Is fasting a good way to lose weight and detoxify yourself?

Post by Winston »

Hi all,
My friend Walt said in one of his newsletters that a good way to detoxify yourself is to fast and not eat for a week and drink only liquids. People who do that will clean out their system and look healthier and younger, he says. Others have told me about this before too.

Is this a good idea? I don't know if I could only drink liquids for a week though. That sounds kind of extreme.

How do you get nutrition during that time? By drinking juice, protein shakes, etc.?

Anyone have experience with this?

What's the difference between fasting and dieting?

Fasting has a spiritual/religious core to it, whereas dieting is strictly for "health" reasons. A "diet" is a your eating regimen in general, as you conduct it throughout your life. Its current sense of losing weight as a goal in and of itself is just a modern American bastardization of the original term. I never hear of other countries obsessing about "dieting" like people do in the US, because in most other countries people have a normal and natural healthy eating regimen (i.e. their diet). Americans are stuck in vicious cycle of eating garbage, feeling guilty, and then purging themselves. To me, there is a spiritual sickness behind it that you don't see in most other countries.

I have done that but it is extremely hard to do. But i have done it for losing weight. So i switched to raw food diet. Eating carbs and fresh vegetables along with liquids. And that really helped me. May be it can also work in making your skin clearer. I have never noticed any glow effect in my skin ... lol

I don't see how dieting is possible. Each time I try to skip meals, I get so hungry that I can't control myself and have to eat. I can't just choose not to eat. The hungry stomach takes control of my decisions. How can you possibly make a decision against your own stomach? How is it possible?

Self control, mind over matter... if one can not master the simplest of needs how can they hope to maneuver in life?

If you had looked into the chia water you would have found a good way to skip meals yet not be hungry... :)

Check out these articles about fasting. I didn't know that when you fast, your body is freed up from digestion so that it can concentrate on detoxifying you. Wow, that's interesting.

These articles say that intermittent fasting, one or two days a week of nothing but water, can increase your lifespan and detoxify you. Wow I didn't know that.

How do you guys do this? I fasted one day and it was excruciating. I started having hunger pains and began being obsessed about eating something. Not everyone can skip meals. I felt like crap when I fasted one day, not because of toxins being released from my fat cells, but because of hunger pains and being deprived of food.

Btw, check out this video about Breatharians, those who claim to be able to live permanently without food or water. You guys believe it? lol

I suppose these Breatherians can only get energy from a yellow sun. A red one won't feed them. That's why Clark Kent doesn't actually have to eat. If it was in a Superman movie, why not believe it, right? Our bodies can use sunlight to process vitamin D. That's what I've heard about. Plants have chlorophyll. They convert sunlight into sugars. We eat the sugars.

If someone can go for a super long period of time without eating and stay healthy, that's a miracle. A 40 day fast is possible, though. I know of someone whose done it, probably more than one.

A lot of this 'detox' stuff is a myth. There are people who believe they can eat saturated fats and preservatives for 30 years, and then go for a week eating broccoli shakes and that is supposed to suck all kinds of poison from their bloodstream. I hear, it takes 7 years to replace all the molecules from our bodies with new ones. It takes a while to 'cleanse' from bad eating habits. A week of drinking broccoli won't do it. People who sell books on fasting may insist that toxins are stored in the fat. Is there any kind of scientific literature to back that up? Fasting may have some health benefits. I'm suspicious of calling it 'detox.'
