My friend's negative trip report from Angeles City

Post by Winston »

Check out my friend's negative trip report from Angeles City. WTF went wrong? I have no idea what he's talking about in regard to the customs problem. It doesn't fit anything that I know. Anyone have any idea?
J.R., Winston,

Greetings from Angeles Shitty. I apologize for writing you in tandem but am doing so in order to fill you in on my experiences so far and to get suggestions, contact numbers, etc.

J.R., you mentioned that Ladislav was currently staying in Angeles--Do you (or Winston) have his phone number and can you give it to me?

I have another American friend here who lives in Pattaya and who is here to escape Songkran--the Thai water festival held every April which is particularly annoying in Pattaya. Anyway, he is not much help because he has been coming to Angeles for years and no longer does the bar scene. He has many female friends he will hook up with but he declined my request to fix me up with any of their friends.

My initial impression of Angeles is not good and I do not like it here much at all.

My first night was a real disaster which started at customs at Clark. I did not know this at the time but apparently the Philippines has a law that one cannot bring over 10,000 Pesos into the country. The customs declaration form had a box to check where you had to declare how much money you were bringing in. I debated whether or not to lie about this but due to my extremely bad luck with customs in various lands I decided to tell the truth. In retrospect, knowing what I know now, telling the truth was a huge mistake.

The result was that I was detained by the rather sleazy customs agent and shown a copy of this rather asinine law (since it stands to reason, within limits, that the more money a person brings into the country, the more he is likely to spend, thus helping boost the country's economy),

However, if I have learned one thing after 3 days here it is that it appears the Philippines is operated on a convoluted system that seems hell-bent on finding the most inefficient and impractical ways of operating.

Anyway, after bantering back and forth with the customs agent for over an hour (and missing my hotel ride from the airport as a result), it became clear to me that the customs officer wanted a bribe to let me in the country. I suggested a "gift" of 2000 Pesos, which he accepted, and was then allowed in the country and had to take a rip off taxi to my hotel.

I was and am not impressed at all by the Swiss Chalet and my first room was infested with many gigantic roaches. I HATE cockroaches and after killing five or six of the buggers I complained that first night to hotel staff and demanded to be switched to a new room and advised them I would seek a new hotel the next day if my request was denied. They agreed to move me to a new room that night and so far I have had no more roach problems. That said, the hotel is tacky and the decor reminds me of a cheap Mexican hotel. I am likewise paying a rate that would get me a much nicer (and cleaner) hotel in Thailand. If I do return to Angeles, I will not stay here again. Other than being "close to the action," the hotel has no merits whatsoever.

But wait, as the TV commercials say, it gets worse and here I admit I am to blame for what happened next to cap off my first night of horror here in Angeles.

I had info on the bars on my phone but was so flustered by my customs experience that I could not locate my voltage converter plug-ins and did not have any phone battery power. I was on my own.

I foolishly stumbled into a high-dollar bar called Crystal Palace? near the hotel and ordered a water. I was very frustrated and horny and was deluged by my customs experience and by being in a new country. The end result of this was my bar-fining a 3000 Peso "gold" dancer (whatever the f**k that means) and taking her back to the hotel. Had I been in a better state of mind I would not have had the very negative experience that followed.

This girl was to be my first Pinay f**k and she was a solid "8" stunner--so I was very excited. Curiously, while she was all over me at the bar, she became very reserved in the room--taking off only her top. I began sucking her breasts and kissing her and got almost no response. The f***ing girl wanted to talk and most of her talk centered on the fact that many of her customers wanted "boom-boom" up to three times in a night--but, she said, she was only a one time a night girl. I did not take this as a good sign and this boom-boom talk soon changed into her real agenda; which was that supposedly her menstrual cycle had started that day and she was happy I understood. Obviously I had made a HUGE mistake by not asking this question in the bar--though judging by the looks of the girl she did not appear to be on her period at all (she had no bloating or other obvious signs) and while I did not bother to check I was so pissed at my stupidity and the girls' deception that I spent the next hour giving her a stern morality lecture (normally I would have kicked such a girl out ASAP). Of course by the time I finished my lecture it was 3:00 AM and I was exhausted and the girl gave what is no doubt a ready-made excuse that she had to leave to help close the bar. I gladly let her go.

