This could be explained by a lack of ancestry and tradition, (since technically we don't know how long the native american Indians were here - but whites brought smallpox and other viruses and killed off many of them). After reading a post on Chicago which made it sound almost like a post-apoctalyptic wasteland, I wonder if he is just reporting every day life there.
