This is pretty f***ed up. I wonder if all of ASEAN will be forced to do this after 2015? That would rule out any SE Asian country for guys over 50. They would have a hard time getting regular girls to date them unless they were promising an overseas marriage down the road. There would be more pay for play, that's for sure. Stupid politicians and radical feminism always trying to ruin a good thing...

Law prohibiting marriage to foreigners over the age of 50 proposed to Thai Cabinet

BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Interior are bringing a new proposal before the Cabinet prohibiting foreigners over the age of 50 from marrying Thai nationals.

According to a Ministry spokesperson, statistics show that many older foreigners are marrying much younger Thai women, which is not appropriate and often leads to many problems.

"Many older foreigners seem to marry Thai women so they can stay in Thailand under less strict requirements. Instead of needing to meet the requirements of 800,000 baht in the bank they only have to show 400,000 baht a year when married to a Thai. Additionally, many of these people seem to come to Thailand simply to marry much younger girls. In many cases they are old enough to be their father. I am concerned that these people are attempting to circumvent the rules by marrying innocent Thai women. If these people don't have enough money to retire then they shouldn't be here and become a burden to Thailand," Tawatchai Suksoom of the Ministry of Interior stated.

He added that the measure is not discriminatory as it will apply to both men and women, but admitted that the proposal would mainly affect Thai women and foreign men.

Thai nationals cannot be prohibited from marrying older foreigners abroad, however Thai embassies will warn them of the possibility that Thailand will not recognize the marriage if they return to Thailand, he noted.

It is expected that the new law will be brought before the Cabinet for approval at the beginning of next month where it will then be proposed to Parliament. The law will not apply retroactively but only to marriages that take place after the new law comes into effect. Tawatchai advised Thais living overseas to provide proof to their Embassies that they were married before the law came into effect so as to avoid any potential problems.

The new law is in line with similar laws in Cambodia and Laos as part of the upcoming ASEAN integration in 2015 and is expected to pass Parliament with ease and should take effect on May 1st, 2011.

If this happens in all ASEAN countries and you still wanna find an Asian wife from the region after 50, you could:

1. Date her in her country

2. Eventually return to States to apply for fiancee visa

3. Bring her over and marry her in States

4. If you wish, go back and live in her country as 2 people who are technically single. As for land purchases in her name, etc., it really isn't much different. Even the country you are in recognizes your marriage, you have little protection if she decides to abandon you and keep all the assets in her name, at least in Thailand.

The proposal seems especially unreasonable for guys over 50 who wanna marry a local close to their own age.

why not instead simply increase the money in the bank requirement for foreigners who marry Thai girls to 800,000, the same as for single guys?

I guess if they were really worried about age differences then they could just pass a law saying there can't be so many years between someone over 50. Like more than 15 years or something. Just another example of how Thailand really just wants our money, they could care less about foreigners contributing to their country, even if it is positive.

Also, I think the frequent sight of old out of shape foreigner guys hand-in-hand with butt ugly country girls all over the prime spots of Bangkok disgusts a large percentage of city folk. I have to admit, it can be a real eyesore at times.

Going back to the US isn't that simple either because of the increasing restrictions of IMBRA. If you have been divorced once, IMBRA makes it harder to get another fiancée visa in the US. And now you can only have a maximum of two. So you better make the right choice the first time. And you also have to fulfill the requirements of the affidavit of support and have a job in the US. The feminists really hate us and want to destroy us and they intend to get these laws passed in every country under the pretext of human rights (the Cambodia law was promoted by the Human Rights NGO Licadho). There is nowhere to run. But, notice that they don't do anything to go after the real gangsters who are trafficking women, instead they want to destroy the sincere man who is actually willing to get married. It's the men who want to be the most responsible who are being targeted. Maybe another option is Indonesia because it is Muslim and Muslims are still actively opposing feminist laws. Also, this makes Latin America more appealing. But, the reality is these groups have targeted the entire world for their restrictions on freedom and domination of our lives. This is all happening so fast. The Thailand law would go in effect 2011. Does anyone know if any laws are pending in the Philippines? The "2015" would definitely be a date to watch.

Yes, very interesting that the new Cambodian law only applies to over 50 males, cougars get a complete pass. Not that many would probably go for Cambodians though given the large list of more interesting countries they can go to for these types of relationships.
