Everyday Mexican (VS. American) Music
Everyday Mexican (VS. American) Music
What Mexicans listen to everyday (songs focus far more on other people)
AND
What Americans listen to everyday (songs focus far more on the individual self)
A couples of decades ago, there were still American pop songs with thoughtful lyrics, but now they're difficult to find. This is not the case with Mexico.
MEXICO
SONG 1
Visit Mexico, and you'll hear this kind of music constantly playing in public areas (street corners, restaurants, buses) everyday. Live musicians are very common too.
The music is usually very upbeat even if the lyrics are quite sad.
I am not aware of any recently produced American pop songs about mothers. But Mexicans (even the teenagers!) still listen to songs like these all the time:
Ni Por Mil Puñados De Oro (Not Even for a Thousand Pieces of Gold)
Se me destroza el corazón en mil pedazos
Me siento sola como la pluma en el aire
De que me sirve ya la vida en este mundo
Si ya no tengo las caricias de mi madre
[My heart is shattered into a thousand pieces
I feel so alone, like a feather in the air
What is life for me in this world
If I don't have the caresses of my mother]
Mientras yo andaba disfrutando de placeres
Jamás pensaba que una madre es lo primero
Por que Diosito se llevó a mi pobre madre
Porque una madre no se compra con dinero
[While I went about enjoying all sorts of pleasures
I never thought that a mother would come first
Why did God take away my poor mother
Because a mother cannot be bought with money]
Yo no cambiaba ni por mil puñados de oro
Las bendiciones ni el cariño de mi madre
De carne viva son las lágrimas que lloro
Pero es inútil porque ya las lloro tarde
[No, I won't trade it even for a thousand pieces of gold
The blessings and care of a mother
Of live flesh are the tears that I cry
But it's useless because I've cried them too late]
SONG 2
This song is about Mexican migrants experiencing loneliness in America. Notice the family themes, rather than the materialistic and self-centered lyrics of most American pop songs now.
Paso del Norte (Pass of the North)
Que triste se encuentra el hombre
cuando anda ausente
cuando anda ausente
muy lejos ya de su patria
[How sad a man becomes
When he goes away
When he goes away
Very far from his homeland]
Mayormente si se acuerda
de sus padres y su chata
Ay que destino
para ponerme a llorar
[Mostly he thinks about
His parents and his girlfriend/wife
Oh what a fate -
That causes me to cry]
Paso del norte
que lejos te vas quedando
tus divisiones
de mi se estan alejando
[Pass of the North
How far away you are!
Those separations
Are isolating me more and more]
Mis padres y mis hermanos
de me se estan acordando
Ay que destino
para ponerme a llorar
[My parents and siblings
are thinking about me
Oh what a fate -
That causes me to cry]
SONG 3
This is one of Mexico's most popular songs, and contains plenty of wisdom. Notice the deep sense of connection that's there in the audience (not just robotic party-goers):
Vagando paso la vida
nomas recorriendo el mundo
si quieren que se los diga
yo soy un alma sin dueno
a mi no me importa nada
pa' mi la vida es un sueno
[Wandering, I pass through life
Just going through the world
If they want to have it said
I am a soul without an owner
To me, nothing (worldly) matters
For me, life is a dream]]
yo tomo cuando yo quiero
no miento soy muy sincero
y soy como las gaviotas
volando de puerto en puerto
yo se que la vida es corta
al fin que tambien la debo
[I drink when I want to
I don't lie; I am very sincere
I am like the doves
Flying from town to town
I know that life is short
At the end I also owe it]
el dia que yo me muera
no voy a llevarme nada
hay darle gusto al gusto
la vida pronto se acaba
lo que paso en este mundo
nomas los recuerdos quedan
ya muerto voy a llevarme
nomas un puño de tierra
[The day that I die
I will not take anything with me
You have to enjoy everything
Life will end soon
What happens in this world
Only the memories will remain
Now deceased, I will take with me,
No more than a fistful of dirt]
USA
Visit the US, and this kind of music will be played in people's private iPod's everyday. Highly narcissistic, don't you think?
No wonder so many American women remain single:
Single Ladies (Beyoncé)
All the single ladies (7x)
Now put your hands up
Up in the club, we just broke up
I’m doing my own little thing
you Decided to dip but now you wanna trip
Cuz another brother noticed me
I’m up on him, he up on me
dont pay him any attention
cuz i cried my tears, GAVE three good years
Ya can’t be mad at me
[Chorus]
Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
I got gloss on my lips, a man on my hips
hold me tighter than my Dereon jeans
acting up, drink in my cup
I couldnt care less what you think
I need no permission, did I mention
Dont pay him any attention
Cuz you had your turn
But now you gonna learn
What it really feels like to miss me
Don’t treat me to the things of this world
I’m not that kind of girl
Your love is what I prefer, what I deserve
Is a man that makes me, then takes me
And delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond
Pull me into your arms
Say I’m the one you WANT
If you don’t, you’ll be alone
And like a ghost I’ll be gone
American women think they run everything:
Who run the world? Girls (girls) [over and over and over again!]
Despite all the narcissism ("MY song") and partying that's going on, she admits to being in a land of "fame, excess" and feeling uncomfortable.
Party In The USA (Miley Cyrus)
I hopped off the plane at L.A.X.
With a dream and my cardigan
Welcome to the land of fame excess,
Am I gonna fit in?
Jumped in the cab,
Here I am for the first time
Look to my right and I see the Hollywood sign
This is all so crazy
Everybody seems so famous
My tummy's turnin' and I'm feelin' kinda home sick
Too much pressure and I'm nervous,
That's when the taxi man turned on the radio
And a Jay-Z song was on
And the Jay-Z song was on
And the Jay-Z song was on
[Chorus:]
So I put my hands up
They're playing my song,
And the butterflies fly away
I'm noddin' my head like yeah
I'm movin' my hips like yeah
I got my hands up,
They're playin' my song
I know I'm gonna be OK
Yeah, it's a party in the USA
Yeah, it's a party in the USA
Get to the club in my taxi cab
Everybody's looking at me now
Like "Who's that chick, that's rockin' kicks?
She gotta be from out of town"
So hard with my girls not around me
It's definitely not a Nashville party
'cause all I see are stilettos
I guess I never got the memo
My tummy's turnin' and I'm feelin' kinda home sick
Too much pressure and I'm nervous
That's when the D.J. dropped my favorite tune
and a Britney song was on
and a Britney song was on
and a Britney song was on
[Chorus]
Feel like hoppin' on a flight (on a flight)
Back to my hometown tonight (town tonight)
Something stops me every time (every time)
The DJ plays my song and I feel alright
[Chorus x2]

MEXICO
SONG 1
Visit Mexico, and you'll hear this kind of music constantly playing in public areas (street corners, restaurants, buses) everyday. Live musicians are very common too.
It's kinda ironic because when I went to Mexico in the 90s (my parents are from there), all I heard was American music (Cher, Marylin Manson, Third Eye Blind etc). I wasn't in any tourist area or big city but medium sized city in San Luis Potosi. I hear from other folks that American music is also popular in Mexico I hear more ranchero and marachi music in my SoCal neighborhood then I did in Mexico. I still hear it when I visit my parents in SoCal. It's not my cup of tea, I prefer listening to Juanes, Mana, Selena, Old Gloria Trevi etc. I don't like listening to most of today's music because it's trashy and repetitive.
If I'm not mistaken, you said you were from Southern California. Hmmm may I ask where? I'm a SoCal native but currently live in the SF Bay Area.
