The suggestions some people make are funny. The majority of Americans are not self-starters. They need to be told what to do, sheep mentality I guess.

There are some self-starters, they have blogs, they share their knowledge of defeating unemployment and defeating family debt. Between all the automation and additional people in the job market, yes there will be a tipping point where the Government will have to pay people to stay home and not work.

Some economist lament the fact that SSI-D rules have been relaxed, making it easier to qualify for benefits for mental issues. But I am sure that is a calculation by some in government that see the long term trends in unemployment as many who have filed recently are in fact those that have maxed their unemployment benefits.

Going to school expecting to work for somebody is not how things will be done going forward. Even in a Resources based economy the amount of workers actually in the economy would be small. Eve the world population is 7 Billion and likely top 7.5 Billion in our lifetimes, there will never be enough "jobs" for everybody which means you'll need to find your own way to earn money. If you can't earn money then the Government will give you money to spend in the economy.
