He had far more issues than simply having a rather unfortunate looking wife. His wife may be as good as what he thought he deserved or perhaps he didn't care much about looks. Example being Daniel Tosh. Confident and arrogant on stage and T.V, but in reality he suffers from severe social anxiety. Its a mask and an act.
Greg Giraldo, John Belushi, Jim Norton, Chris Farley all have either killed themselves and/or admitted to having severe depression and anxiety.
Depression and mental illness screws up a lot of facets of life, relationships and the perception of what you are worth and who you think you deserve can be one of those.
