Irish emigrants are happier abroad, according to a new poll

If you think the grass is greener someplace else, then here’s some good news: you’re right. A new poll has revealed that Irish emigrants are happier living abroad and are glad they left Ireland when they did.

The Irish Daily Mirror reports a new poll found that 56 per cent of Irish emigrants are much happier with their new lives abroad. It also revealed that most people feel their diet and social life has improved in their new home and that they exercise more.

Of all the people questioned, 70 per cent now think that they have a better quality of life since they took the plunge and left Ireland for foreign climates.

The survey, which was carried out by Ipsos Mrbi/Irish Times, questioned people who had emigrated since 2008 and focussed on their new life abroad in comparison to the life they left behind in Ireland.

However, despite the fact that the majority of people actively voiced their happiness at their new lives abroad, 70 per cent revealed that they would like to move back to Ireland at some point. In most cases the decision to return home would be based on Ireland’s economy and if the country is able to recover from its current debts and financial crises.

A large number of people taking part in the poll said that they felt it would be years before they could come home, with many believing that it would take at least five years for them to return home for good.

The most popular places for Irish emigrants? Well, this is probably a no-brainer, but Australia and New Zealand topped the polls.

“I’m really enjoying my work and have been lucky in that I’ve been able to make plenty of friends. The eastern suburbs of Sydney must surely contain the fastest growing Irish community in the world at the minute,� said one Irish emigrant who was questioned.

“The social scene is also fantastic and we are never stuck for things to do. For me nothing will compensate for the friends’ weddings I’ve missed, the birth of my niece, the Championship days out in Croke Park with my dad, RTE punditry, proper pork sausages,� he added.

It would seem that the British are more open about being Happier Abroad than the Americans are. American sites don't have so many articles about Americans being happier abroad as much.

Is Britain really that bad? It's funny that none of the articles above mention the dating scene or foreign women. Why is that such a taboo subject? Geez. It should be a major one.

Also, why do most blogs moderate comments? That's so cowardly. I don't moderate or censor my blog comments, because I believe in free speech. Allowing both positive and negative comments keeps it real.

This is highly unsurprising. The only good thing about this country is the education system which enables you to eventually get the hell out. The women are the worst in the world and the men are highly egotistical assholes for the most part. I'm really crazy for being a slacker and living off the dole, but I'm just far too comfortable with my current lifestyle to be inspired to go to college and build towards being able to emigrate. Chatting to Asian women daily via the internet and visiting escorts every now and then keeps me relatively contented.

It's funny that none of the articles above mention the dating scene or foreign women. Why is that such a taboo subject? Geez. It should be a major one.

The title is incorrect though, it should be "One third of Irish men are uneducated about foreign women" lol.

The thing I notice on ThaiVisa, PattayaAddicts, TeakDoor, BritishExpats, etc... is that the British, also Irish and Aussie expats, seem livelier, funnier, meaner and cruder than Americans. Like if expats were movies, you would always want to go see the British one.

Also saw photos of English breakfast served in Thai pubs. Serious food porn. And Irish breakfasts even better. Really stuck in mind.

Ah yes, the old English and Irish fry-ups. Heart attack on a plate, but yummy.

Another post that says British expats are happier abroad. But the only reason it cites is that British expats tend to make more money overseas, as if happiness is all about your income. Another dumb corporate zombie site.

Why do they never mention a better dating and social life? Why do other sites never dare to talk about that? As if its such a taboo subject.

The difference between British and Irish immigrants and Americans is the fact that it has always been part of British working class culture to acknowledge that a life overseas - especially in Australia, New Zealand and Canada - was something of a birthright - something that was easily attainable no matter who you were or what skills you had and this has been part of modern history - after the American civil war - there was a mass influx from Great Britain and after the potato famine - a great influx from Ireland and after world war two - millions of Britons went to live in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Rhodesia. In fact - it was as late as 1975 when the Australians stopped giving British immigrants preference over immigrants from places like Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Most Brits have family in Australia, New Zealand and Canada - it is something like 1 in 4 Australians and New Zealanders have a British grandparent, actually my dads family have a lot of family in the States - having cousins, aunties, uncles etc in these countries is very common.

if you compare this to the United States - how many people have family overseas unless their family were recent immigrants themselves? Not that many - especially if those families can trace their families back to living in America a hundred years or so.

The second factor is that a lot of Brits can live in Europe and access their benefits, health care etc the same way as they can in the UK. So, it is a risk free venture - a Brit moving to Spain or Italy is nothing like an American going to the Philippines or Costa Rica - it is a lot safer risk.
