Why do Filipinas assume all foreigners are Santa Claus?

Postby Winston » Wed Dec 17, 2008 7:52 pm

The other day, in a cheap discount small mall, I flirted with this hot white skinned Filipina behind the counter. Suddenly, four of her coworkers nearby started smiling and rushed to me, and then started asking me to buy them these huge expensive chocolate bars in their own kiosks that they were dying to eat! And the girl I liked kept urging me to buy her coworkers whatever they wanted, even though I didn't know them and wasn't interested in them.

Having experienced this countless times over the last two years, I didn't bother to even react. But eventually I had to tell them that I wasn't Santa Claus, and that I was talking to the girl because I was interested in her, not because I wanted to waste money buying things for random strangers. I also told them that I don't buy things for girls until I got to know them first. And that I am not a Santa who gives free gifts to everyone.

For some reason, just because I speak English, these lowly poor girls automatically think that I am Santa coming to grant them free gifts for the asking, even though I look nothing like Santa Claus. It was totally weird and illogical. When I calmly told them the truth, and that their requests for free expensive chocolate from me had nothing to do with my purpose and intention in trying to pick up the hot girl at the counter, they looked a little shocked, as though I had upset the order of their universe. One even used the go away hand gesture and said "Argh! This guy is useless!" even though it was never my intention to be "useful" to them.

After that, I tried to get down to business and asked the girl out, since that was my intention and purpose in talking to her. She agreed to meet up with me later after a work meeting. But as I expected, she flaked out and only texted me asking for a load, but after I passed her a small load, she never texted me again to tell me she was free to meet as she promised. Obviously she was playing games, not interested in getting to know me, but only in getting free things for her friends. I'm sure glad I didn't waste any of my money, since even if I had bought expensive chocolates for everyone, it would have gone nowhere.

But the thing is, I don't know where they got this delusion from that all foreigners are Santa Clauses who give free gifts, cash and meals to anyone for the asking. The Filipino media doesn't tell them that. Their TV news doesn't tell them that. Their schools and governments don't tell them that. So WHO tells them this exactly?

Your right, the fact that you speak english tells these girls, you might be a rich foreigner who can buy them things. Maybe they get this idea from watching movies and tv shows, that show rich english speaking guys being able to buy expensive gifts for women. Either way, don't buy them anything, if they need something bad enough, let them buy it for themselves! :D

W: But the point is, even if I'm rich, it doesn't mean that I want to give out free things to everyone. Not even rich people do that, and if they did, they wouldn't be rich anymore. Not even Bill Gates does that. Sure he could afford to, but then millions would line up to get more and he'd be wasting his time. And besides, no one likes to feel that another is telling him what to buy as though he were being told what to buy and what to do, as though he were being controlled.

These girls falsely assume that rich people like to splurge and spend all their money quickly until they are broke, as though money were something extra and not necessary. In real life, people of average intelligence and rich people do not do that.

How would you respond in such situations JamesBond?

I would say the same thing you told those girls, that you are not santa and cannot afford to just spend money on girls THAT YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW! It's not like you are dating any of these girls, why in the hell should you buy gifts for them!

Personally, I'd tell them I'm an individualist and feminist who values friendship and fairness. :)

Remember this thread, entitled "Freedom From Social Restrictions"? Let the compatible people gravitate toward you, and vice-versa.

Thus far in Chongqing, not one woman has asked me to buy her something. They're much more interested in making friends with new people, instead!

