Forget Starbucks. Chile's coffee shops are more like strip joints. There businessmen are served their morning lattes by scantily clad girls. It's unashamedly sexist and very, very popular.
The Cafés con piernas, or 'coffee with legs' have become a Chilean institution. They serve no alcohol or food and close at night. But from the moment they enter, men are fawned over by pretty, lingerie clad waitresses. Little wonder they make so much money. But a version for Chilean businesswomen failed. These are bikini coffee bars, not strip joints. We have um... couple dozen of these in central Orange County, mostly operated by Vietnamese owners. For about $30k-$50k you can open one yourself. Business and competition is tough (too many hands in the cookie jar). Years ago the best cafe's paid >$20/hr plus beneefits to the girls, including breast implants if they signed contract to stay for at least xx months. Now the wages have fallen to $12-$18/hr and girls hop between cafe's a lot.
