Really? English teaching for whites only in China?
When I saw this, I can't say that I was surprised: http://behindthewall.msnbc.msn.com/_new ... -club?lite
I guess that's because I know that many Chinese people, especially mainlanders, are some of the most prejudiced and bigoted people in the world IMHO.
Damn, Asians just can't catch a break, not even in China.

Asians are brainwashed to be complete white-worshipers! I blame the Jew media for all this...At least North Koreans aren't like this; they reject everything Western--including White people--and are proud to remain racially homogenous. I wish people of color around the world were not so brainwashed to embrace "whiteness" so much...smallcheese wrote:When I saw this, I can't say that I was surprised: http://behindthewall.msnbc.msn.com/_new ... -club?lite

Apparently, China hasn’t discovered political correctness yet. It actually makes sense for a parent to want a stereotype of someone who speaks good English because it is the most reliable way to find someone who speaks good English if you have no other information. The reality is this isn’t always true. The person who did the best in my CELTA class was Thai and she spoke perfect English without any accent. But, how is a parent ever to figure this out? Some of us are also out of luck because China has age discrimination. I once had a Chinese colleague who went to China to try to start up a business because he spoke the language perfectly, but gave up because he said he would have had to violate his business ethics in order to survive.
Only in ESL. But if you want to teach karate, they probably want you to look Japanese. Same with Japanese language.
My spoken Japanese was very fluent way back and my university in Thailand was looking for someone to teach beginning Japanese. I applied and they were laughing-" the students will run away when they see you. Hahaha!"
Be honest. If you were paying for a private school for your kids and wanted them to learn Russian would you be comfortable with a Kazakh teaching them? Someone with a face like this:

Imagine what would have happened if she visited New York City on a hot day and went to Harlem and asked that question.
"Dang woman! Don't worry, for you it's free! No charge! Now come over here and get it."
There's absolutely no doubt that white teachers are preferred as English teachers in China, as well as several other Asian countries. My best explanation as to why: Chinese parents don't believe that their children are getting "authentic" English by learning from someone that isn't white. If their children were to learn English from an African-American, that isn't good enough for them, because in their eyes, English is a white-people language. Sure, many of them would accept a non-white teacher, but many of them would also expect to pay less, because in their mind they're not getting "authentic" English. There's also a face issue about learning English from non-whites. It would be much more impressive for a Chinese parent to tell their neighbors and friends that their child is learning English from a white American than it would be if they said their child was learning English from an African-American or Chinese-American. Bottom line: non-whites aren't "true" English speakers, nor do they give parents face, therefore they aren't preferred as English teachers, and they deserve to be paid less.
I should note that I don't agree with how Chinese parents think. I am just giving an explanation as to what they think about non-white English teachers.

boo FN hoo.
Funny...they told me the same thing...notice how so many here want to disassociate with the US, but totally fall into the American do-gooder judgmental "We need to fix China" attitude. As you and a only few others figured out, the Chinese could give a flying f**k what Americans think about them. They are too busy making sure that their kids speak the international language on their way to getting an advanced degree. Much of the content of this board is testimony to the very poor level of education offered in American public schools, which often produce students who cannot reason their way out of a paper bag.

ladislav you actually made a very good point there.
One would have to earn a good reputation if they don't look or fit the part of an English teacher .... that's sad though I wanted to go to china or macau to teach too. Every bloody season I have a different skin colour lol. Fair in the winter & dark in the summer.
How are the work ethics there? Do they honour their contracts etc?
