You guys, please dont post anything negative about the thai monarchy. Otherwise it could get me or you arrested next time we go to thailand. They are very strict about that law there. See here. It even says that website owners could be prosecuted if they dont remove offensive comments on their site regarding thai royalty.

But Mr S, you dont understand. Even if the thai government cant trace your identity, they can still hold me liable and prosecute me if i go to thailand. My name is publicly known. See the article below from BBC. So you could get me jailed for it. Do you understand?

Meh...I understand the whole conflict and dilemma but I'm looking at it through a matter of principle. You can do whatever, it's your forum. I just think when people kowtow to these kinds of things it just gives the perpetrators more power over individuals and personal liberty.

Not like in Britain and America. Where the Masons are, Kings get usurped and murdered. The country begins to die a slow death. When the end looms the traitors try to put a puppet in the seat to take the blame for the traitors crimes.Winston wrote:You guys, please dont post anything negative about the thai monarchy. I don't really think this is Winston's choice or personal feelings. It looks like Winston really is liable, and why should he spend his time looking for such comments and take the risk for leaving them up a few days too long.Failing to take down offending messages from a website
In May 2012, Chiranuch Premchaiporn, editor of the news website Prachathai, was given an eight-month suspended sentence for failing to remove comments from the site quickly enough.
She had removed some after 10 days, but others had stayed up for 20.
I can't imagine Thai prison would be very pleasant.
Re: I'm in Pattaya Now...Feels good around White Culture
I personally know 2 people who are currently serving sentences in Thai prisons - one is Thai and the other a foreigner. The sentences were extremely harsh relative to the offense IMO. You could say draconian. And neither one of them thought they were at much risk before they were suddenly struck by very bad luck.
Thailand has the highest incarceration rate in Asia and is in top 5 of the world. USA tops the list but is only around 30% higher than Thailand. And the country by far has more western foreigner inmates than any other Asian country.
Call me paranoid. That's fine. But Winston, I strongly recommend you delete Mr. S' posts with those links.

This is correct. Delete these links and related comments. This sensitive stuff of Thailand is for political forums, it does not fit to Happier Abroad.Winston wrote:You guys, please dont post anything negative about the thai monarchy. I am visiting Thailand since 1972, with my family and with friends and for foreigners, indeed there are very little problems and restrictions - if you use some common sense.
If you are a foreigner and visiting Thailand:
1 -
Do not mention anything about the high society people of the political/religious system of Thailand, just don't care.
Remain silent. Anyway not your business.
Do not talk political BS while in Thailand with locals or other foreigners, do not leave any skeptical political comment on the internet or otherwise in written form etc.
2 -
If you see some political demonstrations coming from right walking to left while in Thailand, then you should walk from left to right, just disappear and never participate in such political demonstrations. You are a foreigner, just go away.
3 -
Be careful and respectful when entering religious sites, don't visit them if you are drunk and don't even have a shirt
4 -
Stay away from sex with minors
5 -
Stay away from drugs
I can assure you out of many millions of foreigners visiting Thailand every year and out of those many foreigners living in Thailand for retirement or with Thai family, only a very few ones find themselves in big troubles, as they do not want to listen and do not understand that Thailand is not USA or Europe.
The political/religious system in Thailand will never disturb you - just enjoy your vacation.
If you cannot accept these rules, better do not enter Thailand, go to somewhere else.
However in Asia you will find that many Asian countries have certain restrictions, it's not only about Thailand - be careful.
Re: I'm in Pattaya Now...Feels good around White Culture
When you enter the Philippines via NAIA, it is posted clearly in English at least in some of the Passport Control areas that foreigners found attending or participating in any kind of political demonstrations or rallies may be subject to deportation and banning from re-entry.

