101 Ways to Generate Income Overseas?

Post by YoucancallmeAl »

Anyone read this yet?:
http://www.portabletradesandoccupations.com/ea.html

It sells for $99. f**k that. Anyone know if it's worth it and/or has read and can share some of it's best ideas?
Of course there's always teaching english but who really wants to do that if they can avoid it? Besides, in most countries the TEFL competition's too fierce and the pay's too low for the workload.

I've seen that advertised, as well, and my curiosity was piqued, but at $99, there is no way I'm buying it. Probably pretty basic stuff, or things like "become a baker", "become a day laborer", teach English, etc. Maybe a Google search will give you more info; I haven't tried.

As for TEFL, I've done it overseas, without the cert, and just a college degree and I was fine. The work was hefty, but I found that after a year in a place, I had found enough interested students that I left the schools and taught them one-on-one for less than they were paying the school for group class, but more than I was getting paid by the school. Since I was in Eastern Europe, they didn't have non-compete clauses back then (I don't know about now), so "stealing" the schools' students was not against the law. If I just "quit" my job, the interested students would come up to me privately and ask for private lessons, off-grounds of the school. Don't know if that would work in a small town, though.

The book appears to be on Amazon (same book?):

http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Trades-O ... ewpoints=1,

It only has 2 reviews, however, probably due to the price. I think one of them is probably from the author himself, since it's so slobberingly sycophantic. And BTW, has that book REALLY been out for 10 years? That's how old the reviews are.

Google the title of the book with the word "discount download" and then you will see several of those. It seems to have gone out of print in 1998. Think of the things that have happened since then.

Here are some words about some people who market such books:

It does not invalidate the book per se but I would rather treat it as an academic and pep book to inspire people to get off their feet and move into the international arena. The practical advice in it has to be taken with a grain of salt.
Imo, it belongs in the same category as Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Good hype and pep talk and some people do succeed. And inspirational book rather than a practical guide.
I may wish to buy it as such and there may be some good ideas in it.

Almost sounds like the same sort of "5 Flags" stuff the Sovereign Man guy is always talking about. I wonder if it's the same person...? Every heard of him? http://www.sovereignman.com". Not bad ideas, but I question anyone who coughs up money to buy into those seminars and "services".

I don't see how anyone could bring themselves to trust their money with these con men. But I am sure there are people who do. Once, they have your money out of the US, it is gone. One of the advantages of having money in the US, is that you can still find institutions that won't outright steal it from you. If you can find a way to make a decent return, you just pay the taxes as a cost of doing business.

A lot of " consulting" can be obtained for free on message boards. And it will be tailor made to your needs.

I think I may have found a link to that book online, in PDF format, for free. As Ladislav said, take it for a pep talk, but for God's sake, don't waste your money on it. The adverts at the top for "honorary PhD" is enough to tell you what sort of people those are. The work ideas seem to be worth some note, however.

Here's the link:

'A lot of " consulting" can be obtained for free on message boards.'

Our time has value. Life is not forever and we will die someday.

If you spend 10 hours then your cost is your hourly rate X 10.

Do you earn less than $9.90 an hour?...
