I discovered this website about Filipino news and culture, which is actually a lot more straight to the point with less bull shit than the traditional media here in the Philippines. Some good articles here by educated, independent Filipino writers and bloggers. I posted a few, feel free to check other articles on the site.

Were we consulted? On the fourth of July, 1946, we sentenced generations of Filipinos to live their entire lives in a country run like hell by their compatriots. How does pride in self-rule stack up to the reality that in the more than 50 years of independence, the majority of Filipinos lived in absolute poverty and countless others suffered, died, or disappeared as a result of the greed and lust for power of our leaders.

Our country is sick in every sense of the word and we are a morally, intellectually, and spiritually bankrupt people. Our virtues, once comforting when invoked, now, at best, point out disturbing ironies about us: packed Sunday masses and images of presidents, mayors and congressmen knelt in prayer, ‘third largest English-speaking country in the world’, ‘where Asia wears a smile’, ‘Asia’s most vibrant democracy’, etcetera, etcetera.

It’s time we face the truth about Filipinos.

Culture is the collective character of a people who have given themselves a collective identity.

What is it about the Filipino character that dooms us to chronic failure at worst or consistent mediocre performance at best? Hang around and find out.

“I would rather have a Philippines run like hell by Filipinos than a Philippines run like heaven by the Americans — Manuel L. Quezon

---Well he certainly got his wish, didn't he?

Most tropical countries, especially those colonized by Latin nations- Spain, Portugal, France. etc are like that. Relaxed and happy go lucky. It has to do with the climate. Most Northern nations are more anal and more disciplined again because of the harsh climate. The only tropical nations that prosper are the ones where the population is originally from colder areas such as Taiwan and Sg.

The author wants the Philippines to start acting like Korea and Japan and the US- in other words changing a Malay/Spanish relaxed culture to make it more Anglo Saxon/Chinese like.

I wish her luck.

I told the guys at my work in Manila about that site. One of them told me there is a similar blog that criticizes the Philippines called Anti Pinoy Blog. Let me see if I can find it.

Oh here it is. Check it out. It looks interesting.

In the presence of foreigners, we Filipinos are often reduced to sheepishly-smiling and highly-accommodating buffoons. No wonder we are touted as a friendly and hospitable people. With the proper attitude and flair, most foreigners can make their way into any Philippine society clique, gain access through any security measure, and secure limelight space in Philippine showbiz generally schmooze their way into the hearts of the political and social elite of the country. For us, mere association with one of them is a validation of our place in our own society. Imelda Marcos was the most famous embodiment of this trait.

With the amount of preferential treatment that is given to foreigners in this country, we are lucky that we haven't yet found ourselves hosts to a new generation of foreign carpetbaggers and opportunists. Yet foreigners get better service at restaurants and banks and are given serious consideration when they raise a stink about anything. Among ourselves, however, complaining about bad service, raising relevant issues, or even standing up for certain principles in a serious manner goes against every principle of our pakikisama mentality and general apathetic disposition.
keep in mind this was written several years ago, probably before Winston got there :P

Apparently, the Anti Pinoy site is by a Filipino American who is angry and disgusted at how things are in the Philippines. Check out these blog posts on it. They are intense and no-holds barred. Mr S would love them.

Stupid might be a compliment… NEANDERTHAL LIKE… Filipinos are monkeys in human jump suits… They may have the features of humans.. but their neurological make up is totally wired like the monkeys they are… the reason for this is basic.. to others, although perhaps to them.. totally distant and alien to there understanding capabilities… They cannot extend their neurological empathetic capabilities to take care of themselves as 1 whole community. It all boils down to this… The will, the determination, all stems from being able to empathise. Its as simple as this.. the only way u can change settings of an environment.. If u can distinguish and be able to realise that theres a need for change.. human nature will bring about change.. ..though filpinos cant do this..the millions and millions suffering.. isnt enough to make them realise.. because simply they cannot.. there thirld world status.. wasnt the doing of somebody else or another nation or an unatural power or reckoning.. they dug that poverty hole themselves.. and now they cant get out..

This is so true.

Just because we write about what ails society does not mean we have to take up the gargantuan task of “helping thousands out of the rut they are in. That is their responsibility, not ours. If everyone learns to help themselves then society will improve. If people self-sacrifice too much for the sake of many, all that will accomplish is having dumb martyrs who are taken advantage of on one side and lazy moochers on the other.

As travelers, we should ask, "Why do they need to be like Korea or China?" If someone is looking for that, go there. I personally like having options, meaning many different and varied types of places to visit and explore. IF they were all the same, why travel?

The article was saying that they could LEARN from the examples of Korea or Japan in how to manage population and resources and become more efficient. The Philippines definitely needs that, but the problem is that the people are always in denial and want to blame others and depend on others. They won't take responsibility for their actions and foolish choices.
