There's really nothing that you can militarily threaten the Russians with in a regional conflict at their doorstep. Economically, the EU is Russia's largest trading partner, but any EU sanctions need to consider that they also import their oil and gas from Russia.
Yeah, I think Taco's just having fun with us with all the doomsday stuff. That a** Kerry is determined to top himself in ridiculousness every time he opens his mouth, but even he doesn't get anywhere close to Taco's inference in the linked story. Putin holds all the cards, and everybody knows it (except maybe Obama, who seems as clueless as a nominal head of state can get).

They wouldn't go to war over a silly law like that. Sounds like an excuse. What's wrong with documents in Russian anyway?

One of our forum members is there in Crimea now. He doesn't want me to mention him though, until after his trip when he posts a trip report. He is with a great girl that treats him like a real man and is with a real gem and keeper herself.

He said that he's had no trouble there. He's seen troops with machine guns, but they don't bother him. Let's hope he is safe.

The motion for Crimea to join Russia just passed today. It looks like they start using the Russian Ruble starting April 1. US Congress can't impose economic sanctions until at least March 24 that's when they get back from holidays, so we won't know much until next week.

It's over. Obama realized he held no cards and has agreed to Russia's proposal for resolving the matter -- basically a strongly federal system in which each Ukrainian province has significant autonomy, even perhaps to the point of making their own deals with different countries and trading blocs.

Crimea will become part of Russia, per the wishes of 96.8 percent of the 85 percent who turned out to vote. Imagine a turnout like that for a U.S. election or referendum -- I know it's taxing the imagination too much.

Just like in Syria, Obama and Kerry are already trying to claim it's their idea, and insisting that Russia comply. What a farce, but Putin is happy to let them play their little PR games. Putin has eaten Obama's lunch again, given him a chance to save face, and the world is better off for it.

The recent "democratic solution" means that Crimea has been annexed by Russia.

Crimea was never an issue, most people who live there are ethnic Russians who have right to self-determination.

Self-determination is legal right that is protected by UN charter so I dont know why US and West are so upset, well, I know why but common, they used the same principle when US supported Kosovo to breakaway from Serbia. They even bombed the country for 3 months, now they should bomb Ukraine for not letting Crimeans go:)

Don't forget that democratically elected government of Ukraine was overthrown by armed men who used snipers to kill security forces(engineered and orchestrated by the West), wonder what would happen if Americans start shooting cops on the street of New York?:)

Question is what is gonna happen to Eastern Ukraine?

Don't fall for fake left - right paradigm....America and Russia are BFF

Both US & Russia are the Good Cop, Bad Cop for human race..Whenever they want to destroy a country they come from opposite sides in the name of Communism/Democracy – Socialism/Capitalism aka any opposite ideologies with a common ground on Freedom. This is the same tactic they used for over 100 years now, since they were both created by the Banksters centuries ago for Divide & Conquer.

List of countries they have divided and ruled and butchered millions of local population.

1. Germany

2. Korea

3. Balkans

4. Combodia

5. Vietnam

6. Yugoslavia

7. Afghanistan

8. Libya

9. Syria

and now

10. Ukraine

Is their any doubt looking at the past history of these two countries involved in so called peace and freedom of its local population and then murdering millions and quietly leaving the scene as Russia has done often in the past with America staying to butcher more.

Good Cop = America

Bad Cop = Russia....& Vice Versa...They reverse the role according to the country they want to butcher in.

---

Do you really think the government ever cares for people... not in crimea not in America not in China not in North Korea...

Expect...now for few crude bombs to go off in Crimea for the excuse to be put on "Separatist movement" ...Perfect recipe for civil war....

The losers are already determined in Ukraine, Russia

Humanity = Zero

Elite = 1

As I've said previously, any EU sanctions need to consider that they import oil and gas from Russia.

I forgot to also mention that Ukraine gets its energy supply from Russia as well. Approx. 70-75% of Ukraine's gas and 80% of its oil is imported from Russia.

If Ukraine gets into an armed conflict with Russia, the first thing that gets cut-off is the pipelines.

If the EU moves to reduce its reliance on Russian gas and oil, I'm sure the Chinese and Japanese are happy to buy.

I found this map that clearly shows the ethnic breakdown of the Ukraine. It becomes obvious why Russia would want to claim Crimea.

What is wrong with this chart?

Why is "25% - 74%" a category and labelled in red?

If the goal is to show "majority Ukrainian speakers" vs "majority Russian speakers", why would you use 25% to 74% as a single category?

Crimea is an autonomous province but it has no constitutional right to declare independence or join Russia. It was all a sham. The Russians brought in a stooge to head the referendum from a party that had only won 4% of votes before. The Tatars and the Ukrainians ignored the referendum.

About the maps. Many are Russian made and Americans just lap them up. You have to live in Russia to see how shamelessly they lie and distort things in their propaganda campaigns.

The Russians also conveniently include "Russian speakers" with the real ethnic Russians when it suits them to inflate the numbers. When it doesn't, they immediately declare only blond people with names ending in -ov or -in as ethnic Russians.

All Ukrainians can speak Russian fluently and 90 percent of Kiev speak Russian although it is only 10 percent Russian ethnically. Russian is a colonial language. The map shows preference by language, not the actual number of ethnic members of the Russian minority.

In Ireland, people prefer to speak English although some prefer to speak Gaelic. I wonder what a map there would look like. But no one is his right mind would count some Paddy O'Neil as an ethnic Englishman because he speaks English. Imagine if England declared people in Dublin as "ethnic brethren" just because they prefer to speak English, and invade to save them from Gaelic nationalists in the West. That's what Russia is doing.

The ethnic Russians are in Crimea and they are about 60% of the population -- this much is true--because Stalin had kicked out the Tatars and brought the Russians in. When they started complaining about neglect, Khrushchev dumped them on Ukraine to administer them. At that time Ukraine was very wealthy and it built everything in the Crimea.

They had voted for Ukrainian independence in 1991- all was nice and dandy. So what gives now?

The real reason they voted for joining Russia was because they think their salaries will now go up as well as pensions. Yanukovich turned Ukraine, the richest Soviet republic, into a third world sh-thole poorer than El Salvador and more corrupt than Nigeria. Russia seems way better by comparison.

Their attraction to gaijin women is limited to manga and some closet masturbation. They are not going to Crimea to talk to that girl. Because they are not confident of their English ( which the Crimean Russians cannot speak at all, by the way).

Which Ukrainian constitution is that, which forbids Crimean independence -- the one reinstated at the point of a gun during the violent coup?

Whoever may have sat out the Crimean referendum on independence, the total turnout to vote was 85 percent. Are you disputing that? And of course, the vote was 97 percent in favor of rejoining Russia. Are you saying that there has not been a clear expression of the will of the Crimean people in this vote?

Russia invaded Crimea? Their contract with Ukraine allows them to have 25,000 troops in Sevastopol. Putin denies that there are more than that there now. Are you disputing him? Kind of a funny "invasion" that involves no shots being fired by the "invaders."

Yanukovych is just the latest kleptocrat to loot Ukraine, and hardly brought the country down by himself. Putin despises him.
