Which countries do people speak Russian outside of Russia?

Post by Winston »

Outside of Russia, I was able to use my basic conversational Russian in the Baltic States and in Poland too.

Are there any other countries in Eastern Europe that I can use Russian in?

What about Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan?

Mongolia! :o Many of the "older" (over 35?) population learned Russian as a second language. :)

If you are in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam you will meet many Russian tourists from Siberia, they cannot speak anything else but Russian.

Many are coming with their families and friends and are quite happy and talkative if they meet foreigners who can speak some Russian too.

Russian speaking Asians ( such as Kazakhs, Kyrghzys and Native Siberians) people are quite exotic. It's kind of normal to see an Asian speaking English, but it's interesting that there are tens of millions of Russian-speaking Asians, too. They speak it as their native language at home.

Kazhakstani's do speak Russian. I met some here recently in Thailand. They are Muslim too.
Been living abroad for 4 years now. India, Nepal, Taiwan, and Thailand. Currently in Thailand teaching English as my bread and butter.
