I teach English and translate but because I have a full time job, I do it sparingly now. If I do it full time, I make about $1300 -1800 a month. I wrote a book on how to do and if you still have not requested one from me. PM me your email and I will send you a free copy.

Companies want and need to control you, because if you work from home, you are not defined to having someone breathing down your neck.
By you working at home, YOU are the one in control.
What's wrong with that? As long as you get the job done, what does it matter? It depends on the work I guess. When I worked for the Korean gaming company in Manila, my work was "take home work" with a meeting once a week in the office. More companies in America should do that, if they haven't outsourced their jobs that is. lol

It's about $1800 a month now. I don't do any freelance work on the side.

Yes, I've been an IT guy for 15 years now and have done work for many household names including Pepsi  .

Newbies can make good money on the internet, but it's more luck than anything. Kind of like winning the lottery, but with slightly better odds. For every 50K a month Smart Passive Income Pat there are 100,000 people with make money blogs that get 2-3 visitors a day and make $2-3 a month.

It's much harder now, with so many niches being saturated, plus Google being super-choosy on what it indexes. Winston is making good money from HA, but if Google has a hissy fit and deindexes the site then that's all his best traffic gone  .

GenYguy thats a broad questions and really depends on what route you want to go down and your current assets.
Do you already have job that could be done online?

Most officeworkers sit in front of a computer all day anyway, so there is no reason not to do it online which frees you up to work from anywhere in the world. This is what got me started I just asked my boss to work from home and now I havent been into an office for over 1,5 years.

If you dont have a job right now or dont have a job that qualifies for online-work then you could start freelancing. There are sites like elance and odesk where you can build up a nice profile and do all kinds of work. For some you dont even need specific skills, for example I used to do some website testing, mobile app testing and and worked for a google subcontractor that verifies their search results (basically you have to check if search results match up with the search terms). All these can be found on the online boards I mentioned, require no specific skills and pay around 15 dollars / hour.

You seem to be a native English speaker so you could also look into English teaching/tutoring online. If you speak a second language you could do translation jobs. You can also write SEO articles or if you can code, do webdesign, videoediting, graphicdesign you can find jobs for all these skills on the online job boards too.

In terms of qualifications you dont need anything really. You can start up with some lower paid projects, get good ratings and work your way up. I did a project this month for around 130 dollars per hour from elance and I got no qualifications at all, just worked my way up.

Good luck and if you have more questions let me know!

Thanks man, you've inspired me now!

My thread goes more into it, but in short, no I don't have a job, or job experience for that matter. No degree either, just a GED. I do have a lot of free time though that I want to put to use somehow. Elance and odesk sound good, if I can find 15 dollar/hour work that doesn't require any serious skills (because other than being very familiar with the internet, I don't have any lol).

I do know a tiny bit about SEO, I'm a beginner in it, because I'm trying to create a website where I can do affiliate marketing. SEO is interesting to me though, I like the idea of writing SEO articles, and getting paid to? Do you mean writing articles ABOUT SEO, or helping rewrite other peoples articles in order to help them achieve higher SEO? I don't know how to code anything though, is that hard to learn? Could I teach myself and how long would it take?

I'm open to suggestions, what would you recommend for someone like me? I'm basically starting from nothing, except a familiarity with the internet. Elance and odesk the way to go then?

Youre welcome!

First I would check what your talents and skills are. And you DO have some skills. Youre a native English speaker and you can write, thats a starting point.
SEO articles are just articles that include certain keywords, usually the client will give you the keywords. There is no special skill required you just need to write them so that they include they keywords and dont sound artifical at the same time. The recent google updates are actually in your favour here because now google wants great content and not just arrticles with 1000s of keywords stuffed in it. So more and more clients are looking for people to write content for them.

Im not a coder and have no experience with coding but there are some online courses like codeacademy and udemy (google them). Some of them might be free some might cost a little bit.
So depending on your financial situation here is what I would do right now:

I would setup profiles RIGHT NOW at elance and odesk and start bidding on every project that you can do RIGHT NOW. Just simple projects even if they are not that well paid.
You will build up a good profile this way and attract better clients.

In the meantime if you are interested in coding then I would do some research on the niche. What are the best languages to learn and how much can a programmer make?
Then if you got some money I would buy all the books on the subject, learn as much as I can, maybe take an online course in programming.

Next step, just the same like with writing. Hit the freelance boards and start bidding for projects. Take on anything that you can get, build up a good profile with good reviews and work your way up.

You alway want to be learning and improving yourself, read all the books on your niche and over time become a specialist in a certain field. For example a writer might over time become a copywriter or a business writer. A coder might specialize in a certain kind of software. These are the people who make the big bucks in the long run.

I hope this doesnt seem overwhelming because its really just about taking small steps and keeping your eye on the ball. Here check out this article about a guy who started with 10 dollar an hour on odesk and now he makes 150 dollars an hour:

Yes. It's from ads, affiliate commissions, and some ebook sales. Some of my ads are pay per click, while others are direct monthly sponsorships.

Well I made $50 - $100 per month for the first few months. Then it gradually grew from there. It took a long time before the income became significant though.