Since your question is 'why', here is 'why'.
1) Rich people in the RP ( as well as most so called developing)nations do not mingle with the poor or ever help them. If they did, they would be taken over by storm and deprived of their wealth with 40 million poor beating a path to their door. They know that if you give the poor an inch, they take a mile. Classes are separated and do not mingle.
2) The Spaniards deprived the natives of dignity and self respect by telling them how worthless they were and by oppressing them. They sucked their blood and turned them into uneducated peons, deprived of hope. They also did not give the natives anything except illegitimate kids.
3) A miracle happens- enter the Kanos ( Mirkanos)- Americans, and these are incredible- they mingle with the poor, do not care about class, help everyone and give out change on the streets. Kids run after the liberators- Americans ,after having heard the amazing news- there are these white creatures in town, loaded with money, they are all smiles, make friends with everyone and even give out free change. They marry poor women, even bar girls. They even help families buy houses and bufallos. They say to everyone- "Hello my friend" and smile. This is how friendly GI Joes are. And their money is worth so much! And they do not mind giving full dollars on the streets? Who are these money-distributing Boddhisattvas? Who are these selfless demigods. Is there really a Santa Clause? Yes, there is- a money - giving, jovial, swaggering and informal American GI Joe. How do you spot them? They are white, have long noses and speak English. They must come from the land where money flows in mighty rivers, for no one, no one in the country has been that generous up until now.
Guess what else?- anyone who speaks English is therefore a resident of that marvelous land where streets are paved with gold and where money fills rivers and lakes and falls from the clouds. So what if he is not white? Maybe he has been there a long time, long enough to fill his pockets with trillions of dollars, and now he will do the same- give it to the poor. Just like the strutting GIs that would give out small coins and even bills on the streets during all these wars and married poor girls.

Oh my! I can't believe it. Here comes another one! Let's ask him for money!

But Ladislav, the point is, only a minority of white guys are Santa Claus givers to everyone here. Most foreign guys I know here are frugal and defensive about getting used. The majority do not fit the Santa foreigner stereotype. So don't they realize by now that the stereotype is false?

Ah, you 've missed the glory days of the US military presence in the RP. The WWII, the VN War, the hundreds of thousands of young GIs, sailors and airmen in the country. The loud, the friendly, the young types who were there for R&R or stationed for a short time and who were giving out money for decades, marrying hookers and engaging in other altruistic behaviour. They were getting paid in dollars, taking girls out and buying them things. Especially during the wars they would splurge like crazy and spend their combat pay on everyone there because 1) Americans usually do not have to support enormous families back home 2) They knew that this could be their last time to enjoy life on Earth as they were off to combat the following week.

Their memory lives on!

The stooped-down, $800-a-month, decrepit retirees are a new breed altogether, and they still cannot live down the glory of the good ol' GI days.

Ladislav got it all right down to a point... the way I see it Winston is you need to get interested more in the history of the place you live in... if you really are interested in the reasons and logic of what is going on NOW around you, dive deep into their PAST... that is if you're really interested in finding out the answers and not just looking for something to bitch or rant about...
the true path is really no path

"As I expected"?

This implies that this has been a fairly regularly occurrence for you.

Just how successful have you been with girls OUTSIDE the bar scene in the Philippines?

W: I wouldn't say regular occurrence. It's just that when you've met and dated many women, you pick up a skill where you can read their intentions and predict their actions based on their body language, vibes, and other clues. And in this case, I could see that since she was urging me to waste money buying expensive chocolate for her unattractive coworkers that I had no interest in, that she was not interested in me and just helping them use me for fun.

I was doing ok with the dating scene outside the bar scene, but after Dianne erased all my numbers, and the girls now being more spoiled than before, I'd have to say not as well.

Still, it's a numbers game and if I went out all the time, I'd meet a lot of different people, but I don't have much energy for such things.

I sometimes take the opportunity to talk to an attractive girl I see, because it gives me a thrill and a high, and makes my life exciting, but that's something I do along the way.

Don't forget, outside the bar scene there are many normal girls who are poor who like foreigners too. So they are friendly to me as well. But they move slowly and are not as quick on the "give me money for sex" or "give me free money with no strings attached just for the asking" thing.

Have you heard of Cargo Cults? This is a similar phenomenon and although not exactly the same, it explains to you how the belief that all foreigners are Santas originates in similar, Pacific cultures.
