Low Testosterone - What to do? Take pills, shots, creams, supplements to boost it?

Post by Winston »

Do any of you take testosterone pills? If so, do they help?

Check out this one called Progene that I saw advertised on TV:

http://www.progene.com

It's available in stores like Costco too.

http://www.costco.com/Progene%C2%AE-All ... 16900.html

How do you know what your testosterone level is? Is there a home test kit you can get without going to the doctor?

No. First step you should take is to get some blood tests to see your total and free T levels, estrogen levels, cholesterol, etc. That's the first step before going on any kind of therapy.

Secondly, if the blood tests show low T levels, no prostrate problems, and other indicators are go, you can consult with a specialist about testosterone therapy. I think oral forms are bad because they can overtax and damage your liver. Don't stab in the dark about this. Go step by step and lay the necessary foundation first.

Testosterone pills can cause liver damage, Testosterone cream is much safer to use. Testosterone cream is very effective the only problem you may encounter is hair loss if your doctor gets the dosage wrong (too much).

If testosterone pills can cause liver damage, then why are they selling it in stores like Costco and GNC? Aren't there laws against dangerous supplements?

My doctor was the one that told me testosterone pills can cause liver damage but you can research it. Most drugs shouldn't be on the market because of safety issues but they get approved anyway. The pills at Costco and GNC might only stimulate testosterone production as apposed to containing testosterone.

Those are not "testosterone pills" Winston. Those are a blend of herbs that are touted to "boost" your natural levels of testosterone. If they really worked well for anyone, they'd be talked about on MANY forums on the internet. Don't waste your money.

I agree with Rock. You can either find a good physician (I recommend a Life Extension type doctor) to order bloodwork for you or you can purchase it yourself. There is Directlabs.com and many others. I recommend you get a full male hormone blood panel. It's likely the most expensive one, but will test your Total and Free Testosterone, Estrogen as well as everything to determine your general health. I will be doing bloodwork every 3 months until I get back on top of my health. I'd be glad to share with you anything that helps me in the process. I have a good doctor in Las Vegas (VERY expensive), but I'd rather pay for a good one than to waste time/money on a quack....

If you have low testosterone, high estrogen, low SHBG, high TSH, etc, it could be a sign that something else that is wrong. Finding a good doctor and doing your own research is going to be critical to improving health. There is a HUGE percentage of people walking around the USA that have Metabolic Syndrome that have no clue that they have it. They can either take the steps to fix it or remain obese and look forward to Diabetes, Stroke, Heart Attack, Cancer, etc in their future. No one is immune from death or disease of course, but you CAN give yourself a better chance while feeling/looking better at the same time...

If you have very low testosterone levels without any other issues on blood work then I would definitely recommend that you supplement (legal script) with Testosterone INJECTIONS. Creams often don't work as not everyone absorbs them very well. Also, if you sleep with a woman, it WILL end up on her skin (causing all sorts of issues for her). Go with injections...hands down better and more effective.

If you want better herbal concoctions for boosting testosterone, visit a Chinese medicine doctor or your local Asian market that sells Chinese medicine.

Human growth hormone aka HGH is a far better choice if done in the correct amount, I still think test boosters are beneficial but moderation is the key.

This material covers the effects of HGH http://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJM199007053230101

I've experienced low over the counter pills for test boosters and HGH boosters, and it's the real deal, the longer you've taken them the longer you've held off old age.

Don't take them before your 25 years old, you'll screw up your naturally balance, and you'll want to take time off of these drugs if you pick to use them.

Though I've taken some mild over the counter pills, I've never taken the REAL HGH and test boosters, so try at your own risk, but I've had talks with guys who really did it, all of them look better and younger then the people who didn't take it.

it's a expensive thing to do, but you'll feel energy and libido unlike any other.

But make no mistake, you'll seriously destroy your life if you don't do it right, it's not something to do casually.

My sports knowledge originally got interested in this subject and it has opened my eyes to the closest you'll come to the fountain of youth in the next 50 years.