However, this initial f**k up and disappointment has stayed with me and has tarnished both my attitude and my trip. I have gone to very few bars since and have refused to buy drinks for ANY women in any bar. After I refuse to buy a drink I am usually ostracized which only makes me more bitter.

My only salvation, thus far, has been blow row, where I have had a couple of satisfying 3-somes.

I am much more of a beer bar guy by nature and inclination and Angeles is definitely not a beer bar city. I have not been able to sample the bars on perimeter road because it is barricaded due to some sort of Holy Week bullshit.

My time in Thailand was much more enjoyable though I took a girl long-time there and did not f**k all that many women. To Winston, I do not have any pictures. I am not much of a picture-taking person and did not even bring a camera on this trip other than my cell phone.

Winston--you are right about Angeles--it is not a very healthy city and is full of fat slob men who line the bar counters spewing bullshit and stuffing their faces with shit food and copious amounts of alcohol. I was walking up to 8KM a day on the beaches of Thailand but here I am forced to walk on Fields Ave. amidst the very persistent hawkers of Viagra, cigarettes, etc. I am sure my rather sour attitude toward the place is not helping but on the plus side I have found one vegetarian restaurant with semi-decent food and am trying to maintain an exercise regimen despite the pollution, noise and constant nuisance of the street vendors.

Any suggestions you guys have regarding women here would be much appreciated. I have already made many observations and when I get home, Winston, I will write a screed comparing Thailand to Phils that you may want to publish on happier abroad. I hesitate to judge a country based on limited travel there so I may hold off until I have spent more time here and maybe will have had better experiences and had a Pinay GF or two. Thailand also has its share of bullshit but so far I find it a much easier country to deal with.

I'm off to 7-11. I hope to hear from one or both of you with some suggestions and hope all goes well for both of you.
My response to him:

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I was in Taichung for a few days.

I don't understand what happened to you. It doesn't make any sense. There is no law that says you can't bring in 10,000p into the country. The customs form says that you need to declare your cash only if you have $10,000 USD on you in cash. But who carries that much in cash on them? Where does it say 10,000p? That's only $250 USD. Lots of guys carry over $250 on them. None of them report it to customs. So what you told me doesn't make sense and doesn't fit what I know. Did you misread something?

Why would you need to declare 10,000p ($250) in cash? What for? If they want you to spend money, then why would they give you a hard time about it? You did not need to bribe anyone. They will not hold you there forever. They will let you go after you look away and get annoyed. By giving them 2000p in bribes, you set a bad example because now the customs guy will think that every white foreigner will be willing to pay 2000p in bribes for no reason. That could reflect badly on others. You should have held your ground and given them hell. These are not civilized intelligent beings. They are dogs, so treat them as such. Humor them with small treats, not big ones.

If you do have to give a bribe though, you start at 100p and go up in 50p increments. You don't start at 2000p. That doesn't make sense. I don't understand why white guys make illogical moves like that. Even traffic cops will accept 200p as a bribe. When I left the PI, they caught me carrying pirated DVD's in my luggage. I was going to offer them a bribe, but the guys just let me go and told me not to bring them through customs again next time. They didn't want my bribe even though I offered it to them.

Also, I've stayed in Swiss Chalet many times and never saw a cockroach there. It is pretty clean and European style. I don't know how you got a bad room. Go down the street and try staying at Orchid Inn. For the same price of 1600p, you get a nice clean room with a nice pool area.

When you barfine a girl, you are supposed to discuss in advance how long she will stay with you, and make sure the mamasan knows about it too. Some girls will leave early and break their promise though. But you don't need to pay those 3000p barfines. There are plenty for 1500p.

Here is Ladislav's number: ********

I'll forward you his email too, so he can contact you. Hope you avoid such mistakes in the future.

Regards,
Winston

I have never heard of that either. I have been to the PI 3 times now and have never been harassed by customs. It sounds to me like you also had high expectations for AC.. If you want first rate hotel / women, AC is not the best place to look. There are much better places but you better have your wallet ready to fork over some $$. AC is going to be a dirty run down place just due to being a former military hot spot that lost it's number one clientele. If you expect the niceties of a tourist area, you need to be visiting Manilla, Cebu, Palawan...ect..ect.. You can't expect to go to a run down sex tourist area and find pristine hotels and people that are not going to try to rip you off. You have to go into a place like that expecting it.

