There is a series of books called "Culture Shock + country's name", such as "Culture Shock ,Thailand", "Culture Shock, Philippines, etc". Just search on the Amazon.com
The books are amazing- they explain cultures and why and how the people act the way they act. Written by expats with decades of experience, these books are an absolute necessity before you go to the country. They will help you to avoid emotional and financial surprises and just help you along the way. After 20 years of dealing with the Philippines, I finally got off my high horse and bought me a copy. My God, I should have read it 20 years ago and learned all the things I know now but after having made huge mistakes and years of trial and error.
Please guys wherever you go, absolutely buy one of these books and read them thoroughly.
