Americans Having Less Sex Today Than They Were 25 Years Ago

Post by jamesbond » March 9th, 2017, 2:25 pm

A new study released Tuesday shows that American adults are having less sex than a quarter of a century ago, with the biggest decline being among married people.
The study, published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior, showed a decline in sexual activity across gender, race, region, education level, and work status.

One of the factors for this decline is the increase in the percentage of unpartnered people, who tend to have less sex than partnered ones.

But a major factor for this decline stems from a steady decline in the rate of sexual activity for people who are married or living with partners.

The study found that American adults have sex seven to nine fewer times per year than in the 1990s, according to data from the General Social Survey from 1984-2014.

The average person used to have sex 60 to 62 times a year in the 1990s, but by 2014 that number dropped to less than 53 times per year.

The drop in sexual activity among married people was even sharper, going from 73 times a year in 1990 to 55 in 2014. The frequency of sexual activity among married people was below that of unmarried people, who have sex an average of 59 times a year.

The study said people who are not in couples, including those married in the past, have sex half as much as those who are.

The decrease in couples backs up this claim. Sixty-six percent of Americans were living with a partner in 1986; in 2014, only 59 percent were, according to GSS data.

The report listed possible factors for the decline in sexual activity, including increased access to entertainment and social media; a decline in happiness among people 30 and over; higher incidence of depression; and use of anti-depressants associated with sexual dysfunction.

The study found a steady drop in sexual activity as people aged, but when comparing the same time period in each generation, it turns out that those born in the 1930s had sex the most often, while those born in the 1990s had sex the least.

The sharpest decline in sexual activity was among people in their 50s, people with a college degree, people with school-age children, people in the South, and those who do not watch pornography, according to the study.

Interestingly they don't factor in rising obesity. I had a mate once whose wife got fat. He said when he came out of the shower and saw that fat thing in bed he lost all desire, although he still loved her.

I am not sure how they factor in ageing population. They mention looking at age groups, but the average age is increasing, hence average frequency must decline. 60-62 times per year would be very little for the first few years of marriage before kids, and extremely little for after getting divorced. It is even little for me now. It doesn't mention if that is an an average or what age group it applies to.

Even at 73 times a year, that is only twice a week if you remove a week for a woman's cycle from consideration. That's low, especially for a young couple. But I guess that includes elderly folks who use canes and people in wheelchairs.

I notice those born in the 1930's had sex the most. I've got several theories for the drop in sex:

1. Premarital sex.

Having premarital sex may mess up the couple's psyche, especially the woman, leading to her not enjoying sex as much as she would have had she waited until marriage.

2. Women being less submissive

I believe women appreciate their husbands more when they embrace the idea of submitting to their husbands and actually do so. When the man is in charge, and he tells her he wants to have sex with her, and she agrees, since he's in charge, they have a more active sex life. If women have too much power in the relationship, they may start having the man jump through hoops to have sex with her. And then she looses respect and a degree of interest in her man, because a man answering to her every whim and jumping through her hoops is not sexy to her. The lack of prespect leads to a lack of sex. One of my theories is that feminism leads to less sex.

Btw, I recall there was a study that showed that couples with traditional divisions of labor, e.g. women cooking and doing the dishes, had more sex than other couples.

3. Too much emphasis on consent.

It used to be, legally, in the US that there was no such thing as marital rape. I don't think men should force their wives, but the shift toward the idea that there needs to be consent in marriage is off balance. Where are the voices telling women they are supposed to be good wives and part of that is fulfilling their husband's sexual needs? If women hear you can call the cops if he touches you, or that if he persuades you to have sex willingly, he's actually raping you, but she never hears how she needs to have sex with her man to keep him happy, that's can mess up a couple's sex life.

4. Fat

Kradmelder mentioned it. People are fatter now. That may translate into less sex.

5. Porn

Men who use porn and then 'take care of themselves' may not be interested in their wives, who may be fatter and not look as good as the women in the porn. Viewing porn can mess up normal sexual desire.

6. VIdeo gamess

Some guys get so absorbed in video games that they don't have as much sex as they could.

If

The study said people who are not in couples, including those married in the past, have sex half as much as those who are.

The decrease in couples backs up this claim. Sixty-six percent of Americans were living with a partner in 1986; in 2014, only 59 percent were, according to GSS data.

A low birth rate means the women are promiscuous before marriage and as a result the men refuse to marry them. Any country that averages less than 2 kids per women has women that are difficult to get along with (high divorce rate).

What is more strange is that they haveven less kids so should have more sex. Before kids we had sex once a day. After kids it dropped off to once a week then once a month.

Being single had far more sex than married with kids. So more singles should be more sex.

I know I sure am. The 25 years ago, not the 1930s.

I don't even have sex, because I'm not happy. If I was in a relationship I probably would, lots. Empty sex isn't really a source of fulfillment for me, but I could see how it could be.

There are so many other things to worry about aside from this...its a sgmptom. Not the problem.

Empty sex with no relationshit may not be as fulfilling, but it is better than the frustration of permanently full and aching balls

Just dont get fixated on it so that you dont recognise a decent woman when she comes along. '

I can see the difference. I got rid of the last mistress in December because she started pushing for a relationshit and started flaking at the last minute. Now that I have a decent one the former mistress starts with ít doesn't matter. I really want to see you'. She assumes she can start sex with me again behind another woman's back. I would not do such a thing. No decent woman would even suggest it, nor sleep with a man that would do that. So it is best to keep the non decent ones at arms length, no matter how good a shag they are.

Those numbers sound so dismal, even 73 times a year. That's less than twice a week. I guess that includes old married couples in their '90's and people in wheelchairs.

I wonder if part of the reason for the decrease is because there are so many baby boomers. The baby boomers were young enough to have a decent amount of sex, maybe, in the 1990's, still in their 40's or whatever. Now, with that big group of the population in their '60's, they aren't having as much sex because of arthiritus in the hips or whatever. Maybe that's the main explanation.

I also wonder how they count 'having sex.'

What's upsetting to me, is that there's this "keeping up with the Jones's" mentality about how much sex you're "supposed" to have. how much ketchup you're supposed to eat, how many times are you supposed to shit a day. What happened with this. I think it's insecure guys that substitute this for in their lives. Insecure guys are always worried about how much sex they have with women, it seems like. Maybe I missed something I don't know.

Guys that feel that they have to keep the tally up or they're getting low, that seems like a form of insecurity to me - I understand it is widely accepted.
Misery and happiness are only states of mind.

Maybe more and more people are taking the bill clinton approach and redefining sex to say 'i did not have sex with that jewess (woman)'

Nervousness is equated with horniness - they run the same biological circuit. Guys that are under or submitting to feminism, cuckold....are nervous, and thus use sex more as a tool, as a way to exorcise angst. I can see it in other guys around. Kradmelder you may just have an unusually high sex drive. I want it, but I'm too lazy to get it often times,
I'd rather just sit there and do work. I dunno.
The nervousness sex thing is a hamster wheel. The healthiest way to be IMo is to be a man and be calm, then your natural sex drive will assert itself naturally.

Ja. It brought a lot of kak into my life until i learnt to curb it and be selective about which women i sleep with. No nutters or true love types.

Sometimes you must limit it to prevent this true love and women thinking now i want a relationship. It is best to find someone with potential, having no sex at first to really see the person. Of it is right then bang away every day.
