The Myth of Filipino Inferiority
By: Arthur Hu, Oct 30, 2008

I thank Rodel Rodis for bringing up the sub-par performance of Filipino students. It is unfortunate that it is politically correct to dramatize disadvantaged losers rather than celebrate positive achievement.
Standardized tests like the Washington state Assessment of Student Learning show the fraud of either passing all students to prove that spending money works or flunking above-average students to justify spending even more money.

I ran my own reports on the California Education Departments STAR testing website and found the statewide Filipino average of 320 for basic math at grade 9 was about equal to the Asian average. They joined the disadvantaged Hawaiians, Guamanians, Tahitians, and Vietnamese in actually outscoring whites at 315. They didnt perform as high as 334 for Chinese, but then neither did whites. The bottom line is that the Koreans put everybody else to shame at 330, but is that a crisis?

Samoans and Cambodians were the lowest-scoring Asian groups, but 33% of Samoans scored far below basic, just as poor a showing as the traditionally highlighted African Americans. For all the awards won by Asian Indian students, on this test they barely kept up with whites, scoring far below basic at 18 percent.

Im the guy who filed a complaint that the University of California gave Filipinos affirmative admission rates in the 1980s when they were never underrepresented in UC admissions. Likewise, no one else told the story that Filipinos were later quietly removed from preferences and subjected to lower admission rates than other groups.

Tax the Rich, Give To the Working Class

Inequality should never justify massive spending to promise a more equitable distribution of wealth or high test scores. Joe the Plumber was told by Obama Hood that its good to spread the wealth around. What kind of a tax cut nakedly promises to raise business taxes to hand out checks to people who may not even owe taxes? In a 2001 radio interview, Obama explained the redistributive change that we are now supposed to believe in.

Glenn Beck thinks McCain is what Democrats used to be and Obama is what we used to call socialist. Sarah Palin may well be the one candidate pure enough to have faith in. The pundits condemn firings, expense accounts, religious beliefs, answers to questions with no correct answers, and opposition to abortion. But Palin and McCain never called America a force of evil at Saddleback Church, nor wrote college theses concluding that America hates black Americans, nor had to deny the religious heritage of their fathers. They dont have to distance themselves from retired building bombers or appointing the very Fannie Mae former executives he claimed to blow the whistle on. Obama has clearly succeeded in making a scapegoat of Bush, and perhaps has won the political beauty contest among Asians. But it is not too late to vote based on integrity and figure out whose character is the one lacking in content.

Great results by Filipinos in the United States. Ditto for Koreans and Chinese. Most of these would not be given US visas if they were average people from the rank-and-file population of their countries. Only the bright ones are allowed to come. Or the rich ones, and then their kids are enrolled in good schools, etc.
Whites or Blacks, though, represent real cross sections of the population, hence they scored lower than the creme of the crop pickings of the best and the brightest of Asia who are now in the USA.
Would be nice to see the results of Filipinos in Philippine schools- average people as compared to the results of average Joes in the US. Not foreign students or immigrants or children thereof.
Same in Oz. Look at Sydney streets. Who is walking down those? Rich Asians- well dressed, buying $150 ties at local department stores. Creme of the crop. Contrast those elites to the average Aussie who runs the full gamut but generally is just a middle class Joe, as well.

And Hispanics would score even lower on the scale, and do you know why? They represent the lowest classes who had to migrate to become fruit pickers. Their parents are happy these were able to finish high school, something their Aztec ancestors were not able to do for millenia.
Rich/smart Hispanics seldom come to the US. They are happy to send their kids to Europe or educate them at home. These do not enter into scores.

Another example of the US misconception of:

Filipino American = Filipino
US statistics equal the world truth.

Plus, why are so many Filipinos around me incapable of giving decent directions, exercising common sense, answering simple questions. And why is cooking so bad and sometimes God awful here?

Momopi, if you came here and walked around with me for a while and interact with lots of people, you'll see what I mean. It's like analytical thought is unnatural here.

Most people in stores here don't even know what's in their store. I should take you to ace hardware, momopi, and show you how I can find something in 5 minutes that the staff there say they don't carry. Happens all the time!

Still, Filipinos do seem good at certain things like chess and remembering your face even if you don't remember theirs.

