Hair Loss Solutions (Transplants, Hair Weaves, and Toupes)

Post by i_want_a_hot_white_chick »

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone on this forum has had a Hair Transplant or uses a hairpiece. I've seen those ads by Bosley. However, I know that advertisers like to exaggerate the value of what they are selling so I suspect Hair Transplants aren't usually as good as they are in advertisments. Therefore, I want to get an unbiased opinion as to whether or not it is a good idea to get a Hair Transplant. They cost about $10,000 so I don't want to waste that money if it isn't going to work.

Also, I have read that there are these Hair Weaves that can be sewn into ones remaining hair that are virtually undetectable. Does anyone here use a Hair Weave or a Hair Piece? If so, how good are they?

Thanks!

I have a friend who wears a hairpiece. I think a lot of women can detect it straight off and others will figure it out if you get intimate with them. I would say its a turn-off to many if not most cus its just not considered natural. And group dynamics can work cruelly against you. The secret will get out and others will mock or laugh at you behind your back. Weaving is not gonna be much better too.

As long as you have a decent amount of good donor hair, a quality transplant will look totally natural and give you a full looking head of hair. But you gotta choose your doctor carefully. There are many online forums with many contributors who have had transplants and give their advice. There are also many vids and before and after photos too.

There are a few Hollywood actors who have had good transplants I think too.

Thanks for the info. I guess I should just get the hair transplant. I just balk at the $10,000 or so that it will cost. Also, I worry that the transplanted hairs might fall out.

They charge per graft and method (FUE is more expensive than strip). Also different doctors have very different pricing. Don't jump into this. Do a lot of research. Its a very complex procedure which involves and element of art. If you get it wrong, you risk not looking natural or having to re-do some of it.

Toupees if not done properly look fake and turn Western women off. I am wearing one that is virtually undetectable. Neither Russian girls nor Filipinas know that it is a toupee.

The problem with transplants is:

1) they cost too much
2) you need to be in one place for some time to attend their regular sessions.

Also, if a woman loves/likes you and then discovers you are using a toupee/hairpiece, she will not care much. Of course, if you are dating an American girl, then she may get all upset about it. But we are not dating them.
There is a company in the Philippines called Newman. Google Newman Philippines Hair Care Center Dau Mabalacat. They make those toupees undetectable.

Depending whether the hair is synthetic or natural, it runs from $300-800. Takes about a week or two. Hairweaves are Ok if you go with a company like Svenson- some $800 in the Philippines as well and they have branches all over the world. The problem is you need to visit them every month or so to have the hair reset. So you always need to be in a country where Svenson is. Kind of ties you down.

1. Lad, your solution sounds interesting and relatively cheap. The good thing about it is that a guy can try it out first. As long as it works, cool. If he eventually finds any problems with it (not natural enough, too difficult to maintain, etc.), then he can upgrade to a hair transplant. Reversible and fairly cheap, the special type of hairpiece you talk about is very low risk.

2. My friend wears a full hair piece in the States. I believe people who look carefully enough can detect it, especially when the wind blows hard or he hasn't styled it for awhile. He married a girl from China several years ago. To this day, she pretends not to know about it, nice way to avoid an embarrassing conversation. Many guys are understandably quite self conscious about toupees and hair pieces.

3. A few things about hair transplants:

a. These days, the best doctors can do the full job in 1-2 day mega-session. And they can transplant the new hair densely enough so that no further sessions are needed. Some practitioners transplant as much as 7,000 to 8,000 grafts in one day. You can be done and on your way in 2-3 days and never need to visit again.

b. However, if your male pattern baldness continues to progress, bald spots may emerge over time behind the permanent transplants. The older you are when you get your first transplant, the lower the risk of significant further loss is.

c. Strip harvesting leaves a long thin scar on the back of your head. If you wear your hair very short (less than 5 mm or so), the scar will probably be detectable. FUE leaves no permanent scaring but ultimately, less hair can be harvested this way. And the FUE price per graft is higher too. If you have relatively small areas of hair loss and don't anticipate a lot more in future, FUE is probably the best way to go. If your baldness is more challenging, strip or strip + FUE maximizes your donor bank so may be better. One indicator of what might be in store for you in the future is the hair loss patterns of your father and/or maternal grandfather.

d. Some doctors also harvest hair from beard area or even body, mainly on patients with insufficient head donor hair. Success of these grafts is less predicable, especially body hair.

Speaking of hair systems, I met a black South African girl in Bangkok between Christmas and 2011 New Year (yes, I went there again for a short trip).

She had light skin, an attractive face, and a beautiful curvy body. She also appeared to have smooth sexy straight long hair. When I met her again a few days later, and got close and personal, something was off. Her head reeked. Turned out she had these hard to maintain hair extensions tied to the roots of her much shorter natural hair. I reckon each shampoo required a lot of extra work so she probably hadn't washed that head for several day in hot and humid Bangkok - nasty!

