I got this email from an acquaintance in China. Personally, I think Asian racism and xenophobia is nothing to be ignored or made light of. Just like the Russian racism should not be ignored. Neither white nor yellow people nor black nor brown people should treat others bad based on them looking differently. Anyway, a warning like this is not a joke:

"The short version is stay away. Attitudes at the local and national level, have become intensely xenophobic in the past 3 months. China was always like this, but since December it has gotten out of hand.

My friend and I were trailed by Security Forces to my hotel, by professionals who stood outside waiting for him to leave and walk to his home.

Have you ever been tailed by Secret Police...It's not something you want. Ever. Once is enough. If they wanted to run me out of the country they succeeded.

Cameras with IR and motion sensors have been installed just for foreigner abodes, directly infont of their doors to cover their comings and goings - these are in addition to the many cctv cameras that adorn any housing complex. The non-Chinese now get their own monitoring their door ""for their safety"". This happened to my house and the apts of the two other non-Han in my town.

You are watched and commented upon constantly (every 75 seconds), in some towns you are called Laowai (equiv of Nigger) 20 to 30 times per day.

Foreigner registration cards are coming soon in some provinces. This has BAD historical precedent in China. They like to kill foreigners when things get bad. Have in the past, and I did not want to wait around to see how much worse things were going to get. Looks like my instincts were correct, heard from friends there that the registration cards are coming in a month or two.

Starting in January 2015 they have a reward (5000 rmb) that is many month's income for rural workers, to report any foreigner on an overstayed or wrong visa. So when I ate in public I was talked about by everyone and one or two people would call the police and talk about me asking about the reward. It became too much - I could not eat a meal in the town I lived in for 5+ years at my favourite restaurant without being spied upon and reported to the police.

The internet inside the country is broken. From outside I cannot IM or QQ or text friends. Our QQ sessions get cut off constantly. My texts do not make it to them often, and theirs rarely if ever make it to me. Confirmation emails of hotel (outside China hotesl) bookings are blocked

It only works if you spend money on a Chinese website for Chinese products or services inside China. You book a hostel in Kampuchea and you do not get your email confirm. It never arrives. Like my texts to friends.

Even sites inside the country, my local weather, would work infrequently. They have gone back to 1966, Maoism and cult of personality. Time to leave.

When I went through BKK airport, several Mainlanders referred to me as Laowai - in another country! I told them in Chinese that it was unacceptable. They can be racist xenophobes inside China, but I will NOT tolerate that outside of China. No.

Imagine going to Africa and saying ''Wow, look at all the Niggers."" That's the attitude of most Mainlanders to non-Han. In any country. They refer to Thais in Thailand as Laowai. They refer to Americans in the USA as Laowai (foreigners) It's out of control.

Regarding the ESL industry they now (this month, new) require a degree, but you are watched and monitored constantly and the pollution is the worst you will ever see.

If China requires a degree, then why not teach in all of the other nations that pay better and won't kill you with fake food, fake air, fake water and fake medicines?

China, Korea, Thailand all pay comparably and many nations provide free housing. GCC and MENA, Indonesia, etc. Japan is pristine, and you will save more money and not be followed. Some stares, but nothing like China.

The one benefit of China is that your monthly costs are 1/5th of your pay so you can save much.

But the health issues are too high a price to pay, and you are followed and spied upon.

The money is not worth it, and they (now) hate Westerners but want Westerners to teach their kids. Teach my kids, but Western values (that you will represent) cannot be spread. Contradictory mindset.

As an aside, I do see rising racism against White/Black people in Asia--but with the way SOME (I didn't say ALL) foreigners behave here, I can't say I'm surprised. Racism, be it in a white country, yellow country, brown country, etc. is not pleasant.

Whether you experience it or not or in what amounts depends on many factors. Your own attitude is only a small factor. Other variables are at play. Let's view these hypothetical examples:

If you are a cute Filipina girl living in a nice housing community in S. California and going to a private school, then you will love America and think the people extremely accepting and non racist. If you are a poor Asian refugee man who ends up smack in the middle of a black ghetto in the Bronx or in a redneck town in Texas with gun toting g--k killin' KKK thugs, you may swear that Americans are devil incarnates.

The same goes for an Asian country. It depends on where you end up and what your status is. If you are a university professor in some cosmopolitan university in a big city and live in a high class area, then you will LOVE it. If you are a poor middle aged teacher who ends up in a particularly nationalistic area, then you are sh-t out of luck. If you are an executive for IBM ( China)Ltd, then China is your oyster. Not so if you are a high school graduate who is in China to teach ESL for a pittance and is assigned to their equivalent of a red neck Mississippi trailer park.

And even then, the wild card of luck and who you will run into, who your neighbors are will play its role. This is why people will always say "Oh, but I know friends who love it and who have never had any problems". It's anecdotal. I have friends who have worked in Iraq and came back and everything was OK. It does not mean that being an American in Iraq is a walk in the park. Anecdotes do not prove much.

Many factors are at play here.

As far as labels. For some reason in the US, people do not like to be called Orientals, Ne--oes, and/or " foreigners". But I would never mean anything bad if I called people by such names. Nor do the words mean anything bad per se.

But I don't; and why? Because the people whom you call by such names don't like it. Even if I don't mean anything bad.
