Now calm down guys! Her letter was very emotional and she must have had a bad experience. And now to all the comments here:
1) Puerto Rico is NOT a country. It is a US territory. Know your geography. Puerto Ricans are Americans and Puerto Rican women are American women. Latin US people. Do not ask a Puerto Rican for a green card, you will get sued.
2) American men who are reading this need to read through the emotionalism and find jewels and traits that need to be corrected as well. One of them is the lowering of educational standards, the men's image, and the lack of reading and refinement on part of present-day American men. The crude thug type, the Rambo, Bruce Willis blue collar proletarian patriot who gets what he wants not through study or business efforts or being smart but by being a shrewed thug or a soldier and it is what many imitate. Because women like it, I guess and because they are taught to be like that by the popular culture. An almost inhuman Ghetto gangster replaced a very polite and gentle, religious Southern American Black guy, as well.

I am sure if American men began looking inside themselves, that may affect the women there, as well. Watch some movies out of the 1950ies or 1930ies and watch the behavior of an American male. Refined, intellectual, a thorough gentleman. And the woman was like that in those times- smart, feminine. One cannot deny that as Gregory Peck became replaced with Bruce Willis and Rambo who cannot even speak proper English, the women starting reflecting them and vice versa. It is a sad fact that there has to be some kind of reflection of men upon women and vice versa.
Homosexuality is rampant in America, too. And it did not use to be. There was no prison rape in America until the 1950ies. And that includes the American land of Puerto Rico.
3) I spent 3 semesters in PR. My gripe with it was that women there are mostly Catholic virgins, heavily into Christianity, a fanatical, dark, medievial variety of it. They are scared of sex, most will never do it even with a BF they have had for a long time. They also like money very much and do not care if a man is ugly or fat or old as long as he has a job and a car.
The good thing about Puerto Rico is that people are approachable and one can make friends easily. The island is very beautiful and the food is great. There is very little racial discrimination and it is , inspite of everything, a happy place.

It takes two to tango. Men also have to take at least some responsibility for what is happening

I too have extensive experience living in Puerto Rico. This discussion has nothing to do with geography.

If you ask most Puerto Ricans from the island (and not Nuyoricans living in the continental US), they DO NOT consider themselves Americans, they consider themselves American citizens only, but Puerto Rican (or Boricua) by nationality. That's why Puerto Ricans do not compete in the Olympics or beauty pageants as Americans and they have their own flag and national anthem. Puerto Rico is officially considered an "associated free state" by the PR government, and the US government officially considers it a commonwealth, not a territory. Citizenship and nationality are two vastly different things to the Puerto Rican.

Now the Nuyoricans, are Americans through and through, but they just consider themselves ethnically Puerto Rican. Keep in mind that true Puerto Ricans consider Nuyoricans to be sell-outs, and non-authentic Puerto Ricans.

When was the last time you have been there? It sounds like it has been a long time. It is extremely different now. Most people are moving away from the rigid Christianity into secularism more and more.

Very few girls remain virgins past the age of 15. Also, the general social bliss that you wrote of is now gone due largely to the unemployment rate being around 20% and rising.

Yes, the women are more approachable than mainstream American women on average, but they are more quick to invoke state or court actions against men for whatever reason. The divorce rate is the 7th highest in the world and the fasted growing rate in the world. Perhaps most telling is that male homosexuality is now rampant among young men there because of the social environment between the sexes.

I view modern American men and women as a product of the 60's and baby boomer generation which rejected the genteel well mannered and spoken ideal in favor of a rebellious one that is out to make it for themselves. This wasn't necessarily a bad change since the preceding generation was full of ideas that were not only impractical but classist and authoritarian in nature. It's just that the pendulum has swung too far.

Now what we are seeing is a mish-mash of social ideals which include rather hypocritical stances on race, gender, etc.. America is very much still in the experimental stages when it comes to race and gender. In my opinion people get along as well as they do because of a very strong economic backbone in America that has had a nice post WW2 lead. It's difficult to complain too much when people can still manage as middle class. The real test will be if American can withstand internal pressure if there is ever another serious great depression like turmoil that's when all the cards will be laid bare.

Puerto Ricans are American Citizens, not Americans.

But just like Hawaii and Washington, D.C. and San Francisco are part of the U.S.A. but NOT part of "America", so too people from PR are not Americans.

In that they are outside the mainstream, bell curve, 60th percentile normal distribution of what an "American" behaves like, acts likes, talks like.

You will find that most Americans agree with this assessment, and attempting to correct us on this will end in futility. Cultures have a right to define what makes someone from their culture. Does not being born in Russia NOT make one a Russian? Well in America there are odd cultural rules like that, too.

"America" might be appropriately considered as the USA minus the liberal top 3o media markets, Hawaii and the territories.

It is an opinion and some people agree with it and some do not. I just go by what the law says. Russia is a different case- they are an ethnic 'race' same as Japanese and Koreans and/or Germans and see themselves as such. They have faces that one can recognize and are basically a breed. Russia before the revolution had a law whereby a person who was not Orthodox would never be given citizenship but even if he accepted the religion and was, he was still not of the stock and people would grumble. But those were opinions. According to his Majesty the Czar he was now a Russian and anyone who disagreed could be severely punished. It took name changing and many generations of intermixing to even remotely be accepted as a Russian by the people there. The good thing though, Russian or not, one could date girls there and marry with them to one's heart content. Society was not closed and one would not be cut off. All foreigners who went there and who wanted to fit in- learned the language, accepted Orthodoxy), quickly found wives and integrated eventually. You would be accepted, you would just have hard time being accepted as a Russian if you did not look like them, did not talk like them and did not have a Russian name/face.

But America is a giant melting pot of mostly recent immigrant population, Russia is not.

Again, I have not polled all Americans to see if they say that Puerto Ricans are not Americans or if they are, and also, to what degree do most people agree if "American" and "American citizen" are one and the same or not. Some people say yes and some say no. That is what opinions are- they are various in number and character. Above them all, reign laws. Some agree with laws and some do not. American Indians say they are the true Americans, WASP people say they are, the rest hyphenate and call themselves this and that and the other. This is not an easy issue and depends on the geographical and social environment and who you ask.

Some peopel say Cajuns are not Americans, and it goes on and on. But again these are opinions.

It is kind of hard to send people into war if they are told they are not Americans. Here is Mel Gibson's opinion:

However, I must agree with you on one thing- the way island Puerto Ricans are seen on the mainland in daily life, they do act like Latin Americans and talk and behave like them based on the mainland Gringo's view. However, compared to the true and blue Latin America, they are too Gringo to fit in there. So, I guess, culturally they are stuck in the middle- too Latin for the Anglo mainstream and too Anglo for the Latin American mass below the border. Politically and legally, they are as American as the Grand Wizard of the KKK. Especially if they are on mainland.

And last but not least, let me ask that question on the Web community and ask Americans if they think Puerto Ricans are Americans or not and if there is a difference between an American and an American citizen.

She needs to be put in her place. Men have a harder time dating and finding women in the USA even though there are slightly more females than males in the US.
