Where did we get the equality idea

That we should be all equal, as arbitrated by some regime, which is a totalitarian idea if you think about it. Just stop with this bullshit.

Lincoln's speech may have done much to advance the concept. But he said all men are created equal.

That's Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence. Of course the statement is stupid and he didn't really believe it. In the context it was probably simply an argument against a hereditary aristocracy.

He was repeating Jefferson, but he gave his speech at the end of the Civil War as they were about to do away with slavery in the South. Jefferson was a slave owner, though. Lincoln was just a white supremicist abolitionist.
