have the same success in online dating and
a 5 ft 6 in tall man has to make about 4 times as much as a 6 ft 0 in tall guy.
Therefore, it logically follows that a country where the guys are 3 inches taller
but have half the income, after adjusting for the underground economy, would be as difficult,
all else equal, to a country where the men are 3 inches shorter but have twice the income.
2. Each change of 0.05 in the Gender Ratio equals 1 inch of height.
From analyzing online dating statistics, it appears that, on average,
if a man moves to a city with a gender ratio 0.05 lower, his success in dating
increases about as much as if he were to grow 1 inch taller.
For example:
If a 5 ft 9 in man moved from a city with a gender ratio of 1.02
(102 men for every 100 women) to a city with a gender ratio of 0.97 (97 men for every 100 women)
his dating success would increase as much as if he were to grow to 5 ft 10 in tall.
3. Each standard deviation change in facial attractiveness equals 2.5 inches of height.
It appears that, on average, a one standard deviation change in facial attractiveness is the
equivalent of a 2.5 inch change in height.
For example:
A 5 ft 9.5 in tall guy whose facial attractiveness is 1 Standard Deviation above the average
(that is, at the 84th percentile) has about the same level of success in online dating as a
guy who is 6 ft 0 in tall and whose facial attractiveness is exactly average
(that is, at the 50th percentile).
IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THE COUNTRY DATING DIFFICULTY SCORE
NOTE 1. This data is from Mid 2011. As the underlying statistics change, so would the difficulty scores.
NOTE 2. To use the formulas in red, copy them into Microsoft Excel, put the values in where it says [COL ?],
then remove the square end brackets [ and ].
NOTE 3. Please note that this system is not perfect. There are other
factors that affect the dating difficulty that are not included here, such as cultural factors, so
please use your common sense and do additional research. This chart should help you choose a country
but you should consider other factors as well such as whether or not the people in the country you
are considering would accept you.
NOTE 4. The Country Dating Difficulty Score does not include all countries because not all countries have
data available. To be included, I have to have a statistic for the average male height, the
nominal per capita GDP, and the male / female ratio. If any of those statistics are missing the
country is not included. Also, I removed some countries that have obvious cultural problems such
as North Korea, India, and Iran. These countries may be poor and the men may be short but they would
not be easy for an American because of cultural reasons. Therefore, it would make no sense to include them.
NOTE 5. The reason why the Income Score in 4a8b is [=LOG((([COL E])+5000), 2^(1/3))] instead of
[=LOG((([COL E])), 2^(1/3))] is because I am assuming that most countries have about $5,000 worth of
underground economic activity. Poor countries that have low per capita GDP figures often have a high
percentage of their total economy in the black or grey market and therefore often have $5,000 or so
in unreported economic activity per capita. Richer countries have smaller black or grey market economies
as a percentage of their total economy. However, it is often the same in terms of total dollar value. If you
are considering a country and have more accurate information about the size of the black or grey market
economy, you can replace the +5000 figure with a more accurate one for the country that you are considering.
I simply use + $5,000 for all countries because I don't have accurate figures for most countries and it seems
that most countries have underground economies of approximately $5,000 per capita.

SOURCE OR FORMULA:
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases ... 41767.html
Where the percent is listed, it is included.
Most countries had no data so I just used the global average of 17% for those countries.
This is because 17% is the global average. So where it says NA 17% is used to calculate the score.
-> -> 4a8. Column H: DIFFICULTY SCORE This is the raw difficulty score.
SOURCE OR FORMULA: (Copy into a cell in Excel, put the country values in, then remove the end brackets)
[=ROUND((([COL C])+LOG((([COL E])+5000),2^(1/3))+([COL F])*20+((NORMSINV(0.76))-(NORMSINV(1-(([COL G])/100))))*2.5),3)]
RUSSIA EXAMPLE: Plugging Russia's information into this equation:
[=ROUND((69.4)+LOG(((10600)+5000), 2^(1/3))+(0.92)*20+((NORMSINV(0.76))-(NORMSINV(1-((9)/100))))*2.5,3)]
Gives the result:
[128.002]
You can also calculate the Country Dating Difficulty Score by summing up these four subscores:
a. HEIGHT SCORE
b. INCOME SCORE
c. GENDER RATIO SCORE
d. MALE ATTRACTIVENESS ADJUSTMENT SCORE
For an explanation of how those scores are calculated, see 4a8a through 4a8d below:
-> -> -> 4a8a. HEIGHT SCORE This is the average male height in inches from Column C.
HEIGHT FORMULA: The excel formula for height would be identical to the height so just use:
[=([COL C])]
In other words, 1 point of difficulty is added for each increase in the Average Male Height.
-> -> -> 4a8b. INCOME SCORE
INCOME FORMULA:
[=LOG((([COL E])+5000), 2^(1/3))]
For example, if the per capita is $11,400, you would add $5,000 giving an adjusted Per Capita GDP of $16,400.
The Log base 2^(1/3) of that is approximately 42.
If the Per Capita GDP is $3,200, you would add $5,000 giving an adjusted Per Capita GDP of $8,200.
Putting $8,200 in the formula gives a result of approximately 39.
So, in other words, 3 points are added for each doubling of the ((Per Capita GDP) + 5000).