Winston, You do not understand? Here, let me explain it to you so that even YOU can comprehend.

1) He was new to the RP and it showed
2) The local touts, thugs and con artists saw this and immediately began to take advantage of him.
3) The currency law WAS A f***ing LIE CREATED BY THE CUSTOMS OFFICER TO GET A BRIBE. Jesus f***ing Christ how oblivious, clueless and stupid are you , Winston?
4) The taxi driver sensed this newbie and ripped him off.
5) The clerks at the hotel did the same until he complained.
6) The girl at CP did the same. She lied, everything. She wasn't on the rag, she did not need to clean up. When a girl does this tell her to shut up and f**k her 6 times.

Winston there is something seriously lacking in your social skill set if you constantly make all of these 'enlightened observations' and fill this site with them, if you have lived in AC for months or years, if you have traveled to Thailand and Taiwan and Russia; yet you still cannot figure out what is going on in the situation in the OP.

You must be selectively blind or stupid to certain things, because when I set foot in the RP it took my 15 minutes to figure it all out, and none of it was good.

viewtopic.php?t=12559

What a f***ing surprise - my thread on the RP was completely accurate. Even the prices and the bullshit and the rip-off culture that is everywhere.

Why would he do this? Maybe he doesn't want to get tossed into an RP jail for a few hours or days while everything he owns is stolen. Maybe he does not know how to approach bribes because his L1 culture does not have them.

Maybe you could have told him this BEFORE HE ARRIVED INSTEAD OF AFTER.
Check out my friend's negative trip report from Angeles City. WTF went wrong?
Maybe you should have emailed this 'friend' earlier, before he arrived, and gave him some hints, but clearly you didn't and this is - again - what I mentioned in my thread about the RP.

You guys won't help, you won't share info until AFTER THE FACT, but somehow it's all the fault of first-timers for not reading your minds.

I told you what happened to me, others have concurred, you simply ignored our criticisms and you let a 'friend' go to the RP without helping him out by sending him some concise tips before he arrived. But you give him the information NOW, AFTER IT WON'T BE OF ANY USE TO HIM?!!!
Hope you avoid such mistakes in the future.
This is f***ing useless, and you could have helped him avoid the mistakes before they happened.

That is what A FRIEND WOULD DO.

Where did you get that info? Why would a first timer to the PH have any pesos on him? That doesn't make sense. What's the logic behind that law? Zero. I've never heard of that law. Strange.

Globetrotter, f**k you, you idiot asshole. At least I don't hide behind a second screen name when I return to the forum. I have no need to be deceptive, unlike you. You are the idiot. I am open and honest. Social skills has nothing to do with this. I'm just using basic logic. Social skills is about getting along with others and staying on their good side. (like Oprah Winfrey does) It has nothing to do with people trying to scam you.

FYI, I know lots of guys who went to the PH for the first time, and this has never happened to them. FYI, you get the customs form to fill out on the plane. The flight attendant hands them to you. They do NOT say that you have to declare 10,000p, only 10,000 USD.

Also, how would he have 10,000p if he came from abroad? That scam doesn't make sense. There is no basis for a bribe. You can call a manager at the airport and get the customs officer in trouble. How come other guys don't have this happen?

The taxi driver fee at Clark is unavoidable. If you fly into Clark, the taxis will only accept 400p, no less. There's no way around it. Lots of guys have tried bargaining with them. You can go there and try it yourself.

Maybe my friend was just very unlucky or attracted bad people? I don't know. But other guys I know didn't run into this. Maybe you were unlucky too. I never got scammed when I first arrived in the PH. So how could I have anticipated any of this? You are not making sense.

Even though you don't fancy me in any way (LOL j/k), you beat me to the punch about that newbie guy to the Philippines. And he sounded so amateurish that he was literally wet behind the ears. LIve and learn...only an unmitigated fool makes the exact same mistake twice. Hell, I can attest to being an unmitigated fool, but not in a mongering sense though. *pats himself on his back*

It's important for the forum members that have done some travelling to give tips to those who haven't. Here's a tip. Regardless of where you travel, people will always ask you the same question. They are trying to measure you up....trying to determine if they can take you for a few extra bucks.

It's always the same question. "Is this your first time to ___________________."