Here's a hair-loss solution you forgot: SHAVE YOUR HEAD!

Guys with shaved heads are very in now, especially in Eastern Europe. If you have a nice-looking skull (without weird scars and indents) which tans well, then you should do this. It's cheap and it looks cool and makes you look like a badass.

I tried this, but I discovered that I have some ugly lines in my skull and that my scalp doesn't tan well (if you're a black or tan-skinned guy, you won't have this problem. Lol).

Some of you may have better luck.

I think women in Europe care a bit less about a man's hair (although they still care) than American women do. I think more European women are turned off by fat men than by bald men.

Last summer, I saw many guys with shaved heads in Hungary. Also, I met a young Slovakian guy who buzzed his hair with clippers as short as possible.

Yes, that's exactly what Neil Strauss did and recommended (think he spray tanned or did some sun bed sessions too). And keep in mind, he's only about 5'6".

But in Eastern Europe, what distinguishes fashionably head shaved guys appearance wise from the hard-core skin-heads besides perhaps tattoos?

1) how you dress -
If you dress stylishly and stay away from any military-type clothes, you generally won't look like a skinhead. For instance, look at the way the white guy in the new video I posted dresses. Nobody would think that he's a skinhead in a fashionable white t-shirt.

2) facial expression -
Skin heads usually don't smile much, except maybe in an evil way.

So there you have it: dress fashionably and look friendly.

I have some hair loss in the back of my head.

I LOVE my hair and hate the fact it is thinning. :(

If the thinning gets bad enough though I will start shaving. An older male friend in his 40s does that and he gets LOTS of sex lol.

Well, thinning hair is a bummer. Some people actually look good with a shaved head. Some people look messed up :)

As for hair loss solutions, the only one that really works is transplants. I've got alot of friends who've tried other solutions.
And as mentioned, it is around 10k, and is usually performed in multiple stages. 3 iirc. There's healing time in between each stage so it isn't as simple as going in for one surgery. It takes time, and it can be a real pain.

BUT, in the long run, i think it's worth it. Thinning hair does affect your social life and interactions. Please don't tell me this is BS because it isn't :P
Most of all, it will affect your confidence if you have issues with it.

Also, some ethnic groups of women (think Asian or Chinese, etc) consider early balding or thinning as a sign of lost virility...in other words, they may think you can't get it up.

That used to be the case. Ten years ago, the most famous doctors approached it that way. Of course, many old school practitioners, including the famous ones from the 90s are still doing multiple sessions. Many others doctors use this method too cus it requires a lot less skill.

But is at least a handful of famous doctors around the world today who do it all in one session. They are skilled at transplanting with very high densities and achieving minimal transection rates (below 5%). And there are plenty of before and after photos and videos of patients followed for several years including close-up shots of the roots to show results. There are many hair transplant forums too where patients discuss their results - good or bad.

As for costs, the reality is that they vary tremendously. A patient who gets just a 800 grafts using strip with a lower cost doctor may under $4,000. Another patient getting 5,000-7,000 grafts using combined strip and FUE with an expensive doctor may pay over $30,000-40,000.

The factors which influence how many grafts you need include your reading on the Norwood Scale, your donor density, your scalp laxity (for strip), how fine or coarse your individual hairs are, whether they are curly, wavy, or straight, your hair color, your age, whether your choose to build a more youthful or more mature hairline, and whether you need to fill-in the temple area and/or crown. Unfortunately, some people are not good candidates for hair transplants, especially those at the highest end of the Norwood Scale, low donor density, fine straight light colored hair, and poor scalp laxity.

Prudent doctors generally side towards a more mature hairline and will recommend using only a small percentage of total donor hair, especially on younger patients. Your donor hair is your total hair bank account. Once you've depleted it, its gone forever. As transplant patients age, their male pattern baldness often progresses (bald spot expands). So its common to need a second transplant in 10-15 years to cover the new bald areas which emerge behind the transplanted hair. Of course, if the donor bank account has been depleted, its almost impossible to do this. Conservative doctors leave you some donor hair to use in your older age in case.

There are a few great doctors in the States (famous for natural looking hairlines and temple work and dense packing). And there are others in countries like Belgium, India, and Australia. Different doctors have different areas of expertise. For example, if you are normally a poor candidate, you can consider going to a specialist in transplanting body hair to the head. If you want perfection and have minimal hair loss, you might consider an FUE expert with tight packing skills and a strong artistic sense about hairlines.

Trust me, this procedure is not a cookie-cutter type of process. If you want to maximize results (satisfaction, cost, etc.) you gotta do the research and find the right doctor. At least narrow it down those who have lots of great before and afters of cases similar to your own and who get good feedback on 3rd party forums.
