Women have a lot going on inside their minds. They have values, feelings, emotions. A part of a woman wants a man if he meets up to her standards of providing her security or lights her fires for whatever reason. There is also the moral values part of a woman. That stuff is going on inside her head, too.
Some men make the mistake of believing what comes out of a woman's mouth. Guys on divorce forums say, "My wife said she didn't love me." That was how she felt at the moment. She may have lost all passion for him, or she might have been having mega-PMS and the hamster may have gone wild.
Sometimes it helps to tell women what to think, to draw out the part of their mind that is the most beneficial.
This 'law' the article speaks of is not all that is going on in a woman's mind. Some women are ruled by these tendencies. For other women, these things can be a bit of a temptation, but their decisions are influenced more by values, faith, shame at diverging from cultural values, guilt about doing what is wrong, etc.
If women only stayed with men because of what the men would give them in the future, then there would not be any women who stick around with deadbeat husbands who beat them and gamble away the milk money. But such women exist. Maybe they aren't the majority in the west, but there are women like that. And the gambler may be a bit of an 'alpha' in other ways that attracts her to him, but not a good potential provider for the future.
There are women who divorce to marry up, but there are plenty who don't. There are plenty of women who stay with their poor husbands. And overseas, there are cultures where women will put up with all kinds of junk American women won't put up with. Of course, there are American women who won't 'put up with a man' not fulfilling their Disney love fantasy, too.
