The last time that I visited the Philippines a couple of years ago, I was surprised that no bank in the country wanted my travelers cheques. I found only one money changer who would take them, and got a rather low rate.
What about banks in Thailand and elsewhere?
Save yourself some trouble and just withdraw money from ATMs. Traveler's checks are a sort of emergency, last resort bit of funds. Personally I don't even bother with them- I have a debit card and two credit cards, but only keep one of the three on me at any given time. In case I get f***ed in triplicate, I have an electronic checking account I can wire money to myself from. Thusfar, I've only had to resort to my backup cards once, and even then only because my bank decided me hopping country to country seemed suspicious. Use a money belt and be mindful of your surroundings, and your money will likely remain secure.
Just take a couple of ATM cards. Bangkok has more ATMs and banks than I've ever seen in any other country!
You might want to tell your bank where you're going, especially if you're going to Thailand. Then they'll make your card work here.
In Thailand AEON bank gives free withdrawals, other banks charge 150 baht (ouch!). AEON is in the basement of Bangkok's Terminal 21 shopping mall.
