Fertile women attracted to flirtatious men

UK scientists have found that women tend to find flirtatious men more attractive when they are going through the fertile phase of their menstrual cycle.

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth found that women are more likely to respond to flirtatious facial expressions when they are ovulating.

The study, which is published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, involved 47 women who were asked to rate the attractiveness of several animated facial models on a scale of one to seven.

The models had been designed to show varying degrees of flirtatiousness.

Researchers found that women consistently preferred the more flirtatious faces when they were going through fertile phases of their menstrual cycle.

Evolutionary psychologist Dr Edward Morrison described the face as 'the human equivalent of the peacock's tail'.

'By preferring these traits when they are more fertile, women have increased chances of passing them on to their offspring,' he revealed.

'Selecting the most favourable mate is one of the most fundamental aspects of human behaviour.'

Ovulation usually happens ten to 16 days before the start of a woman's next period.
