teaching english overseas

alright here is the deal i got a qualified English certificate to teach virtually anywhere
in the world. but the only problem is getting a work permit/visa
i hear its a nightmare to get without a college degree which i don't have right now
i don't mind going to college for 4 years but.. thats a little too long for my liking
im really tired of living in the US everything here is always about being number 1
and being better then the next guy im sick of it.
anyone have any ideas on how to get a work permit without a degree?

You don't need a degree. Apply for jobs, fill in your resume like this:

Education
Bachelor of English Program
Such and such University

Note that you do not state you have a degree. If the school has political pull you will get a visa anyhow. If they need a copy of your degree beforehand you move to another school. Recruiters are most flexible, China, Vietnam, Russia, Mexico and all of Latin America will hire w/o a 4 yr. If your cert is a CELTA then you are qualified. Save $3,000 and go!

Go on a Tourist Visa and take a degree online (if you want to)

You don't need a degree to teach in: Peru, Mexico, Korea(2 yr college diploma now), Chile, Ecuador, Argentina, Myanmar, Jakarta, India, Costa Rica, Fillipines, Poland.

Those are the ones I'm sure of.... I don't know about the rest of the countries, you'd have to do some research. Otherwise do like Globetrotter says or just go and hang out on a tourist visa and apply to schools while there. I think like 60% of teachers out there teach on fake degrees and diplomas.

Also make sure you have a kickass resume... if you'd like to see mine I can send it to you if you email me your address. I've gotten a few rejection letters but they always start with: WOW, I have never seen anything like this before, we will keep you on file.

I wanted to shed a little clarity on this topic since I've researched esl as a job/career. It seems that most university positions outside of china require a ma.Their was a gal who is frequent poster on Daves esl cafe who posted on one of the forums that 3 out 4 university jobs that she had in latin america required a ma. A Celta and tutoring will get you well on a way...but a plush 4-6k university gig in the middle east such as what Ladislav has requires a ma. I'm looking at the online one that the univ of missouri offers (only 10k.)

or you could go there first, get setup and look for a job... depends on what you want to do. If you get hired from home, you can't really shop around as far as jobs are concerned because you'll most likely be living in an apartment rented by the school...

Fuzz and I differ here. I think that for a firstimer that you should get hired from home, move there, then look for more/newer work. Get the visa, living quarters and utilities set up by your school and use that to make the transition easier. Settle in for 4 months then go look for the next bigger better job.

Fuzz thinks save $5k and then move there and get work once you are in the target country.

It depends on your tolerance for risk.

No I actually agree with you Globetrotter... let the school pay for you the first time... after you have a bit of experience snagging your own students then you'll know how and where to setup without a school.

im broke as joke man i have no motivation here anymore no desire to work just to live
not having success with woman here is just killing me i just don't understand if its me
or the culture i live in it keeps haunting me i can't escape that question i seriously would like
to know the truth. don't matter though my energy is drained but i think i have enough left
in the tank to give it a shot hop on a plane with little money i have and see the truth
see if all this time i have just lived in the wrong place.

It would be a good idea to have at least $3000 saved... work a second job at McDonalds or pick up beer bottles if you have to... Having a backup plan is ALWAYS important. I guess... unless you have a degree... then you're free and clear.

i could maybe get 1000-2000 and a little money from my parents actually
they would probably give me alot BUT i want to this on my own i don't my parents
help nor did i ever need it i'll go with less a 1000 to my name and take the risk
its the risk to have a fulfilled and rich life im not talking money im saying
friendships, relationships, adventure support love, warmth encouragement
im always one for adventure not sitting in a house watching tv like most of
the fat slobs in america SO does the schools take care of your visa plane ticket
and living space i would like to know about the VISA and a work permit
