I got this email from an acquaintance in China. Personally, I think Asian racism and xenophobia is nothing to be ignored or made light of. Just like the Russian racism should not be ignored. Neither white nor yellow people nor black nor brown people should treat others bad based on them looking differently. Anyway, a warning like this is not a joke:
I am posting it here:
Here is most of the text:
"The short version is stay away. Attitudes at the local and national level, have become intensely xenophobic in the past 3 months. China was always like this, but since December it has gotten out of hand.
My friend and I were trailed by Security Forces to my hotel, by professionals who stood outside waiting for him to leave and walk to his home.
Have you ever been tailed by Secret Police...It's not something you want. Ever. Once is enough. If they wanted to run me out of the country they succeeded.
Cameras with IR and motion sensors have been installed just for foreigner abodes, directly infont of their doors to cover their comings and goings - these are in addition to the many cctv cameras that adorn any housing complex. The non-Chinese now get their own monitoring their door ""for their safety"". This happened to my house and the apts of the two other non-Han in my town.
You are watched and commented upon constantly (every 75 seconds), in some towns you are called Laowai (equiv of Nigger) 20 to 30 times per day.
Foreigner registration cards are coming soon in some provinces. This has BAD historical precedent in China. They like to kill foreigners when things get bad. Have in the past, and I did not want to wait around to see how much worse things were going to get. Looks like my instincts were correct, heard from friends there that the registration cards are coming in a month or two.
Starting in January 2015 they have a reward (5000 rmb) that is many month's income for rural workers, to report any foreigner on an overstayed or wrong visa. So when I ate in public I was talked about by everyone and one or two people would call the police and talk about me asking about the reward. It became too much - I could not eat a meal in the town I lived in for 5+ years at my favourite restaurant without being spied upon and reported to the police.
The internet inside the country is broken. From outside I cannot IM or QQ or text friends. Our QQ sessions get cut off constantly. My texts do not make it to them often, and theirs rarely if ever make it to me. Confirmation emails of hotel (outside China hotesl) bookings are blocked
It only works if you spend money on a Chinese website for Chinese products or services inside China. You book a hostel in Kampuchea and you do not get your email confirm. It never arrives. Like my texts to friends.
Even sites inside the country, my local weather, would work infrequently. They have gone back to 1966, Maoism and cult of personality. Time to leave.
When I went through BKK airport, several Mainlanders referred to me as Laowai - in another country! I told them in Chinese that it was unacceptable. They can be racist xenophobes inside China, but I will NOT tolerate that outside of China. No.
Imagine going to Africa and saying ''Wow, look at all the Niggers."" That's the attitude of most Mainlanders to non-Han. In any country. They refer to Thais in Thailand as Laowai. They refer to Americans in the USA as Laowai (foreigners) It's out of control.
Regarding the ESL industry they now (this month, new) require a degree, but you are watched and monitored constantly and the pollution is the worst you will ever see.
If China requires a degree, then why not teach in all of the other nations that pay better and won't kill you with fake food, fake air, fake water and fake medicines?
China, Korea, Thailand all pay comparably and many nations provide free housing. GCC and MENA, Indonesia, etc. Japan is pristine, and you will save more money and not be followed. Some stares, but nothing like China.
The one benefit of China is that your monthly costs are 1/5th of your pay so you can save much.
But the health issues are too high a price to pay, and you are followed and spied upon.
The money is not worth it, and they (now) hate Westerners but want Westerners to teach their kids. Teach my kids, but Western values (that you will represent) cannot be spread. Contradictory mindset.
There is a saying among expats in China;
There are two kinds of expats. Those who have been surrounded by a revenge-seeking Chinese mob, and those who WILL BE surrounded in the future by a revenge-seeking Chinese mob.
I say we leave them to their intolerance, ignorance, hate, xenophobia and violence and stay away, forever''
A brain is a terrible thing to wash!
Chinese chicks love white guys

And the Chinese government is much more open to foreigners than it was decades ago.
Thanks and enjoy
Eh....racism is bad in any country. How about the frat boys in Oklahoma singing about hanging n*ggers, or the report just filed by the Department of Justice, showing just how racist the Ferguson Police Department have been towards the Black population living there: http://rt.com/usa/239845-ferguson-police-chief-resign/
Russia has skinheads, and Europe has seen a rise in Neo-Nazi parties in government. Australia is terrible with racism, too. In Latin America, only the Whites have power, and most dark-skinned people are looked-down upon by the ruling White elite.
In Africa, there is a genocide against White farmers by racist Africans in many countries, which goes unreported in mainstream media. How about what the racist Jews are doing to the Palestinians in Israel? So, sorry to burst your bubble, Ladislav, but I find Asian racism very tame in comparison. And btw, Laowai is not a "racist" word. It just means "foreigner." I've heard overseas Chinese get called that, too, even me. And I take it in stride. I tell them I'm a Korean American, and that just fascinated Chinese people a great deal. Chinese people are really just curious about the world outside of their country. That's all. ...
