The main problem with this is that there is usually no way of earning money in these areas, and people are slowly being squeezed out in various ways (increasing utility costs, withdrawal of medical services etc.) I had the idea of moving to a remote mountain town, living off wild-caught resources and then slowly withdrawing myself from the formal economy as the system collapsed, but it is not really doable on an individual basis.