-> -> -> 4a8c. GENDER RATIO SCORE The gender ratio times 20 from Column F.
GENDER RATIO FORMULA:
[=([COL F])*20]
In other words, for each increase of 0.05 in the Gender Ratio an additional difficulty point is added.
A ratio of 1.05 is 1 point harder than a ratio of 1.00.
-> -> -> 4a8d. MALE ATTRACTIVENESS ADJUSTMENT SCORE
MALE ATTRACTIVENESS ADJUSTMENT FORMULA:
[=((NORMSINV(0.76))-(NORMSINV(1-(([COL G])/100))))*2.5]
I used data from BeautifulPeople.com, the percent of men accepted by the site by country, to calculate
the Male Attractiveness Adjustment Score which is added to the raw difficulty score for each country
that has available data.
To see the Male Attractiveness Adjustment Score:
1. Scroll down to the chart in 4d of this post then
2. Look at the score in Column E of that chart.
BRAZIL EXAMPLE: For example, 45% of the men from Brazil who applied at BeautifulPeople.com
were accepted. This is much higher than the US, where 24% of the men who applied were accepted.
Because of this, Brazil's difficulty level is increased by 1.4515 points.
[=((NORMSINV(0.76))-(NORMSINV(1-(([COL G])/100))))*2.5]
[=((NORMSINV(0.76))-(NORMSINV(1-((45)/100))))*2.5]
[=1.4515]
To see the percentage of men who applied to BeautifulPeople.com and were accepted
look at either Column G of the chart in 4b or Column B of the chart in 4d.
Where it says NA, that means no statistic was available. In those cases, I just subtracted 0.6197 points
from the raw score. This is because the USA has a somewhat HIGHER acceptance rate than the
global average (24% versus 17%) average. In the absence of any data, I just assume that the
acceptance rate is the same as the global average of 17%.
-> 4b. CHART OF COUNTRY DATING DIFFICULTY SCORES
-> 4c. EXPLANATION OF THE CHART OF COUNTRY ATTRACTIVENESS
The Chart of Country Attractiveness uses data from Beautifulpeople.com to estimate the facial attractiveness of the people in each country and how their attractiveness would affect dating difficulty. Column E contains the value that is used to adjust the Country Dating Difficulty Score for male facial attractiveness.
-> -> 4c1. Column A: COUNTRY NAME
-> -> 4c2. Column B: PERCENT OF MEN ACCEPTED AT BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE WEBSITE
SOURCE OR FORMULA:
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases ... 41767.html
This is the percent of the men who applied to Beautifulpeople.com from that country who were accepted.
-> -> 4c3. Column C: LOWEST STANDARD DEVIATION (Z SCORE) OF MEN ACCEPTED
SOURCE OR FORMULA:
[=ROUND(NORMSINV(1-(([COL B])/100)),4)]
This is the Standard Deviation Score (Z Score) of the Percentrank within that country
that would be the lower boundary of being accepted at Beautifulpeople.com rounded to 4 decimals.
For example, 28% of the men from Argentina who applied at the website were accepted.
This means that the Percentrank within Argentina of the lower boundary of being accepted is:
100% - 28% = 72%
The Standard Deviation score, or Z score, of 72%, rounded to 4 decimals, is 0.5828.
In other words, since 28% of the men from Argentina were accepted, I am assuming that for a man from
Argentina to be accepted he would have to be more attractive than 72% of the men in his country.
This means he would have to have a Z score of 0.5828 within his country.
-> -> 4c4. Column D: STANDARD DEVIATION (Z SCORE) DIFFERENCE FROM USA
SOURCE OR FORMULA: (Copy into Microsoft Excel, put in values, then remove end brackets [ and ]
[=ROUND((NORMSINV(0.76))-(NORMSINV(1-(([COL B])/100))),4)]
This is the number of Z scores of difference between the country and the USA in terms of male attractiveness.
Since 24% of the men from the USA who applied to Beautifulpeople.com were accepted,
the value in Column C, for the USA, would be 0.7063.
That is because the Z score of 76% is 0.7063 and I am assuming an
American male would have to be at the 76% percentile or higher to be accepted at the website.
For example the value in Column C for Brazil is 0.1257.
0.7063 - 0.1257 = 0.5806
Therefore, assuming that the Brazilian and American male attractiveness distributions are both
normally distributed with the same sized standard deviation, the average Brazilian male is
0.5806 Standard Deviations more attractive than the average American male.
In other words, the value in Column D is the number of Standard Deviations
more or less attractive the average male from that country is compared to
the average American male.
-> -> 4c5. Column E: MALE ATTRACTIVENESS ADJUSTMENT SCORE
SOURCE OR FORMULA:
[=ROUND(((NORMSINV(0.76))-(NORMSINV(1-(([COL B])/100))))*2.5,4)]
This is the number of points of difficulty that are added to the COUNTRY DATING DIFFICULTY SCORE.
From online dating statistics, it appears that 1 SD change in facial attractiveness
is equal to about 2.5 inches of height. Since the difficulty score is based on inches of height,
the difficulty score is increased by 2.5 inches for every SD increase in the value in Column D.
-> -> 4c6. Column F: GLOBAL PERCENTRANK OF AVERAGE MAN FROM COUNTRY
