My experience in Malacca, Malaysia

Post by Voice of Reason »

I have been in Malacca for ten days.

Malacca seems to be a laid back city, with the non-confrontal nature you see all through Asia. For example, the roads are not aggressive like they are in the west. This is surprising for a Muslim country, I though it would be more repressed than this.

PARANOIA AND FEAR
There is definitely less paranoia and fear than in western society. There doesn't seem to be as many rules and regulation that spoil your fun. People don't seem to be paranoid of being sued, like they do in western society. My friend bought a beer, and could walk in the street drinking it, and this is a muslim country. This says a lot about the ridiculous nature of the rules and regulations in the west, especially when it comes to alcohol.

WOMEN
Overall I found women to be more friendly towards me. I don't know if that's because it's a more friendly society in general, or because I'm white.

One woman openly flirted with me at the mall. It would have bee good to have more women flirt with me, like in countries like the Philippines (So I've heard). But still, one flirtation woman in ten days is a far better record than I had in Australia, where I never had women flirt with me at all.

FEMINISM and GENDER ISSUES
I don't know the extent of the feminist movement in Malaysia. But there doesn't seem to be hatred of men like in the west, and the status of men doesn't seem to be lower than women like in the west.

As an example, there was this guy who cruised around in a sports car playing loud music, and loved to pose to foreigners for photos. He stopped somewhere and was letting people sit in his car to have photos taken. He let both men and women sit in his car, and he was friendly. If this was in the west, he would only let women sit in the car, and he would be some arrogant alpha-jerk.

MUSLIMS
The Muslim women were friendly and always had a smile for me. This contrasts with the arab muslims in the area where I lived, in Australia, of which there were many. Many of the muslims in Australia were extremely arrogant…I used to think that this was due to their religion, but I think western society largely contributes to this attitude as well.

RACIAL ISSUES
I saw many instances of Muslims-Chinese socialising together. Many times, I could not tell who was Muslim or who was non-Muslim. The place was more socially liberal than I thought it would be. Everyone is free to practice their faith. (Having said this there were race riots between Chinese and Malay groups in 1969. I don't know much about this because I haven't researched it. I am just speaking from my experience).

CONCLUSION
Malacca lacks the fear, paranoia and aggression that exists in the west, and hence would be a more pleasant place to live. But if you want women, there are better places in Asia. I think the only way to get women here is to live here long term and establish a network, but again there are probably better places in Asia to live.

(My next destination is in Kuala Lumpur. I don't know how long I'll spend there. It could be a week, or it could be a month).

Yeah, sure!

What types of photos are you looking for? Anything in particular? Or just general photos of my trip?

Most pictures are of scenery, and I have a few of food, plus a few other interesting pictures.

My photos aren't the best yet, as I have only just started this trip, and I am still learning how to take good photos.

I'll post some when I get the chance.

My brother's going to Malaysia in the Autum for a wedding - sounds like he'll like it.

Have you seen any African men there? There's definitely a cell of romance scammers operating somewhere in Malaysia!
I was Happier Abroad for a while but Covid killed that off.

I have seen a very minute number of African men here (I'm in KL atm). But I'm not sure if there tourists or if they live there. Hell, I'm not 100% sure if they are even from Africa. There are a lot of strange looking people here.
