A certain percentage of it was, but still mostly were immigrants looking to start over, similar to America or Canada. What was considered a crime in England back then is questionable as you could be put in jail for being in debt and other silly stuff like that.

Yes - some people were deported for nicking a loaf of bread for example - now people would be begging to be deported to Oz.

My parents nearly took us out there on the assisted passage scheme which cost about $10 at the time!!! For some reason they never went ahead with it. Que sera sera.

Yes it is true. It is also true that the convicts arrived with more alcohol than food. Since then nothing has changed much, it is still a country with crime, bogans, and alcoholism.