If a man is truly deficient in Testosterone levels, there is NOTHING that will take the place of it....nothing. GH (even the real deal) won't help a man with severely reduced Testosterone levels. That is why it is important to have a good Life Extension doctor who will continually monitor your health and well being, including ordering regular blood work. No one here can afford REAL USP-Grade HGH anyway, it's many thousands of dollar PER MONTH. Insurance won't cover it unless you have a serious disease (ex. AIDS). Most of those younger, healthy guys that use GH are getting Chinese GH and using it illegally. Even that is expensive....

Hi Winston,

Great question about finding out your levels.
From our national research, we've discovered that over 90% of men don't know their levels but would like to find out... particularly when we all lose 1-2% each year (by 45 we could have lost up to 50%!)

As a result, one of the other products we created was an at-home test kit:
http://www.costco.com/Progene%C2%AE-Tes ... 07154.html
This is a clinical grade saliva based test (ELISA methodology) using an FDA approved processes. Our labs are CLIA certified and actually use the same process as what's used at hospitals, clinics and doctors offices.

Additionally, to provide for truly objective testing, all of our test results are "blind"- where only you know the results from a random barcode identifier. This allows you to do whatever testing you want to do with what ever products you want to test.

For more info on the tests:
http://progene.com/testosterone_test/progene_labs

Our recommendation (like a few of the other comments) would be to definitely check levels first.
Once done, try Progene (or any other product for that matter) and objectively measure results in a second test (Costco's club packs are bundled with 2 tests)

Changes between tests are generally seen as early as 7-10 days with most showing changes before 21 days.
(observable levels are also noticed with the return of "morning wood"... where this comes back, reminding you of how you were when you were younger as testosterone levels increase)

To answer one of the other comments about supplements and the production of testosterone...
I think we all know that protein shakes help in the process of building muscles by providing the ingredients needed to create muscles.
Similarly, Progene also provides the body ingredients needed in the production of more testosterone (including clinically known testosterone precursors).
But because we also know that everyone metabolizes ingredients differently, we're also the only brand in the country with individually measurable results.

If you have any medically related questions, feel free to connect with one of our healthcare providers at:
http://ProgeneHealthcare.com
Yes, in addition to being doctor recommended, Progene is also the only brand with a network of healthcare professionals across the country... key reasons why we were selected by Costco.

All the best!

ps: While we do know of other products that can cause liver damage (this is usually from adulterated formulations using prescription / synthetic ingredients), Progene does not contain any of those ingredients and has been reviewed (extensively) by retail buyers & their labs. In fact, Progene's been in market for over 11 years with a safe & effective formulation... that's 2-3x longer than prescription testosterone and 3-5x longer than most all other supplement brands.

Certainly that will help along with:
- Exercise (also helps to increase the metabolism of Progene ingredients)
- Getting sufficient sleep (hormones are produced at night/when sleeping)

Unfortunately, because of age, you still lose 1-2% per year.
Like death & taxes... getting older is also unavoidable.

If you're thinking about it- Progene's on sale now at Costco.
Check out Costco's Summer Sale (til 8/24 or while supplies last)

ps: An interesting study would be testosterone levels before & after changing a life factor like caffeine... you can objectively measure this with our test kits.

It looks like the Progene company found this thread and had a rep respond to it. lol

Should I get that testosterone testing kit at Costco? Is it made by the manufacturer of Progene? If so, then wouldn't it be biased?

Hey get this. This says that vegan men have more testosterone than meat eaters. WTF?

Any suppliment that really did increase testosterone is always banned asap by the government.

And your question, yes, I use testosterone replacement and have used it for years now. I've used all the different forms and recommend a low dose of the shot, Testosterone Cypionate, along with a half-dose of bio-identical testosterone cream, such as Androgel, thoughy its very pricey. (some compounding pharmacies have good grade testosterone powder and can make a testosterone cream that's almost as good but cost much less) There's a synergistic effect going on with these two, has to be, because it was really awesome! Sex drive like when I was 18, and the energy levels to match. But even a high dose of just one by itself didn't work as well. As for the testosterone pills, I'm not sure they are being made anymore, at least not in the USA for HRT purposes. but I've used those too. Methyl Testosterone. It made me very aggressive and horny. But its just too liver toxic to stay on it without constant blood test. I second the advice about staying away from caffeine. . . Not that it lowers levels so much as you simply aren't as responsive to what you already have in you, is what Ive felt.