I'd suggest reading into Filipino history.
Maybe that'll help you understand Filipino culture.

I read your article on how Filipinos seem more 'Buddhist' or 'Hindu' even though they are Latin-rite Catholic. The Phillipines has been under Malay Hindu and Moslem influence as well as Chinese influence prior to Spanish colonization. But just go on wikipedia and research Filipino history.[/quote]

Excellent advice but a bit off topic. Here we have a discussion about alleged inferiority in academic achievement. The article says Filipinos are very good at academic subjects and test quite high. However, there is a big fallacy permeating the whole thing and that is: the data given is for Filipinos who are in the US and these are either the richest or the smartest. For an average Filipino student going to the US is about as easy as for an average American to go to the Moon. Only the absolutely brightest are allowed to get a visa.

The average IQ in the Philippines is 86. HK is 107. Korea is 106. Singapore 100. Even Indonesia and Cambodia scored higher on IQ tests.
But Filipinos in the US appear smarter than Cambodians because the latter came as refugees and were just peasants for the most part while the Filipinos seem to be either US born and educated or the smartest picks from their countries.

The USA average IQ is 98

Philippine universities are no longer the top in Asia as they used to be. There is a big talk in the government in the country about how the educational standards are slipping.

Fancy reading a self congratulatory article about the performance of US based Pinoys to give a crumbling educational system in the RP an ego boost.

http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2006/ARWU2006_TopAsia.htm

Take just daily situations- take a taxi in Japan. It is equipped with GPS, the driver reads a map and delivers you with great precision to your destination. Exact change is given to you from a coin dispenser with a receipt. In the Philippines many a driver has a 6 grade education, does not know his own city and can get a license even without going to a driving school. They often do not know where places are located in their own town!

Ditto Thailand. A daily fight with unintelligent taxi drivers.

Plus just look at countries. Which countries are the bosses? Which make ships, produce electronics, make best cars, airplanes. You will see which ones are inferior or superior ( in terms of modern achievements).
And it all starts with academic performance at schools in the country ( not at US schools).

This is a great discussion thread.

May I suggest everyone to watch the movie "Idiocracy"? ;)

Wraith, understanding Filipino history isn't going to explain why the average IQ here is 86 or why so many have no common sense and can't even give proper directions or why thoughts are abnormal here. Nor is it going to explain why the retail workers at Ace Hardware here keep giving out false info, saying they don't carry something when they do, which a casual glance around will reveal.

Momopi, I saw the movie Idiocracy, and it was amusing. But the recent Disney movie Wall-E, which was wonderful, also depicted how humankind may become in the future if things continue to progress the way they do.

Ladislav, get this.

Last night this girl kept texting me, but wouldn't explain how she got my number or who she was. Instead, she kept wanting to meet me and wanted to come over and wasted lots of texts on me, a total stranger supposedly. I texted her this morning that I do not go meeting random strangers who text me without a good reason, and that she had given me none, so it was illogical for her to expect me to waste my time meeting a random stranger. Why would anyone waste such time? It makes no sense. I get the sense that some people here love wasting their time and cell phone load on a total stranger. That baffles me.

Also add to this the fact that many people here somehow think that foreigners are willing to give out free cash and free loans to anyone who asks. This one has always baffled me. In the real world, not even the super rich give out money and free loans to anyone who asks. Rich Filipinos don't do that, nor do rich banks and corporations here. So why would foreigners hand out free cash casually to anyone? That assumption makes no sense. Not even Bill Gates hands out free cash to every random person who wants some, even though he could afford to do so. If he did, then millions of people would be lining up outside his home to get free cash. That is unrealistic.

Does the low IQ of people here cause such strange behaviors?

When you get asked for free cash or free loans, do you just say "no" or do you try to educate them that "in the real world, people do not give out free cash or loans without collateral, especially to strangers". But if you say that, what will they think? Is it rude?

I don't get why the President of this country or someone with power in the media here, doesn't go on national TV and explain to the whole population that foreigners do not give out free cash to anyone for the asking. Why perpetuate such a stereotype? Trying to combat it is like trying to fight all the endless numbers of ants that crawl into your house. After a while, it feels futile. I wonder why they can't just de-program and de-brainwash the population so they would stop believing illusions?
