Best local food - Angeles City?

Anything good? Interested in real local food, not crappy pasta or burgers.

Where do the locals eat if they want to go out for good chow? Brisket tagalog, longganisa, tinapa?

Options for breakfast with tapsilog, adosilog etc?

I'm a meat, egg and beginning guy. Not so much noodles and rice.

Look for Jollibee's. Do you like them? They should be in every 3rd-tier and up city in the PHilippines.

On Macarthur Highway, around the corner from Fields Ave there are a number of restaurants serving Filipino food.

One of the best is a new one located opposite the casino which specialises in Filipino seafood dishes. Don't remember the name of the place but it has pictures of the menu choices on the outside. The food there is pretty decent and reasonable value. Service is friendly and efficient and the place is clean and air conditioned.

Had tough dry ribs and flavorless bland vegis at Black Angus.

Couldn't even choke down the hotel food, all time bad.

This place is fun but hurting badly for edible food!

The name of that one place is "Fortune - Honk Kong Seafood". It's seriously awesome, good call.

Good thread. I'm wondering if I'm better off in the Phillies than China.

So what's the food situation like? I've found it incredibly hard to find food I like in China. The fish is full of bones, and they seem to throw the good bits of meat away and eat the offal or the feet.

People say English food is terrible, but a plate of cod and chips is much better than the horrible Carp they serve here!!!

Plus food is generally low quality here, I mean in the supermarket you can buy fruit and veg that's gone off already. They have refrigerators, but they hardly ever turn them on! And a lot of food is just junk, from cheap noodles that are probably made of plaster board, to processed meat that's full of goodness knows what.

I now cook most of my meals. Pasta is easy to cook and I add whatever veggies look most fresh. Plus when it gets hot I think I'll just make soup.

Of all the things about moving abroad, the food at home is what I miss the most.

Regarding China, I love it! Of course my experience is mostly Shanghai and Honk Kong, maybe the country areas suck, but they really know how to cook where I've visited. Had some incredible dim sum and sichwon in SH. Of course they do tend to serve weird body parts, duck tongue etc.

The quality of the meat and freshness of the vegi seems a limitation in Angeles, can't cook good food if you don't start w quality ingredients. It doesn't surprise me the girls are all pudgy in the middle, eating this crap!

This evening's menu at the Outwest cafe in Mindanao:

#1: A light chilled fruit salad- homegrown pineapple and mango slices dripping in sun-ripened sweetness.

#2: Grilled fresh prawns- they were in the water yesterday...lightly seasoned and brushed with
imported New Zealand butter.

#3: Vegetables lightly sauteed in extra-virgin olive oil with a little sea-salt served on a bed of Jasmine rice.

Beverages: Choice of chilled Australian white wines, iced teas, or fresh mango juice from our own trees.

Desert: Choice of mango or coconut ice-cream.

Guests arriving: Wife's parents.


The point is, we eat like kings in the Philippines by the choices we make. When you make a life somewhere and get to know the place, your options expand greatly and the quality of life can be much better. When you are just on a poontang raid to AC I would not expect much, either in the way of women or food. You will get what you pay for...and less.

Loads of street food in China. But I got sick before just from eating fruit bought from the back of a bicycle, so I stay away from it now. Also a couple of Chinese girls I've been with have got sick from eating street meat! Besides you don't know what toxic slag heap the food was grown in. Food quality is a major issue here.

Well I might give it a try now I'm more used to the local bugs.

Some food here is excellent - the baby tomatoes are awesome and incredibly cheap. Oranges too are lovely, although the ones from Hubei seem to have disappeared - maybe they're out of season.

People here don't eat a lot of sugar. But Chinese ladies are thin because they don't eat that much and they walk an awful lot.

Yes I realize that, which is why I've been talking to the locals and asking this board; where is the secret good stuff? I know there must be smart locals eating like kings.

The odd thing is I've not talked to a local yet that had any idea where the good food is located. They seem dazed by the question and direct me to Jollibee LOL. I'll never eat that, not even on a bet. What do THEY eat I wonder? But I get no answers. It's odd, in China or Korea the locals proudly direct me to some famous local joint.

So it's been Fortune Hong Kong every day. Amazing combo plate with every form of protein known to man: pig tongue, stomach, chicken, BBQ pork, eel, egg, on a bed of sea tentacles of some sort. Seafood and vegi baked inside a squash, excellent. Beef cubes and garlic, very tender. Basically everything on the menu is a win.

Just seems odd to be eating HK style instead of local cooking!!

I don't know what, if anything is good around AC. I went there once about 5 years ago to buy a motorcycle and spent maybe 4 hours there...not my kind of place...actually I think all of Metro- Manila sucks, and I fly out of Cebu City on Cathay Pacific to avoid it.
That said, as much as I like some things in the Philippines, good places to eat out are few and far between in my experience here- though there are a few good places to be had. I actually had a pretty decent meal at a restaurant/hotel staffed mostly by deaf school students in Bohol- an interesting story in itself. It is in Jagna, Bohol...one of those little places not likely to be found by those interested in places like AC. In general, I find most Pinoys have a pretty low standard for quality when it comes to restaurant food. Even there, there are surprises to be found...(At your own risk! LOL) like the grandma in CDO that has this little eatery and in her little booth, has some of the best fried chicken to be found anywhere. Her grandson says she marinates it in a mixture of rum, papaya and mango juice. (She just smiles and says NOTHING..) I love people like that...some of these humble and poor who have never the less, made something for themselves, small as it is.