It is true, the prison population in Thailand is the highest in Asia.Rock wrote: .....I personally know 2 people who are currently serving sentences in Thai prisons

Most prisoners are in jail however for violence and drugs, only a few are serving sentences because of political comments.
Most foreigners in jail are Asians, only a few are from Western countries often again because of drugs.
On the other side I have to say, Thailand is quite safe, life is not bad there if you compare it with many other countries in Asia.
For me it's my favorite place for vacation and future retirement. I prefer Thailand to Philippines. Life here in Japan is also fine for me.
Re: I'm in Pattaya Now...Feels good around White Culture
Then why dont they deport the western liberals in Philippines who are falsely claiming that bar girls and p4p is due to human trafficking and that the girls are forced to be there. They are lying. Why arent they deported?Rock wrote:When you enter the Philippines via NAIA, it is posted clearly in English at least in some of the Passport Control areas that foreigners found attending or participating in any kind of political demonstrations or rallies may be subject to deportation and banning from re-entry.

Thailand is not that safe if you live there longer term or at least for extended periods. Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and HK are very safe. Thailand less so. I've seen too many unlucky incidents there yet I only stay for extended periods.Yohan wrote:It is true, the prison population in Thailand is the highest in Asia.Rock wrote: .....I personally know 2 people who are currently serving sentences in Thai prisons

1. I took a Taiwan girlfriend to Bangkok and one day when she took a taxi alone during the day, the driver was so aggressive with her that she got out of the car at a stoplight and ran.
2. A local girl I knew who worked at a curtain outlet in Home Pro came to my condo to consult when I was remodeling it. She was also a good friend. She took a taxi home early that evening (a modern looking SUV type) and the guy managed to get her out to some more remote area and tried to rape and rob her. Her clothes were all torn up and she had injuries but she fought hard, got out, and ran away leaving some items behind and having her phone busted. She was very shaken up after that and couldn't work for several days.
3. At Ko-samet, I saw a couple of tourists (man and woman) bringing back a motorcycle to the rental shop next to where I stayed. The guy told one of the other foreigners hanging around that the motorcycle was not good and not to rent from that shop. The owner heard that and went berserk physically attacking the guy while the guy's wife tried to restrain him and calm him down. It was very startling how one little comment set the guy into crazy fight mode. I see that sort of thing from time to time in Thailand.
4. Police these days sometimes stop random foreigners walking along Sukhumvit in Bangkok along the lower sois, search them, and if they don't have passport on them take them into the station for more questioning and sometimes harassment.
5. I've see cases where Thais gang up on one or more foreigner and beat him/them up in tourist areas like Pattaya and Banglamphoo. Sometimes, it over a small thing. I've even seen ladyboys start pushing around a Russian girl.
As for the Philippines, the pick-pocket, snatching, and even mugging risk is much higher than that in Thailand overall. There's so much more desperation here. But I've spent more time on the ground in Phils. than in Thailand yet I've seen a lot more violence transpire in the latter over the former. The areas popular with foreigners in say Metro Manila really seem to almost never have visible violence in public whereas in Thailand, you sometimes get a sense that certain people are near their boiling point. I even remember a hotel receptionist getting very angry with someone once for complaining about a booking problem. He looked like he was ready to come to the other side of the counter and bash the guy.
Filipinos in general tend to not only behave very politely and with humility, especially towards foreigners, but they also tolerate and absorb a lot of complaining and even verbal abuse. Thais tend to have a lot less patience and some seem to have very short fuses when dealing with outsiders anyway.
Overall, I consider Thailand and Phils. both to be medium danger countries but with somewhat different rules for each. In medium danger countries, risk can be managed fairly well by those in the know and who are capable of and willing to follow the implied rules. In higher danger countries, generally located in Caribbean, Latam, and Africa, successfully managing the risk is much more challenging and requires more good luck.
Re: I'm in Pattaya Now...Feels good around White Culture
rock,
Why is that in Thailand? And Philippines being medium dangerous countries. I had a Korean friend who told me that he felt that the Philippines is dangerous.
I was in Thailand way back in 2000 and would take walks late night around Sukhumvit soi and felt pretty safe but I'm Asian looking. There were more than one occasion when the local Thais thought I was local.
I have my theory . I think first it;s poverty. Even though Thailand is rising in some areas it's still overall a poor country. Second I think the welcoming mat been over extended. When I was in Thailand way back in 2000 I seen some of the expats there. They are not great..actually they were pretty bad. I think the locals know enough of what the expats think and do. So it;s like an act. They smile at you but hate you. I think that's why I didn't like being there too long. As a farang they see you as an ATM machine and it's all about money with Thais . I imagine the Philippines maybe the same.