As an aside, I do see rising racism against White/Black people in Asia--but with the way SOME (I didn't say ALL) foreigners behave here, I can't say I'm surprised. It's just like how some Muslims and Arabs are behaving like idiots in Europe and USA (such as committing terrorist attacks, refusing to assimilate, raping and sexually assaulting White women, and forcing Sharia law on some communities), and then screaming Islamophobia and "racism" when Europeans and Americans get fed-up with their behavior.
Lad, isn't that the same guy who posted here a few weeks ago and quickly got banned for being a troll? Some of that stuff is about word for word of one of his posts on China. Have you been following the forum these days?
lol...That's one of the most fear porn induced retarded post I have read...Even for a guy from third world country...This is too much...
Just another typical..ohh they are coming for you..Bogeyman porn for white people....
Some white people love to create sh**t out of nothing....I have been to china and I never had any issues...
China is far far better than entire europe and north america anyday for a guy..WHO IS educated and Not main stream...
Its just that many people in the west are waking up and wants to move to Asia and they want to stop it with fear porn.
I know personally many Americans who moved to china from US on ESL and they are doing great...
True....The thing is ...western elites are exporting its BS to rest of the world....racism in China is not the same kind that we have in the west...
Besides, racism is real...Only western brainwashed lame stream system..Don't want you to know the truth and believe in fairy tale's in the name of multiculturalism BS....I thoughts its already settled here
Common...I'm not even white and i can smell the BS of multiculturalism in the west..Its only aim is to destroy west
We are Physically same but not spiritually....all race on earth have different evolutionary spiritual cycle....
If we can just accept the facts that we are different ..the world would be at peace and we would all grow spiritually and reach some level of growth in a natural way..
Its forcing everyone to be equal and same in the physical world is the problem...We are all different..The struggle is to be ONE on a Spiritual Plane NOT on a PHYSICAL Plane.....It would be stupid..if a black guy tries to become white and white guy tries to become Asian and Asian guy tries to grow blonde hair and blue eyes...we all will look clowns...
They are making simple concepts as complicated as possible so that we keep fighting each other on stupidity....and Never Grow...
The problem of racial intolerance begins because we were never taught better in school or society..if we knew, race is real...all over the world and that we are all different...This problem would have never existed...
Its like bending nature itself....We can never ever be same ..guaranteed...We will only be same and we are same on a spiritual plane alone not on a physical plane and this western brainwashing agenda wants us to believe in reverse that we all are equal physically as well...hence, the struggle among various racial groups on earth.
Don't fall for the race agenda of the elite to tie down humanity...We are all equal BUT not the same equality they want us all to believe in...
Sounds like fear-mongering. I lived in an a region of China for a year. It was closed off to foreigners, basically. People did strange and rude things - stared, ignored me, referred to me as "laowai" (but not much), etc. People couldn't believe that white people existed. They saw whites on TV, but for one to show up in their city? Unthinkable.
Girls rarely dated foreigners in that region. But most would still giggle if you said "hello" as you passed by on the street.
Never got followed, threatened, or attacked.
I'm planning to go back soon.
Now, I have been reading about crackdowns on those without the proper visas. There are snitch programs out there - a few hundred or thousand RMB for turning in someone staying on the wrong visa. I first read about this on Dave's ESL Cafe. A lot of English teachers in China are fakes, so I think they are mostly the ones affected by this. Reading something like this, I wonder if this isn't a fake teacher bitching.
Racism, be it in a white country, yellow country, brown country, etc. is not pleasant.
Whether you experience it or not or in what amounts depends on many factors. Your own attitude is only a small factor. Other variables are at play. Let's view these hypothetical examples:
If you are a cute Filipina girl living in a nice housing community in S. California and going to a private school, then you will love America and think the people extremely accepting and non racist. If you are a poor Asian refugee man who ends up smack in the middle of a black ghetto in the Bronx or in a redneck town in Texas with gun toting g--k killin' KKK thugs, you may swear that Americans are devil incarnates.
The same goes for an Asian country. It depends on where you end up and what your status is. If you are a university professor in some cosmopolitan university in a big city and live in a high class area, then you will LOVE it. If you are a poor middle aged teacher who ends up in a particularly nationalistic area, then you are sh-t out of luck. If you are an executive for IBM ( China)Ltd, then China is your oyster. Not so if you are a high school graduate who is in China to teach ESL for a pittance and is assigned to their equivalent of a red neck Mississippi trailer park.
And even then, the wild card of luck and who you will run into, who your neighbors are will play its role. This is why people will always say "Oh, but I know friends who love it and who have never had any problems". It's anecdotal. I have friends who have worked in Iraq and came back and everything was OK. It does not mean that being an American in Iraq is a walk in the park. Anecdotes do not prove much.
Many factors are at play here.
As far as labels. For some reason in the US, people do not like to be called Orientals, Ne--oes, and/or " foreigners". But I would never mean anything bad if I called people by such names. Nor do the words mean anything bad per se.
But I don't; and why? Because the people whom you call by such names don't like it. Even if I don't mean anything bad.