Here's how I reply. "Man, I probably spend more time here than you do." They laugh and the scams usually stop. They just move on to the next newbie.

I don't care where you go in the world (including here in the ol' USA) if you come across as a guy who's never been there or never been anywhere, you will attract scammers. Hell, go to NYC and tell a cabbie there it's your first time in New York and see what happens.

Other tips:
1. Do your research before you get on the plane. While the Internet makes this easier, many sources are crap. Find one(s) you trust and ask questions. Better to come across as an idiot before you travel then after you arrive. Had the original OP and ph_visitor done more of this, they may have been less disappointed by their experience on the ground.
2. A little paranoia is a good thing. Dont bring in too much cash and divide your money up into several locations. Same thing with your more expensive possessions. And if you don't need to bring it - don't.
3. Act like you own the place. Confidence makes you less of a target and BTW, makes you more attractive to girls.
4. Assume you will make a mistake. Yep, you may get taken by an overpriced cab ride but let it roll off your back. Your travel adventures should be the experiences of a lifetime, not a time to beat yourself up. As an adjunct to this; assume shit will happen. Your flight will get cancelled, it'll get routed to another city, you'll get stuck because of a volcano (all of the above have happened to me). It's your choice as to whether your gonna get pissed off, bummed out, or still have a great time.
5. If you can't afford to lose it don't take it. This is the old gambling adage; don't gamble what you can't afford to lose, but can be also applied to travel. I see guys on this forum say they have 1k to their name and they're gonna take it on their trip. That puts a lot of pressure on you not to screw up.
6. If a screw up occurs, be a man and accept responsbility. It isn't an entire country that consprired against you, it isn't the fault of an anonymous guy on the Internet - it's your fault. Grow up and take responsbility!

My GOD, you are a f***ing idiot.

Q: Why would a first timer to the PH have any pesos on him?
1) To pay the port exit fee if it wasn't on his ticket.
2) To pay the taxi driver to take him to his hotel.
3) To lower the risk of being robbed, mugged or ID-theft at the ATM, which does not exist at the exit of the MNL airport before you get to the taxi line.
4) To pay his hotel, food, bus ticket and other expenses without having to brave going to an ATM with his luggage nearby, making him a rip-off target to everyone.

Q: What's the logic behind that law?

You really are clueless after having lived in Asia for years, aren't you?
All countries have currency border controls. Including the USA.
How can you POSSIBLY live in the RP, or Asia, for so long and be this ignorant?

Winston, I am quite certain that your inability to date in the USA has more than a little to do with your selective idiocy that is displayed in replies, such as this thread. You are socially inept and blind to what many other people see, and you do not know this.

You go on and on about yourself and your 'enlightened opinions, we are all light, your 'intelligent observations' etc.', you live in Asia for YEARS, yet you are intellectually blind to obvious things that newcomers to (for example) the RP, a nation you have lived in for years, things that newbies spot in minutes or seconds.

How is it possible that you are so blind and I and the OP and others are not?

This is a legitimate question.

You pose as an authority, and you live in Asia, but your knowledge is totally ignorant of basic things that anyone who travels would and should know. Your inability to 'see' what the OP and I 'see' indicates some sort of selective stupidity, blindness, or mental block to some very obvious facts about reality.

This would clearly explain your inability to date in the USA and your social needs being met only by whores in Asia.

In short, you are a clueless nimrod who does not understand what is going on around him and no girl wants to date a clueless nimrod. A nimrod is a person regarded as silly, foolish, or stupid. An unintelligent person, an "idiot".

This explains a great deal.

"He sounded so amateurish that he was literally wet behind the ears. LIve and learn..."

So no one offers to help him BEFORE?
Clue him in? Show him how to avoid the mistakes?
Why is this?
Winston claims he is 'a friend' but does not help him and throws him to the sharks? That is not what a friend does.

WTF is wrong with you guys?

You can help, but won't?

This has happened to several people on HA, including me.

This is a good indicator of some level of sociopathy on your part, and it is NOT good.

I live in RURAL CHINA, backwater, backwards, culture shock central and I had trouble navigating the RP. This means that most will, and the manly thing to do is to help out.

You guys are a group of sociopathic assholes. My assessment from February remains intact.

By most accounts, and I have yet to visit Thailand, Thailand is like Orange County compared to the Philippines.
